Plastic Surgery Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck Information
Plastic Surgery Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck Information
Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to remove localized fat in the lower abdomen and serves to remove and reduce sagging skin and stretch marks in the umbilical region located between the navel and pubic hair. This plastic surgery can not eliminate the striations of the lateral region or the region above the navel.
Abdominoplasty is a treatment for sagging and should not be viewed as a choice between this procedure and liposuction. In cases of pure liposuction, no sagging skin, but only excess fat located in a region with good texture and skin elasticity.
This plastic surgery can be subdivided into mini abdominoplasty and classic dermolipectomy. In the first, this is only in the lower portion of the navel, with no need to reposition it. In the classical abdominoplasty, we work around the abdomen with concomitant treatment of the umbilicus.
Plastic surgery of the abdomen should not be considered as a treatment for weight loss, although in cases of obese patients lose weight because the amount of tissue removed is large. Too obese people get poor results with surgery. In these cases, surgical indication may be made only for functional reasons and hygienic.
We believe that what is important in these surgeries is not what is removed, but the maintenance of body proportions and harmony as a whole after these resections. Being a surgery that removes a certain amount of skin and fat, there will be a reduction in body weight, which varies with the volume of the abdomen of each patient.
Despite that the pounds are not taken to define the aesthetic results of plastic surgery, but the proportions that the abdomen remains with the rest of the trunk and limbs. Paradoxically, the abdomens with the best aesthetic results are precisely those who retire in less amount of fat and skin. Plastic surgery also corrects some degree of muscle flaccidity of the abdominal wall that can keep the excess tissue. Thus, we can reposition the rectus muscles of the abdomen that were removed after a pregnancy, abdominal distention prolonged or even incompetence muscle.
But also it is a contouring plastic surgery, abdominoplasty is often combined with liposuction of the flanks, or the lateral portion of the abdomen, back, or other areas of need for harmony in this part of the body.
Abdominoplasty is performed under epidural anesthesia with sedation, and may be generally at the discretion of the anesthesia team. Abdominoplasty lasts around three to four hours. Remember, the total time in the operating room is higher than the actual time of surgery, because the preparation and postoperative recovery are contributing to this increase. The patient should remain hospitalized in plastic surgery clinic or hospital for one or two days.
It must be remembered that any plastic surgery procedure isn't without risk. Plastic surgeries are generally predictable and manageable. The aesthetic surgery should be performed in healthy patients who received a thorough clinical assessment and cardiology.
Tummy Tuck Scars
The scars of abdominoplasty can be of varying sizes according to the quantity and location of the excess tissue that has to be removed. They are characterized by an arched line, being low in the pubic area and rising toward the side. With this format abdominoplasty is planned to be hidden under costumes or intimate swimwear. In certain situations where there is sufficient elasticity of the tissue to reach the pubic region, there is the need to complement the arcuate scar with a small vertical stroke, leaving the final appearance of an inverted T.
In these cases, each situation is individual and don't dependent on the surgeon, but in the anatomical conditions of each abdomen. The positioning of the smaller necessary scars is done with a view to a good cosmetic result. With the need to reposition the navel, a small scar is placed around the same, but in order to hide it in the umbilical depression as much as possible. This is usually not necessary in the mini-abdominoplasty.
Until the thirtieth day after plastic surgery, the cutting from abdominoplasty has a good appearance. The end of the first month and after the end of the second month, there may be a natural extension of scar with change in tone and can go from red to brown, then begin to lighten. This is the period of greatest concern to patients, however, is temporary and it varies from person to person.
Thereafter, the abdominoplasty incision tends to become ever clearer, thinner, reaching its final appearance. Therefore, any definitive assessment of a surgery of this kind should be made after a period of 18 months. When in doubt, patients should talk to their plastic surgeon.
In some cases scars of abdominoplasty can be enlarged, or may become thick, high and hard, forming keloids. These events are related to the quality of the skin or the patient's genetics and not the way the plastic surgery was done. If it occurs the plastic surgeon should give guidance and proper treatment indicating an operation for timely refinishing. The infra-umbilical pre-existing scars (caesarean or appendix) are in most cases, resected during surgery. Those located above the navel, as well as striations in this location will remain and will be displaced downward.
Peculiarities of Abdominoplasty
In some situations where patients have a very thick supra-umbilical or so-called stomach with high fat deposition. In this situation there may be a need for more plastic surgery to get a good result, since it is not always advisable to treat the region with detachment of tissues and concomitant liposuction. It is through the upper abdomen that the tissues below are nourished, and an additional trauma of liposuction in this region may have some drawbacks.
In these cases, it is recommended a tummy tuck first and liposuction after six months to a year. In severe obesity that gone through massive weight loss or underwent plastic surgery for weight loss, may have to individualize the plans drawn with changes in surgical scar.
When should i do a Tummy Tuck?
When there is proven abdominal tenderness, may indicate that plastic surgery. In women who have not yet had children, it is recommended to think hard before deciding on surgery. It is advisable that the patient talk with their family and their doctor. The surgery does not prevent the patient becomes pregnant, but if the pregnancy occurs after abdominoplasty, the cosmetic results are compromised and need a new plastic surgery. Also after a pregnancy, it is recommended that the tissues are expected to settle before making an abdomen plastic surgery.
Abdominopastia and Tobacco
Before making the abdominoplasty is needed to stop smoking at least 30 days before the operation. Smoking and tobacco affect the cutaneous circulation and impede the healing process, even leading to skin necrosis. In cases of need is associated with vitamin C and vasodilators before surgery. This will be guided by the surgeon.
Orientations of Postoperative Abdominoplasty
Usually this plastic surgery does not present a postoperative pain. Yet it has some degree of increased pain sensitivity, the use of common painkillers resolves well and will be advised when prescribing postoperative. The use of medication must be recommended by your doctor or plastic surgeon, following all the guidelines given by the surgical team. It is better for the patient to clarify doubts with the plastic surgeon who operated on you, rather than ask for directions to friends who do not know in detail the case, or other medical professionals who do not practice this plastic surgery.
Often, the patient feeling well, forget that he was operated recently. Care is needed! The euphoria may lead to an inappropriate effort which could compromise the results of plastic surgery.
In this plastic surgery, the recovery period is longer. The patient initiates the partial return to its activity one week after abdominoplasty.
The patient is discharged from the hospital the day after the plastic surgery and receive all the necessary recommendations to a good recovery.
Abdominoplasty in the Long Term
The abdominoplasty with or without liposuction is not a surgery that has results for the rest of life. The results tend to change continuously over the years. Some factors like age, body weight variation, quality and texture of the skin, hormonal influences, pregnancy, interfere with the way the abdomen, regardless of whether or not operated. Yet it's hard to lose the results of this surgery. Where appropriate a new plastic surgery may be indicated when these amendments come forward, altering the shape or volume of the abdomen. The second is a plastic surgery touch-up first is a new procedure that can be indicated to treat the effects of weather and other factors on the abdomen.
