How to get more people to ride public transportation

Living in the Chicago area, public transportation can be a pain in my ... back! With less people riding the buses, fares are increasing, service is poor, and the schedule is a mess. It could be much better if more people rode public transit in place of driving their personal cars to work. But how to accomplish this is an elusive target. So I figured I would put out my ideas to inspire other to take note and help to change the system.
