Fashion means to wear such things which attract eyes of others... And in which person feels comfortable too.

To me, it means feeling good in what you're wearing. Not so much about wearing what everyone else is.

I think people here are conflating 'fashion' with 'style', the former is conformity to the latest trend and the latter is an individualistic taste and expression.

Fashion, according to me, is an extension of your personality that you portray through your appearance. Fashion does not always have to be about the latest trends, however, a little knowledge about it always helps. Fashion is a way we can define ourselves and personality through our clothes, accessories, makeup, etc.

agree with rikabothra. Fashion is what speak for you and part of you. Broadly speaking, it is also a reflection of social ideology. what people like or dislike are shown in fashion.

i agree with dabneylewis.. fashion is creating a style in which you are comfortable and defines who you are.

Unfortunatly it means to have people tell you that you dress like a hooker and you have to conform to their idea of appealing. At least all the stupid shows my wife watches have taught me that.

Shows like what not to wear and others are a cancer in our culture. I think as long as you are dressing in what you feel comfurtable in and your a** isn't hanging out because your pants are around your legs or your skirt is just below your cheeks, your dressing just fine.

In my opinion to be dressed fashionably simply means catching the trend without looking ridiculous or boring.

Hi Anupma - I think fashion is confidence, ultimately. For me it's a combination of finding what works for my body type (which is where the fashion "rules" come in handy), paying attention to trends, and then filtering those styles through my personality so my own mark is on my looks.

fashion to me is the norm or standard of how we all dress

    style is making it personal

You're right, vintageglamour.  Fashion has more to do with the current style or custom of dressing.  Personal style may have nothing to do with fashion.

The above link has been moved.

"It could arguably be said that fashion began at some time during the Middle Ages, about six hundred years ago. During the rule of the vast Roman Empire, which encompassed most of what are now Europe, Britain, northern Africa, and the near Middle East including Spain, Turkey, and Greece, most clothing consisted of togas, tunics, shawls, and veils. Status was denoted by the color of the stripe on one’s toga and the toga’s length. After the decline of Rome and because of its geographical location, the area was sacked many times by feudal lords, Germanic, French, Moor, and Muslim. The Dark Ages ensued and the separation of the classes grew deeper. Due to the constant change of power, by the 1400s, the entire social structure of Europe had been transformed and changes in clothing styles moved at a high speed. This phenomenon is believed to be the beginning of what we call fashion, “a pattern of change which takes place in styles and characteristics of dress found in open ended societies” (Tortora pg.102).

remember when we thought by the year 2000 we would all be dressing like Star Trek characters in those tight jumpsuits?  remember when the length of your skirt could get you put into detention and your mom would have to come get you and you would get grounded because you rolled up the waist band of your pleated wool skirt?  Fashion!  Remember when we wore white lipstick and we thought we were way cccooooool?  Remember Twiggy?   Hey, without fashion a lot of us would have nothing to do but get into even worse trouble.  I love that what we wear can get us in trouble.  I think that says so much about how much people want to control each other.  Its so tribal!  not just colors, but the way you wear your hat can signal to other gangs that you're in their territory!  Fashion is way more than just pretty stuff we wear to attract each other.  Think of men's ties!

Oh wow!  I could go on and on.  oh yeah, I just did!  big_smile

absolutely!  clothing and hair and tattoos and all that - shoes, for pete's sake!

those are sometimes the only way we have of telling the world to go ---- itself!

But then, someone else copies what we did, and then its a trend and so not hip, you know?  Now I dress like a dumpy old grump, and THAT gets me in trouble!
