Thierry Mugler Alien: Normal or Not?

Thierry Mugler Alien is an out of this world fragrance that so many love. Though at first look this perfume may seem too unique to even be wearable for most women, curiously, this perfume wavers in between normalcy and oddity. It's difficult to decipher whether this scent is conventionl or not. Perhaps that's simply the appeal of this perfume. Using the following breakdown, find out what's all the confusion and commotion surrouding Thierry Mugler Alien.

1. Alien notes

Thierry Mugler Angel, while actually centered on a traditional floral note (a sweet indolic jasmine), is perhaps one of the most unusual mainstream perfumes out on the beauty counters at the moment. Thierry Mugler Alien notes include solar accord, jasmine sambac, green notes, cashmeran, vanilla, and transparent amber. Though the official notes list boasts concrete and normal notes, the effect is completely something else. Thierry Mugler Alien is an abstract fragrance that creates from its notes an experience that is unpredictable and almost incomprehensible.

2. Ad campaign

The press materials for Thierry Mugler Alien accentuates the surreal, odd nature of the fragrance. The press release states that Thierry Mugler Alien is a perfume is like a talisman which illuminates magical grace and reveals the sparkle and radiance of each woman. The visuals of the campaign feature other-worldly women in even stranger locales. The TV ad captures an alien woman on an abstracted sand dune. From the dry sands she draws a mercurial liquid that just happens to be extremely refreshing and invigorating--the liquid is Thierry Mugler Alien.

Despite the far-out factor of Alien's ad campaign, there is an appealing feminine quality to the visuals and press release. This fragrance is intended to be feminine, it's something that highlights natural feminine beauty, and of course, the models in these ads boast the classic Thierry Mugler curvy seductive form. Clearly this scent celebrates mystery and seduction, two very familiar perfume characteristics that many women know and love.

3. Like Angel, like Alien

Thierry Mugler Alien, like Angel the first fragrance from Thierry Mugler, incorporates a synthetic note, a metallic tiny accord that is both unique and uplifting. Sometimes, green and shiny at other times like wet tin, the synthetic accord plays a big part in this perfume. If you love florals, but are currently sick of the common construction of floral perfumes (i.e. floral and musk, floral and amber, floral and wood, or floral and fruit) Thierry Mugler Alien is probably your best antidote. In Thierry Mugler Alien, the synthetic note immediately turns what might otherwise be a familiar jasmine fragrance into something foreign.

4. Solar accord

Thierry Mugler Alien lists one of its notes as solar accord. This note comes across as the same of the cashmeran accord: something pale, abstract, warm and comforting. Cashmeran accord is known in perfumery to be a soft evocative character, similar to the feel of light cashmere wool. More concretely, however, cashmeran accord is a synthetic mix of amber, musk and florals. The effect--sweet, soft, and warm--is something Thierry Mugler calls the solar accord. As this note is deliciously delicate and comforting like sunlight, it seems this note is aptly name. This solar accord, or cashmeran accord, opens this Thierry Mugler Alien with a uniquely ethereal quality.

5. What critics say

Marina, at top perfume blog Perfume Smellin Things, describes Thierry Mugler Alien as a jasmine scent with a synthetic touch. Despite, the metallic tinge, Marina is shocked that this fragrance is not all about outerspace aliens and moonrocks as she thought it would be. Instead of the overpowering metallics and synthetics, Thierry Mugler Alien is a decadent jasmine perfume to Marina. She calls it a perfume for a "rich woman in fur with a Maltese”. Other top perfume critic, Robin at Now Smell This, is most struck by the large, dominating jasmine smell. Robin enjoys the mix of cashmeran wood, the same metalllic touch that Angel boasted, and this powerful jasmine note. When Thierry Mugler Alien was first launched, Robin originally predicted that this scent would become a big hit. And right she was! It seems the hypnotic wavering between a traditional jasmine note and the unique synthetic notes has everyone deeply captivated.

6. Who Loves Alien

Alien is a great warming scent that is comforting, feminine and optimistic. Most praise this scent for being indescribable. Departing from the normal language of perfumery, Alien fans use the strangest metaphors to get there point across. One reviewer on Basenotes.net describes this scent as follows:

“I cannot think of any word to describe it except 'mysterious'. I think this is what an asteroid would smell like right after it hits the middle of the amazon forest--the asteroid would then smell like Alien right after the Amazonian rains pours on top of it. It smells grape-like but not fruity, soft but not feminine. If tanzanite or aquamarine had an aroma, they would smell like Alien.”

Another Basenotes reviews calls Alien a “warm and subtle jasmine with a slightly greenish metallic something hovering around the edges.” No matter their specific Alien experience, everyone agrees that this perfume is unique, sophisticated and captivating.

7. Start of the synthetic craze

For those who thought that Thierry Mugler Alien was simply too out there to wear, they are in for a big surprise. Thierry Mugler Alien is a definite fusion of the weird and the wonderful--and for that reason everyone loves it. Critics can't be to sure, however, if the success and positive reception of Thierry Mugler Alien means that everyone is slowly adjusting to synthetic notes. So only question that remains is if Thierry Mugler Alien was a more alien would people still like it?

Angel smells like Alien Sunessence. I tested Sunessence at Sephora and I love the dry down, It's not gourmand like Angel. I love how it melts on my skin. I would probably get an Alien soon!

Hi Perfumefan, Alien Sunessence does sound like a sunnier version of the original Alien. That's great that you found one you love!

Original Alien: This is my favorite fragrance. It took me a long time to find it, and I just love it. Very sensuous fragrance that makes me smile every time I put it on. Layering it with the body lotion or body cream is a luxurious experience and make this fragrance last all day and into the night.

I found this scent while looking to pick up some "Innocent". Decided to try it and fell in love with it. It is truly unique and I agree it is almost indescribable. Most other mainstream scents don't have that got-your-attention style that Alien has, they're just 'perfume'. Alien makes a statement and it's my favorite!

Im sorry but 'like alien like angel'? I have worn alien for years, I love it but I cant stand angel or womananity, they are nothing like each other!

I found Alien on one of my flatmates' shelf. She let me use it and I fell in love instantly. I'm not a big fan of perfumes - they always smell alcohol-y but this one was so different. The entire room felt with a fragrance which didn't seem alcoholy.

I agree with Tia that Angel and Alien are two very different scents. I don't care for Angel at all, especially on me, and I can only tolerate it on other people. However, I adore Alien. It is my signature scent!
