Duje Draganja grew up in Croatia during the war for independence. Since then, he competed in the Sydney Olympics as a semifinalist then studied at UC Berkeley in California while swimming with the Bears with trainer Mike Bottoms. With 8 NCAA and 10 Pac-10 championships under his belt, he went on to win a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens for Croatia. Later that year, he was named Athlete of the Year. After Athens he went on to win gold medals in 2006 and 2008 (WR).
