Analysis and Comparison of 1G , 2G , 3G ,4G and 5G Telecom Services

The Journey of “G” from 1 to 5 th Generation

Until the controversial spectrum scams were brought up in the limelight many were ignorant of what 1G, 2G or 3G stood for and all of a sudden a hike was found out amongst laymen so as to be knowledgeable about it. Still a number of people are unaware of 1G or 2G when the world has moved on to 4G.

The telecommunication service in World had a great leap within a last few year. . 6 billion people own a mobile phones so we are going to analyze the various generations of cellular systems as studied in the evolution of mobile communications from 1st generation to 5th generation .Now almost all the service providers as well as the customers seek for availing these 3G and 4G services.

We can analyze that this could be due to increase in the telecoms customers day by day. In the present time, there are four generations in the mobile industry. These are respectively 1G the first generation, 2G the second generation, 3G the third generation, and then the 4G the forth generation. Ericson a Swedish company is launching this high tech featured mobile into the market. It is being first introduced in the Swedish Capital city, Stockholm.

Present Status of Telecommunication Services in Asian Countries

Now we are in the midst of 4G. In China, the 3G service came into existence only by last February. Therefore, that it may take time for exposing to other states. But we should also realize many other countries such as the Asian countries were using these services since last decade. Due to these reasons, we can hope that the 4G may enter within a few years. The 3G (Third Generation) had also reached India recently. There is no doubt that within a few years India will be the first in telecom users also.

What is 2G ?

Second Generation (2G) wireless cellular mobile services was a step ahead of First Generation( 1G) services by providing the facility of short message service(SMS) unlike 1G that had its prime focus on verbal communication. A typical 2G G.S.M network service ranges from 800/900MHz or 1800/1900 spectrum. The bandwidth of 2G is 30-200 KHz.

Let us examine what these 3G & 4G have rather than that of 1G and 2G.

Analysis of 1G and 2G services

In 1G, Narrow band analogue wireless network is used, with this we can have the voice calls and can send text messages. These services are provided with circuit switching. Today’s the usual call starts from the beginning pulse to rate to the final rate. Then in case of 2G Narrow Band Wireless Digital Network is used. It brings more clarity to the conversation and both these circuit-switching model.

Both the 1G and 2G deals with voice calls and has to utilize the maximum bandwidth as well as a limited till sending messages i.e. SMS. The latest technologies such as GPRS, is not available in these generations. But the greatest disadvantage as concerned to 1G is that with this we could contact with in the premises of that particular nation, whereas in case of 2G the roaming facility a semi-global facility is available.

2.5 Generation

In between 2G and 3G there is another generation called 2.5G. Firstly, this mid generation was introduced mainly for involving latest bandwidth technology with addition to the existing 2G generation. To be frank but this had not brought out any new evolution and so had not clicked to as much to that extend.

What is 3G Generation

But to overcome the limitations of 2G and 2.5G the 3G had been introduced. In this 3G Wide Brand Wireless Network is used with which the clarity increases and gives the perfection as like that of a real conversation. The data are sent through the technology called Packet Switching .Voice calls are interpreted through Circuit Switching. It is a highly sophisticated form of communication that has come up in the last decade.

In addition to verbal communication it includes data services, access to television/video, categorizing it into triple play service. 3G operates at a range of 2100MHz and has a bandwidth of 15-20MHz. High speed internet service, video chatting are the assets of 3G.

How is 2G different from 3G?

  • In comparison to 2G customers will have to pay a relatively high license fee for 3G.
  • The network construction and maintenance for 3G is much expensive than 2G.
  • From the point of view of customers, expenditure will be excessively high if they make access to various facets of 3G.

What is Packet Switching

This is actually done by supplying various addressed packets, which will be interconnected to have the conversation. It is not necessary to create a new dedicated path for sending the data. It had been modified in such a way that the data can be send through any path; hence, this data will be received at a less time as compared to that of voice calls.

Packet Switching in Computer networks

The data packs are also used in computer that is when we connected with internet this data pack helps to download the web pages that is being displayed in the monitor. For a Data Pack it does not need any separate path for downloading or displaying any objects in the computer or any other equipment. This is due to the reason that by networking, separate paths are being created and after analyzing each, the data are being transferred to the correct access point.

Hub Challenge 18 out of 30 : Analysis and Comparison of 1G , 2G , 3G ,4G and 5G Telecom Services

Main 3G Services

With the help of 3G, we can access many new services too. One such service is the GLOBAL ROAMING. Another thing to be noted in case of 3G is that Wide Band Voice Channel that is by this the world has been contracted to a little village because a person can contact with other person located in any part of the world and can even send messages too. Then the point to be noted is that 3G gives clarity of voice as well can talk with out any disturbance. Not only these but also have entertainments such as Fast Communication, Internet, Mobile T.V, Video Conferencing, Video Calls, Multi Media Messaging Service (MMS), 3D gaming, Multi-Gaming etc are also available with 3G phones.

What is the reason for delay in implementing 3G and 4G Mobile services?

It is very sad to say that the 3G services had only reached with in some towns of china, so that it may take time to reach to Other countries. Another major defect of this is that Wide Band Frequency Spectrum, which is needed for 3G, is lacking. Another reason for this is that it a cost bearing item especially for sending data. So for us it is a higher one which could be used only by upper classes. If it should be accepted among all customers, firstly it should be availed at a lower rate, for which the rate of spectrum should be declined.

4g Services In India

A new revolution in the mobile market of India has begun by Bharathi Airtel, one of the leading mobile companies in the country, which has started their services for the fourth generation mobiles in Kolkata. The internet speed of 4G mobile service is 100MBPS (21 MB per second), when compared to the low speed of 21MBPS in 3G mobiles. Other mobile companies are also planning to make 4G services available. The companies namely Reliance infotel and Qualcomm have got licence to make the 4G service available in Kerala.

Main 4G Features

When It is still to estimate as to how many number of people have moved on from 2G to 3G , technology has come up with the latest of its type namely 4G.A successor of 2G and 3G, 4G promises a downloading speed of 100Mbps and is yet to shower its wonders on. then with the case of Fourth Generation that is 4G in addition to that of the services of 3G some additional features such as Multi-Media Newspapers, also to watch T.V programs with the clarity as to that of an ordinary T.V. In addition, we can send Data much faster that that of the previous generations.

Companies that make available 4G services in India

It is the Reliance industry that has got 4G licence in the 22 circles of the country. It was possible due to its adoption of the company Infotel. Airtel has got licence in four circles, which include Kolkata. Other companies: BSNL (20 circles), Aircel(8 circles), Tikona( 5 circles), Qualcomm( 4 circles), MTNL( 2 circles), Auger( 1 circle). Even though Qualcomm has got licence, it hasn’t got spectrum yet.

Distinguishing features of 4G

The convenience of a faster internet browsing is the main benefit of 4G when compared to 3G mobiles. In 4G mobiles, videos and other things can be downloaded at a speed that is four times that of 3G.But at present speaking facility is not made available in 4G. That means to provide call facilities for companies providing 4G, they need 2G licence.

When 3G services were presented, it was widely believed that it would bring about a revolutionary change in the communicative field. But later widening their services throughout the country became deliberately slow. The failure of companies to transform the 2G service users to 3G was the main reason for it. The obstruction for widening 3G throughout the country was another reason for the failure of third generation mobiles. The companies didn’t show much interest to decide a substantial amount for 3G services. But the judgement of those in the telecom field is that, these all are just some mistakes in the beginning and it will be transformed gradually.

The technique used in 4G

Most of the tablet-mobile producing companies are looking forward for the technique that the companies would use to provide 4G services. Airtel is going to use the TDLTE (Time Division- Long Term Evolution) technique. Airtel claims that this technique would offer 100 MBPS internet speed in mobiles. This can be used also in 2G and 3G services. But to provide this facility Bharathi Airtel has also got to come across many difficulties. When this service was experimented in Kolkata, it was found by the telecom department that there was a delay of 4-5 minutes. The telecom department has also asked Airtel to find a solution for it that would save more time.

ya you right, I am from south India, 3G was introduced on last monday. And here most of the guys are unaware, what is 3G. only they know is video calling using 3G.

in India 3G is delayed due to the allocation of spectrum. due to huge number of mobile connections, the government is confused to divide the spectrum.

about 4G. i heard it has a bandwidth of 5Gbps. is that true?

5Gbps = 625MB per second. i can download a movie within a second. i got this info from japanese Ntt docomo site.

anyway thanks for sharing your Hub.

"In 1G, Narrow band analogue wireless network is used, with this we can have the voice calls and can send text messages."

Not true. SMS capabilites were not supported until 2G digital AMPS networks. The first SMS was sent in the UK in 1991.

Overall, an informative article for beginners.

4G is a very exciting prospect, with Gigabit speeds possible. WiMAX and LTE (Long Term Evolution) are the main contenders, and it seems that though WiMAX will be more common (5 times more users predicted in 2013 than LTE), experts predict LTE will be the 4G technology of choice.

It's not helping WiMAX technology that the only mobile operator backing it in the USA currently is Sprint, which is experiencing its own problems.

4G isn't as much about "standards" as it is about "requirements". As long as the requirements are met, ie IP based, over packet switching network, etc (look it up on wikipedia), it can be classed as 4G.

They say you can get 2Mbps over 3G - I personally experience speeds more like GPRS in the UK on a 3G network, so I'm not going to hold my breath about promised speeds over 4G.

It's a very interesting topic, both broad and in-depth. I suggest readers of this hub read wikipedia articles for further and more accurate information.

Yes, I am agree that newly available 3G mobiles substantially change all our expectations from cellular phone. Though with 3G mobiles we can make things like gaming, messaging more interesting, it is must to provide attention for its availability, as well as making it cost effective. I guess more invention in the related area is essential. If it is so then it will surely new big achievement in telecom sector.

Pramod Yadav(P.K. RAO) 5 years ago

Hello friends, i want to just share my views on telecommunication services.

In India 3G has been launched before few months but we are too late. Many of the countries use the 3G technology very earlier i.e. from the starting of 2010. Japan, Canada are one of them & they are going to use of 4G technology but in India the 4G have become developed in around 2015 & 80% of people does't know exactly about 3G, only the 5 to 10% people now use the 3G technology in India. so think how much we are in backward as compare to other countries in telecommunication.

In 3G technology, there is video chat & calling, fast speed upto 21mbps, Live mobile Gaming, voice clarity etc, many of these facilities are available.

In 4G technology, it provides all of 3G services more clearly. we get the benefit of listen music & watch movies, play online multiplayer games anywhere. It provides the speed 1GBps at indoor & 100 mbps while traveling acc. to the experts.

When we are outside our home & someone rings our doorbell then it inform us. Smart antennas are placed everywhere to provide the latest speed. Protocol IPv6 use for this technology. Japan & some other countries may use the 4G technology around 2014. For launching of this technology in India the investment should be around 400 crores.

Now the 5G Technology is under development, acc. to Experts it provide more speed as compare to 4G. Acc. to them, if someone is cooking & you are not there & he/she wants tosmell it, he/she wii be able to that.

Other feature is that you can speak without emitting any voice. This could be used in case you are in Library or in Exam Hall & tou can not speak out loudly. You will be able to communicate just by moving your mouth.

Please note that all these features are et initial stage of reasearch & is not viable long time to come.

If any of the person likes this topic & he/she get the usual knowledge/Information about the topic or if you find any kind of mistake then give me feedback.

Thanks

Deepak 5 years ago

About 5G: Its just a research topic for labs and scientists, there is a guese that this technology will be around us in about 2020, there is no information about the speed it will provide, but it is said that, 5G will provide something more fascinating than internet speed( Like amazing battery usage , and high speed artificial intelligence computing via internet).

About 4G: There is no country in the whole world which is provinding 4G, they brag about it, but thats false, they are all providing pre-4G, which gives a peek speed of 256 mbps(provided by LTE), or less than that, according to standards about 4G, it should have a peek speed of 1GBPS for immovable people, and 100 MBPS for cars and trains. No one till now meet these standard defination of data transfer rate. This will come in avtion around 2015.

About 3G: You all very well know about 3G networks, right now its too much expensive for normal people to use it, but soon enough it will become cheap as companies will start recovering their money, that they put in buying these bandwidth(3G).

About 2G:

The best thing for people like me who belong to a middle class family and dont want to spend much, is this bandwidth.

If you have a 3G handset, then you can enjoy a very good speed(max speed around 200kbps,normal speed of 100kbps,with the help of Internet download manager, ofcourse) via normal GPRS pack. Yes, that is true. Because with this 3G handset you are actually accessing edge(UMTS), not GPRS, Which is like 3G only. Ofcourse you should have a 3G network for that.

I will suggest some(who stay in india),

Best is AIRTEL(2 GB in 100 rs)

then tata docomo(4 Gb in 100 and 8 gb in 150 rs)

Others are also there, like BSNL and vodafone.

Beleive me, they are best for normal usage, even if you wana play games like warcraft or wow(LAGG FREE).

So that was all, hope this will help, I didn't explained 1G, because its not used now a days...:D

With 4g being implemented in most major cities in America, and most companies (here at least) having a deadline of 2014 to get all towers converted to 4g with some being ahead of schedule, other countries behind us (I can't think of another way to say it) can expect starter 4g by 2016 (assuming slow, considering that technology is snowballing, mid 2015 is more likely).

Releasing 4G or 5G is not a problem but Indian Telecom should see that the bandwidth and spectrum are legal as we find no birds at present in just 2G

More 5g and 6g features will be updated soon....

rajeshcpandey 4 years ago from India

I think 4G will become available at competitive rates in INDIA only after

(1)The launch of the service by Reliance since it provides affordable and useful packages, and

(2)4G service can be used on cell phones. As of now, you can use it only on tablets/ laptops.

You mentioned 5G in the topic but not actually get that far in the article. Although, I haven't really heard anything about 5G.

a t kishore 3 years ago

Generations beyond LTE are mere speculations at this moment

LTE-A is true 4G

LTE-B is supposed to be around in 2020 with 1000 times more throughput

No official stamp of that as 5G yet

Rest all is mere imagination
