Buy Musical Instruments For Students Online

Updated on March 11, 2011

Studies have shown that when children play a musical instrument while in school their grades improve. Playing musical instruments teaches a child discipline and how to get along and cooperate with others. Nothing bad can come out of a child learning to play a musical instrument. When my kids were young they wanted to play in the band, so I said yes. The school had a parent band night so that we knew what was expected of our child where the band was concerned and to rent the musical instrument they had chosen. Wow what an eye opener that night was. My youngest son had decided to play the saxophone. One of the most expensive instruments to rent. The year was 2001 and he was 10 and in the 5th grade. At that time the saxophone was 60 dollars a month to rent and we had to rent it for 9 months. That was 540 dollars for the 9 month period. Are they kidding me?? I can't even begin to imagine how much to rent a saxophone today would cost. I looked into buying a saxophone and they are about 1500 dollars for a really good one. But you can get them for less if you look around. My child played saxophone for 8 years and that would have cost me 4320 dollars for those 8 years, I could have bought 3 saxes for that kind of money. Now we did rent the first year to make sure he really wanted to stick with this and when he did we went out and bought a new saxophone for about 500 dollars. Not the highest end saxophone but it served him well for 7 years of his school band participation. So my suggestion is make sure you kid really wants to play and then buy him or her their instrument. In the long run you will save a ton of money.

Buying is More Affordable Than Renting

All in all buying and owning a musical instrument will be much more affordable than renting. When you rent an instrument you use it and then you child has to give it back. There will be no practicing in the summer when school is not in session. The best thing you can do for your budget is to buy your child's instrument and then he or she has access all year long to the musical instrument of their choice. I bought both my son's instruments and saved thousands of dollars during their school band years. And I'm so happy I did.
