Sciatica is pain caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, or by inflammation or disease of the nerve. Frequently, sciatica is caused by arthritis of the spine, rupture of a disc, or other conditions that result in pressure on the roots of the nerve. The pain follows the course of the sciatic nerve, which arises in the small of the back and extends down the back of the leg into the foot.
