One of his subjects, Sansevieria hyacinthoides, commonly known as bowstring hemp, is discussed, especially in its current status as an invasive species in Florida. Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) was a dedicated, talented artist who left an unparalleled legacy of realistic, exquisite sketches and paintings of the natural world. Primarily rendering botanical illustrations while also capturing such winsome animals as koalas, Ferdinand devised an intricate chart of over 1000 color references which was one of the secrets to his artistry. His mastery of his craft has earned acclaim for his paintings as equivalent to the supreme artistry of Leonard da Vinci.

Dutch botanical artist Jan Moninckx (c. 1656-1714)created hundreds of spectacular, realistic illustrations for his magnum opus known as Moninckx Atlas. An example of his artistry, Pelargonium peltatum, known commonly in English as ivy-leafed geranium, is featured. A description of this South African native cites its attractiveness to butterflies and its ethnobotanical uses.
