Build Your Pro Karaoke DJ System | Best Mobile System under $2K
There are many ways to build a mobile Karaoke DJ system. I think this option marries the best in both performance and durability. I got refined guidance from sandra rinck on her objectives after I gave my original short answer. So with that in mind the objective was to put together a mobile system that could do a professional job for around $2,000.00. My complete answer is in this article and the product reviews mentioned.
I base these reviews on my work in Iraq as an Morale Welfare and Recreation contractor. I hosted, taught hosting, or supervised event hosting for 4 and a half years. Generally a couple times a week. I was a Supervisor for about half that time so I had the responsibility to order new equipment to establish programs or replace equipment that was unserviceable. It was an eye opening experience, as when it comes to Karaoke, there are only a couple major manufacturers, and most are sadly lacking in quality and durability. I will grant that the environment I operated in was harsh. But upon investigating products and actually reading hundreds of product reviews across the web there are many that agree with me even in the more benign environments of the US and Europe.
So here is the product list and an overview of each piece. By the way, I do club sound consulting and if you are a club owner and want an evaluation of your current system, or a plan for a new one you can contact me by email through this forum. Fixed position needs and options are significantly different than mobile ones. I charge a reasonable hourly rate plus travel and per diem expenses; but am available (at the moment) for world wide travel. My recommendations are always based on managing to your budget. You should plan at least 6 weeks in advance if you want me to come on site though I can do a comprehensive job via the web if you are a competent sound manager/DJ/KJ and can provide me pertinent info through email and photos.
Fender Passport PD250 PA system-600.00 is the heart of a mobile DJ system. The durability and quality of Fenders equipment was proven to me time and time again; for small to medium size venues (up to 10,000 sq ft) this is a great piece of equipment and will provide you many years of service with minimal maintenance.
Numark KMX02 Karaoke Mix Station-500.00 if the PA system is the heart of your DJ system than the KMX-02 is its soul. Numark is the clear winner in the quality equipment department for Karaoke and other DJ gear. I cannot stress this enough as I think it’s a fools errand to get a low cost system that will have to be replaced at least yearly under the normal use of one or two mobile shows a week. The KMX02 clears up the chief complaint of the 01 with the addition of key control and marks this unit as the hands down winner in an integrated mixer-player.
Behringer VS1220F Floor Monitor-$130.00 X2 = 260.00 with the Fender Passport these are not as critical to the show as they are with so many other systems. However stage monitors are the mark of professionalism that your very best customers will recognize. When they do your ‘Karaoke Posse’ develops and so does your clients business. I am amazed at how many places I go that do not provide this essential element.
Coby TFTV1524 15-Inch Widescreen LCD HDTV/Monitor with HDMI Input, Black
120.00 X2 240.00 – This is the last essential element in the system and you could start with one each if you need to keep costs down. Any good small TV will work I chose this one because of its options to switch from raw video to computer generated graphics.
Total so Far $1600.00
Music Sweet Georgia Brown 1000 songs 100.00 – This 66 disc package delivers a great show on it’s own and expansion is pretty easy. The quality of the music is great. There are no copyright issues so long as your do not attempt to record and distribute CD’s or videos produced by you for your singers. The costs of this package has come down over the last couple of years but do your homework though and pay a little extra to get it with the song book if you can. Use the extra $100 to update the package with Christmas carols, St Patrick ’s Day Songs, and whatever you think your customers want. Total Music $200.00
Flat Screen TV Stand with Microphone Holders @ karaoke.com and other accessories -$200.00. The advertised cost is $89.00 you’ll need one for each TV. You will also need some additional XLR mic cables (recommend 50’), and additional RCA video and Audio cables (30-50’ are best) and a couple of ¼ in Phono Plug Speaker Cables (25-50’) as the 20’ cables provided are generally adequate but are just not long enough to provide you much attitude in your setup. You can get by with the OEM cables but these are worth the investment. Mic stands can be gotten for as little as $12 apiece on the web from many sources I like the On Stage Brand.
Total Package $2000.00
So after the basics here are items (in order) I would add as soon as business/budget allows
Shure 55SH Series II Cardioid Dynamic Microphone-$179.00
Cowboy Hats, Boas, plastic instruments – Stuff I call Karaoke Toys.$?? How much fun you wanna have?
VocoPro UHF5805 4-Channel Rechargeable Handheld Wireless Microphone System-$420.00
Shure PG288/PG58 Dual Vocal Wireless System-$549.00
In the End Karaoke is all about having fun whether or not you are a budding superstar, a shower singer gone wild, or a 6 beer showman. As the KJ you cater to them all by a quality sound setting and photo or camera phone video op of your customers, while increasing or enhancing your clients business. Those objectives require that your system be reliable, flexible, and powerful enough to handle the conditions the venue hands you. While there are as many preferences as there are DJ’s I do not think that any knowledgeable professional would argue with the capabilities this combination provides. Good luck Sandra on your endeavor and let us know how it all works out.
