Rocker Bottom Toning Shoes Pt1 | Skechers Shape Ups for Men

Updated on February 5, 2012

Toning Shoes Work

Spring is here and time to tone up the abs and legs; yep I’m talking to you dude. Rocker bottom or toning shoes are not just for the gals. Looking good on the beach is just as, or even more important for guys than it is for the ladies. Since they (the ladies) have a much more critical eye than we do.

There are a number of good options out there for toning shoes, Skechers are a market leader in the kinetic wedge technology that goes in to making the shoes an effective weight loss and muscle toning tool. The process is enhanced when you wear them for an extended period of time as with every step you expend a little bit more energy than without them.

XT, SRT, AT Which Model?

Skechers Shape Ups for Men goes a step further (no pun intended) by making three different styles oriented towards specific wear patterns or events. The XT’s (extended wear) are oriented to just that ALL DAY WEAR. They make many specific styles that are appropriate for all manner of jobs including work boots. These are the type I own and I can tell you they are effective.

I average about 6,000 steps a day on my job which with my stride, comes out to just under three miles. I got the shoes because I was at a weight loss plateau and I wanted to use the P-90 principle of shaking things up in my workout. Since I have some significant limitations due to arthritis in what I can do I had to find an option that minimized joint stress, while increasing muscle tension. These shoes accomplished the mission during my second week of wear. I am back to losing 1-3 lbs per week and am continuing my exercise program and considering buying a pair of SRT’s.

The SRT (Resistance Trainer) have a different angle of attack in the heel and an additional insole layer that provides even more lateral stability in the heel. They are not meant for all day wear though a good aerobic workout or a long walk are appropriate. I would take it slow on the aerobic workout until you have adjusted to the shoe and developed a good stretching habit before the workout.

The AT (All Terrain) models have a different angle of attack in the wedge that is between the other two models. But it has an inner lateral stability layer that is provides the higher level of stability needed for hiking or off road events. Once again it is important to break these shoes in and stretch properly before you undertake max level events in them.

Below is a video that may prove useful it's an independent review of the shoe in general.

Independent Review

In conclusion, I can recommend Shape Ups in particular and toning shoes in general as an effective tool in weight loss and toning.  Below is a link to my epinions review for the XT Series. As for the claim of never setting foot in the gym again I would say that is doubtful if you have more than a few pounds to lose or an advanced level of fitness as your objective. They do however enhance most programs and are a very useful tool.
