8 Port Switch

Most businesses and many private homes today contains various networks of computers. Even a small business may have several computers linked together, from the secretary’s desk to the sales team to the boss’s office. And if there is a family living in a home, it is quite likely there will be multiple computers in use, including those in the home office, in the kids’ rooms, and a laptop or two. In either case, it is likely that you will need and want to use an Ethernet switch that will allow several computers to share the same internet connection and share data between them. Such Ethernet switches provide a place from which these connections can be made.

It may be that you are looking to set up a network like this in your home or office or perhaps you want to expand the network by bringing in more computers. At this time, you should look into purchasing an 8 port switch, which will allow for growth in your home or business network.

Hubs versus Switches

Before you start shopping for an 8 port switch, you should probably now a bit about the differences between network hubs and switches and the advantage of purchasing a switch rather than setting up a hub of computers. In a hub, all computers in the network are linked together equally, so that whatever information is sent to one computer through the internet, that information is sent to all the other computers as well. In the same way, when one computer in a hub sends out information to the internet, all the others in the hub will receive it too. What can occur in situations like this is that your bandwidth is exceeded and your internet connection slows down. This occurs despite the fact that not all computers in your network need to receive all of the information that is received and sent.

8 port switches, on the other hand, configure the network so that only pairs of computers share information at the same time. The 8 port switch can detect when two computers need to share data and turns that connection on. This results in much faster internet downloads and uploads without the interference that results from all computers working simultaneously.

Brands of 8 Port Switches

One of the most popular and widely used brands of all 8 port switches on the market today, are the switches manufactured by Netgear. Netgear provides many homes, offices, schools, and other organizations with the ability to link computers into functional networks. Many of their 8 port switches allow for either 10 or 100 megabytes per second speeds, depending on the kinds of data particular computers in the network are sharing. As with most 8 port switches, the Netgear 8 port switch determines which pairs of computers should be linked at any one time so as to eliminate unneeded interference and increase connection speeds.

Another well-known brand of 8 port switch is D-Link. Like Netgear, D-Link sells a number of switches of varying features and designs. One interesting 8 port switch made by these folks is that which they call the “green” Ethernet switch. This 8 port switch has a low power requirement so that it uses less electricity than standard switches. Not only does this result in lower power usage for the home or business, it also means that the switch runs cooler, thus lengthening its lifetime. You will spend less money with this switch while reducing your impact on the environment.

A third well-known and well-used maker of 8 port switches is Cisco-Linsys. Their EtherFast 8 port switch runs at speeds up to 200 megabytes per second, making this switch ideal for sending data of very large sizes. Video and multimedia data are passed through the network and to and from the internet at very high rates of speed.

8 Port Switches: Room to Grow

What all three of the above mention switch brands allow you to do is to expand your networking capabilities. The 8 ports mean that you won’t find yourself buying a smaller switch now and then having to upgrade later when your business or home computing grows. This will not only save you time and money down the road, it will save you the hassle of having to re-network your computers through a new switch later on. You’ll just plug in and get to work!
