What is a Kindle?

A Kindle is a portable electronic device that lets you download, store, and read books. It was the first eReader to hit the market, back in the spring of 2008, and is sold exclusively by Amazon.com.

The Kindle lets you read a book one page at a time, just like a printed book. What makes the Kindle so special is it's lightweight design and it's E-Ink technology that makes the screen look just as if you're reading a page from a book. You can even read when sitting in sunlight with no glare.

There are two versions of the Kindle available. The latest Kindle device has a 6 inch screen and sells for about $189, while the Kindle DX offers a much bigger 9.7 inch screen for $379. Both can wirelessly download books in 60 seconds, meaning you don't need to use a computer to buy and download books. The 6 inch Kindle can store 1,500 books and the Kindle DX holds 3,500 books.

Why Kindles Make Great Gifts for Kids

In no particular order, here are the reasons why a Kindle makes the perfect gift for kids:

  1. The Kindle is portable and easy to carry wherever you go, so it's possible for kids to read in the car, in the dentist's waiting room, and on the drive back home. Your books are always available, giving you more opportunities to read.
  2. The Kindle has a built-in dictionary, making it easy for kids to quickly learn the meaning of new words.
  3. The Kindle has adjustable text size, which lets you increase the font to make text easier to read.
  4. No storage problems at home. You won't need to keep finding room on bookshelves for new purchases because electronic books are stored on the Kindle.
  5. Kids who are intimidated by books may be more comfortable using this thin, lightweight device. And anything that helps kids keep reading is good.
  6. It's easy to buy more books, because the Kindle does this wirelessly with no PC necessary. Just browse the Kindle Bookstore directly from your Kindle wherever you are, and with a click you can purchase and download a new title.
  7. There are lots of free e-books available! That's right, Amazon offers over 1.8 million free e-books (only those that are out-of-copyright) like Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, Huck Finn, Mother Goose and many more.
  8. There will be even more children's book titles available in the future, since children's e-books are one of the fastest growing areas in the Kindle store at Amazon.com.
  9. Prices are falling. The Kindle used to cost $399, and is now selling for $189.
  10. You can read a chapter of any book for free before deciding to buy.

Where Can I Buy a Kindle and E-Books?

The Kindle is sold only by Amazon at their online store. Amazon also sells a huge selection of e-books that can be downloaded to the Kindle including textbooks, New York Times Bestsellers, Award Winners and foreign language books.

Amazon has a separate list of Kindle e-books for children.
