Belimumab (Benlysta): The First New Drug For Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Since 1955

Belimumab (Benlysta) was approved by the FDA for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in March 2011. Its mechanism of action involves blockade of the binding of B-lymphocyte stimulator protein to its receptors on B-lymphocytes. In clinical trials, belimumab showed efficacy in decreasing disease activity in patients with active SLE. Common side effects included nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, depression, bronchitis and insomnia.
