Cork is the thick, spongy bark of the cork oak, a tree which grows mainly in Portugal and Spain. Half the world's supplies come from Portugal, where the cork oaks are grown either in plantations or in natural forests. The trees are not very tall but have quite thick trunks, and about forty-five pounds of bark can be taken off at one stripping by a man using a sharp knife and a special axe. Stripping can only be done every ten years, so the growing of cork oaks is combined with farming.
