Best PC Gaming Wireless Routers 2013

In this post, we'll review the top 10 wireless N routers and let you know where you can get the best bang for your buck.

If you're home is more than a single floor or if you've experienced the frustration of trying to find you wireless signal within your home without any success, then it might be time to get a new wireless router.

*Tips for testing your current wireless router

Routers slowly begin to wear down after time and if you've noticed a dip in your overall bandwidth (speedtest.net to test), then the problem could be beyond just your internet service provider. A way to test this is by plugging a laptop directly in to your router, running a speed test, and then unplugging your laptop to see what kind of bandwidth you get from your wireless signal. If the difference is significant, then your router needs to be replaced.

N vs. G Wireless Routers

Routers have made significant advancements in the last few years. A good router in today's market will operate on dual band technology. This means that it can broadcast simultaneously in 2 different frequencies (2.4ghz and 5.0ghz). The result is a better signal and potentially less congestion if you connect at the 5.0ghz frequency.

The new N series of routers can operate at both signals. Since many common wireless devices like cell phones and cordless phones share a signal with the 2.4ghz band that your G router uses the bandwidth and connection that you get is often distorted. In addition G routers can offer you up to 56Mbps whereas the newer N routers give you as Netgear states "The result is a combined 600 Mbps speed, with real throughput of over 350 Mbps over your wireless network." The 5.0 Ghz frequency is also more efficient at closer distances since it can break through barriers like walls more easily than G routers.

For medium size home users, we recommend you go with either the Cisco-Linksys E2000 or the D-Link DIR-665 Wireless N Routers. We recently upgraded our home office to the E2000, and it's doubled the speed that we get downstairs in our home.

While users with large homes may want to consider the E3000, for smaller homes you'd be more than fine going with the featured Medialink router or the Cisco E1000 N Routers. In fact, the Medialink router is the bestselling wireless router on Amazon to date. Some of this stems from the fact that Cisco has multiple routers in the top 10 that effectively steal market share from each other, but the price and specifications of the inexpensive Medialink router are hard to ignore.

Cisco-Linksys E2000 Wireless N Router

As was mentioned before, we recently upgraded to the E2000 in our home and couldn't be more satisfied. Personally we like the range, signal strength, and the sleek look of its design. Routers that have the external antennas always seem to get in the way. Our personal experience along with reviews from consumers everywhere point to this device as the best wireless N Router of 2011. Here are some of the manufacturer's key features:

  • Enjoy the benefits of advanced Wireless-N technology and extended range--ideal for larger homes.
  • Connect your computers, gaming consoles, Internet-enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray players, and other wireless devices at up to 300 Mbps of transfer speeds.
  • Use four Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports for faster file sharing with other Gigabit-enabled devices, including computers, hard drives, and servers.
  • Utilize selectable dual-band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) to avoid interference on your network, allowing for smoother file transfers and media streaming.
  • Set up your wireless network in a few simple steps using included Cisco Connect software.
  • Connect additional computers and other devices using Cisco Connect.
  • Keep Wi-Fi freeloaders and Internet threats at bay with customizable security settings, including WPA/WPA2 Personal and SPI firewall protection.

  • Give visitors password-protected Internet access on a separate network--so your visitors have access to the Internet, but not your computers or data.
  • Use Cisco Connect's Parental Controls to block specific websites and restrict Internet access during certain hours.
  • Customize your network using easily accessible Advanced Settings."

Consumer Comments on Amazon about the E2000 Wireless N Router:

"I actually feared installing a wireless router. After asking around and researching -- this was the one to buy b/c of ease of install, quality of product, range, lack of drops, etc. After one month, nothing but flying colors. Easily the best tech product I have ever purchased! And, again, cannot believe how easy the install was!"

"Do not hesitate to buy this router. It works great, and set up was easy. I'm not very computer savvy, but I had this thing up and running within 15 minutes. That includes the time it took to unbox it and flip through the contents and paperwork to see what's what. Put the CD in, and plug in this and that cord when it tells you, and voila. It's in my master bedroom, and I'm streaming Netflix almost on the other side of my [small] house with no problems."

"This wonderful router worked straight out of the box. I had no ploblem adding computers or a wireless printer to the network. It also has a guest network, which is a great feature... This was a worthwhile purchase."

D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router

The D-Link DIR-655 has been around since the middle of 2007. It's been tested and improved upon. Although I personally prefer the newer E2000, the DIR-655 is a definite option at this price range for users who want time-tested performance.

  • Delivers up to 14x faster speeds* and 6x farther range* than 802.11g means Greater Coverage for Your Entire Home or Office
  • Ideal for streaming HD video or streaming multiple applications simultaneously
  • Intelligent QoS technology prioritizes both wired and wireless Internet traffic to enable enhanced gaming and phone calling (VoIP) experience
  • Gigabit Ports for Incredible Wired Network Speeds
  • Dual active firewall protection (SPI & NAT) helps block malicious attacks on networks from the Internet.

What one Verified owner had to say about it:

"Very satisfied. Smaller than expected. Fast enough to play HD-DVDs wirelessly to my notebook (Dell Inspiron E1505, 802.11BGN, 945GM, Core Duo (2) 2GHz, Vista Premium, Arcsoft Digital Theater, D-Link DNS-323 NAS). Great speed and coverage. 120 to 240 volts. Also handles HDTV perfectly via HDHomeRun device. "

"I used to have a few problems with WiFi. The first problem was obviously the range...as I said a few moments ago, the DIR-655 fixed that...I mean, even though it claims 6x range, but I was going to be happy with just a 25% improvement...I seriously think that this router increased my range 50-75%! "

" The set up took about 10 minutes. The set up CD has clear and easy to follow instructions. The speed is amazing. I highly recommend this router to everyone and will."
