Antonio Bajamonti was an Italian medical doctor born in Dalmatia. Great lover of Split, he built the town's theater with his own money before winning the election for mayor of Split in 1860. Briefly replaced, Bajamonti returned to his position of mayor which he held until 1880. In that time he built the Prokurative, reconstructed the ancient water system and built a fantastic fountain. From riches to rags, Bajamonti died in 1891, an impoverished man, historically one of Split's best mayors.
