Nevada City California during the gold rush era and the female gambler Madame Mustache. Her name was Eleanore Dumont. She made money by opening a gambling parlor in Nevada City that attracted hundreds on miners and prospectors. Madame Mustache later traveled to mining towns and camps throughout the western United States. She died in 1879 in Bodie California.

A story about an alleged duel between Mark Twain and the owner of a competing newspaper. Samuel Clemens changed his pen name to Mark Twain while working as a reporter in Virginia City. He wrote "Roughing It" in the 1860's about his adventures in the wild west and in mining camps in Nevada and California.
