One of the most important things located on Big Pine Key is the , Key Deer Refuge. Yes they are cute aren't they. In case you don't know Key Deer are small dog size deer that live in the Florida Keys and the largest population of them is found on Big Pine Key. The key deer are endangered so everything that can be done to protect them is done. Signs warn motorists along U.S. 1 that the deer are in the area and to please slow down and not hit them.
