Chernobyl was a major nuclear disaster that should have provided a warning, but failed to make enough of an impression. Since then, a larger nuclear tragedy unfolded in Japan on March 11, 2011 when a major earthquake and tsunami wrecked a nuclear plant and caused meltdowns in at least two of the four reactors. Since then Germany has decided to phase out all of its nuclear reactors.
