Robert Walser with Susan Bernofsky in THE ASSISTANT
One of these people is certainly a gifted writer. Or, it is possible, both of them are. But I have read Walser when translated by Middleton and I am never as satisfied as I am when Susan Bernofsky chooses the English words and syntax. And I think it is important to note that Bernofsky is a woman. At any rate, whether it be Jenny Erpenbeck or Robert Walser, every writer's page that Bernofsky translates is rich and full of delight for me.
