Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the "Grand Canyon of Texas"
The big difference in this canyon and the "grand" one in Arizona besides overall size is the fact that one can drive into Palo Duro Canyon and see things close up as my mother and I did. See many photos of its beauty here in this hub.

The giant saguaro cactus or carnegiea gigantea is the official state symbol of the state of Arizona, and in general for the Sonoran Desert. The saguaro is extremely slow growing and will only grow 1 to 1.5 inches during its first eight years. During periods of rainfall, the saguaro "pleats" expand to store water. It takes approximately 50 years for a saguaro to grow an arm. Frost, drought, vandals, wildfire and non-native grasses are the enemies of the saguaro cactus.
