Built between 1848 and 1854 the Semmering railway over the Semmering Pass (982m) in Eastern Austria was the first true mountain railway of the world. Using several technical artifacts such as viaducts, tunnels and loops it was a true masterpiece of early railway engineering. It is still operated today and has been inscribed by the UNESCO as world heritage in 1998.
