Skin Care: 18 Sugar Scrubs Recipes

Sugar scrubs are gentle way to exfoliate, moisturize and smooth dry damaged skin. Sugar scrubs are safe. They can be used two or three times a week on the face or the whole body for an invigorating glow, without damaging your skin.

The main ingredients in an exfoliating sugar scrub are sugar, oil and fragrance.

  • Sugar naturally inhibits the growth of bacteria. It's rough texture helps to slough off dead skin cells, giving you a healthy glow.
  • Oil moisturizes you skin while stimulating your immune system. It clings to the dirt and impurities on your skin, drawing them away from you.
  • Fragrance lifts your spirits and stays with you long after your treatment.

With a few candles and a sugar body scrub you can turn your bath time into a relaxing spa experience.

  1. In the shower or tub, gently massage your body and face, with the scrub of your choice. Pay special attention to dry, rough areas, like your knees and elbows. Rinse.*
  2. While skin is damp, smooth with a body oil, coconut oil or moisturizer.
  3. Pat dry and wrap up in a warm towel. Give yourself permission to relax for 15 minutes.

*The tub or shower may become slippery, as sugar scrubs do contain oil. Watch your step!

Sugar scrubs are available commercially, or you can make your own at home, with a few simple ingredients from your kitchen and your favorite essential oils.

Below you will find more than a dozen recipes for homemade sugar scrubs.

Making your own sugar body scrub is exceedingly simple. Choose a recipe from below or combine a few for your own customized blend.

Some recipes call for your choice of oil.  In these recipes I recommend choosing one of the following:

  • Jojoba Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil

Do not use mineral oil or baby oil.  They do not penetrate your skin and can clog your pores.

Materials:

You will need the ingredients, a glass bowl, a wooden spoon and a container for storage purposed. I prefer glass jars, but plastic containers work just as well.

Basic Instructions:

  • Measure dry ingredients bowl and mix well.
  • If honey is involved in your recipe, drizzle it over the dry ingredients and mix again.
  • Add 1/2 to 3/4 of the oil called for in the recipe and mix. Continue adding oil until all ingredients are saturated. Your scrub is thoroughly mixed when the dry ingredients sink to the bottom of the bowl, with a layer of oil on top.
  • Stir in essential oil or fragrance oil.
  • Transfer to storage container.
