If you want to get technical, infusing ink into your skin via needle is mutilating one's skin. However, I do not believe that makes it unqualified to be considered art. If you think about it, every work of art requires some form of mutilation. A piece of paper is mutilated by pencil or pen. Individual colors of oil paints are mutilated with other colors. Clay or stone is mutilated by chisels and picks. Words are mutilated by an author when he or she applies personal meaning to their structure and purpose. I think there's a negative connotation to the word "mutilate", but there doesn't need to be. "To mutilate" can also mean "to create".

This is definitely an interesting take and one that I can accept. I was not prepared for this response but none-the-less I am in agreement with you. Thank you

I suppose that is subject to each one's opinion but I have to say, I think the whole thing has run its course and I look forward to the day when we start moving in a different direction.

Whether it is art or mutilation, it just isn't very flattering on 99% of the people I see with "body art."

One's tattoos can be an expression of true art. But, there is a limit. I mean enough is is enough. Total body tattoos are too much.

Trying to be objective......Tattoos are a mix of both, depending on your subjective tastes. Some tattoos are striking, others boring, still others might be thought of as artistic creations. Personally I think they're a waste of good ink.

Historically it seems humans have always painted, mutilated and worked on the flesh - for religious and cultural events and festivals and what have you, but we've now taken it into the realms of what you might call sheep fashion. Nearly everyone has a damn tattoo simply because they saw someone else with a damn tattoo!!

People go completely overboard with every fad and trend until we wear it out and then we hate and do something else . . . as so it goes.
