Actinic keratosis is a skin condition that occurs mostly in older adults and involves the appearance of small, rough, scaly patches that may be accompanied by itching or burning. Actinic keratosis is caused by excessive exposure to the sun over a long period of time. Up until now, topical treaments for actinic keratosis have included Fluoroplex and imiquimod. In January 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Picato, a new topical drug that shortens treatment time to 2 or 3 days.
