Elizabeth Fry replaces George Stephenson from the Series E Bank of England British five pound sterling notes. Elizabeth Fry is known for women prison reform leading to Gaols Act 1823 and Prison Act 1835. Born in 1870 to John Gurney, partner of Gurney’s bank and Catherine from the Barclay family founders of Barclay Bank, Elizabeth Fry was one of 12 siblings. Elizabeth Fry died in 1945.
