The USS Phoenix light cruiser escaped destruction at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and went on to distinguish herself in the Pacific War with Japan, winning nine battle stars. She was decommissioned after the war and sold to Argentine where she was rechristened ARA General Belgrano and was sunk by a British nuclear-powered submarine during the Falklands War on May 2, 1982.
