Youthful Mother of the Bride Dresses

Remember the days of old, when dresses for mother of the bride were anything but stylish? They were more like . . . plain, understated, and certainly looked their age.

Not anymore because today’s bride’s mother is young-at-heart, bolder, and wear clothes that will make her grandparents gasp.

Remember the days of old, when dresses for mother of the bride were anything but stylish? They were more like . . . plain, understated, and certainly looked their age.

Not anymore because today’s bride’s mother is young-at-heart, bolder, and wear clothes that will make her grandparents gasp.

Knowing what to wear on your daughter’s wedding day can be somewhat challenging, but you are not alone. Many M-O-Bs want to look wonderful and attractively dressed; they want to look as stylish as is possible (without crossing the line), and totally chic.

So whether you are in your forties, fifties, sixties, or even seventies, you can always make a ‘bold’ fashion statement if you know the wedding theme and colours early enough to plan well ahead.

  • Discussing what to wear with your daughter is very important
  • You don’t want to cause a colour, style, or era clash
  • Your dress should complement the wedding theme
  • You want to ensure the bride loves the dress you plan to wear

Finding an amazing mother of the bride dress that’ll make any bride’s mum feel stylish and wonderful on her ‘little’ girl’s day isn't that hard once you follow these few tips. They will guide you along if you find it hard to make decisions. These tips will also be of some help to you as you plan towards this great and important day of your life.

Remember, it’s also your day of honour so your dress style should be deserving of this honour . . . Yes it’s your daughter’s day but it is also your day of pride and joy as well.

7 Tips for Mothers-of-the-Bride (Before Dress Shopping)

Before preparing to go shopping for your dress (or gown), get a notebook and jot down some answers or points:

  1. Do you desire a formal sophisticated look of a long floor-sweeping gown or something more daring and youthful like a knee-length dress?
  2. Which colour(s) and style best suits the wedding theme?
  3. If you can sketch, consider sketching out what you envision you'd look like attired
  4. If you can't sketch, go on-line, or search wedding boards on Pinterest. You’ll find tons of designs and wonderful ideas for mother of the bride attire.
  5. Visit local bridal boutiques; you can even check out the bridesmaids section (yes!) at such boutiques if you dress young-at-heart. There isn't much sense wasting time in the mother of the bride section if all they have are old-fashioned frumpy dresses.
  6. Visit wedding stores online for inspiration. Some styles you'll find in the 'Special Occasion Dresses' section of such stores are always elegant/chic/smart; you can’t but find one that will look breath-taking on you.
  7. Pay attention to your accessories! Your choice of accessories must be equally beautiful and complimentary to your MOB dress. You certainly have to plan and choose carefully. You don’t want a mismatch between your dress and your fashion accessories.

Break the Rules If You Must – Forget Dress Codes

Break that traditional rule of forgetting about taking care of you. Forget those rules of conformity. Wear whatever you feel and look fantastic in, but of course, don’t outshine the bride.

Times have truly changed and mothers-of-the-brides are getting younger with many going all out for the glitz and glamour so, turn some heads!

Youthful and stylish dresses for the mother of the bride and groom are acceptable today but remember, dress in accordance with good taste and a great dress sense and only wear what will fit and complement your body type and proportions.

Styles for Mother-of-the-Bride

  • Smart and Chic
  • Graceful
  • Elegant and timeless
  • Glamorous
  • Formal
  • Semi-formal

Off- the -shoulder styles can be very appropriate if you use a shawl or a lovely stole jacket. Spaghetti strap gowns are fine too if not cut too low or revealing. And if you are plus size, go for well-cut dresses with detailing that makes the outfit stylish. Steer clear of over-fancy and overtly embellished gowns or dresses.

The secret of choosing a befitting and tasteful mother of the bride dress lies not only in its style, but also in the fabric type, colour, and how you accessorize it.

You deserve some of the glory and attention as well; after all, you ARE the bride’s mother.

very nice. I like your selections and advice. the frumpy dresses do not ever belong at a wedding! my oldest son is getting married this Nov. and I'm so excited. the dress is beautiful, in fact the bride to be helped me choose the perfect one! I love your hubs. they're very well done and so chic. [I think something also important to remember is the location and formality of the reception.]
