Cell Phone Use and Texting While Driving=Danger

My Two Recent Maniac on a Cell Phone Stories

I was inspired to write this hub on Sunday as I was driving to work on the interstate and I came upon an emergency vehicle that was driving very slowly. I happen to glance over and the driver had his hand up by his ear obviously talking on a cell phone. Can you imagine my surprise and chagrin at the sight?

Now I will give you another crazy story. I was driving down the street that parallels the one that I live on. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour. I look in my rear view mirror and there is this woman in a big SUV behind me so close (yes tailgating) that I could see she was talking on her cell phone. I was about to turn left so I signaled and stepped on the brake. She was not paying attention and had to swerve to the left (the way I was about to turn) and passed me. She actually had the nerve to shoot me a dirty look. I cursed and was glad that the kids weren't with me. I really wish she had hit me. That would have taught her a lesson, and I would have gotten a new vehicle.

E-Mail

The following photos were sent to me by my father-in-law today. I was shocked and appalled at these images and the apparent story behind them. Yes you guessed it! Cell phone use while driving.

Apparently the driver of the VW was talking on the cell phone and failed to notice an oncoming motorcycle. The motorcycle was traveling at approximately 85 miles per hour (the motorcycle was called a "crotch rocket") and the driver of the VW pulled out in front of it. The force of the impact made the VW flip over and land 20 feet from where the impact took place.

The driver of the motorcycle was found inside the car along with the two passengers. No one survived.

This vehicle was displayed by the Police and Road Safety Department at a Motorcycle fair. Now I realize that not every e-mail you get is really a true story. But this sure could scare some people. It made me feel ill when I read it.

Take a close look at this totaled vehicle. Do you see the motorcycle?

Pass it On

Even if this turns out to be a hoax there are still so many other horrific accidents that happen every day because of someone not paying attention, talking or texting on a cell phone. Please think twice about using your cell phone while you're driving.

Think about it folks. All you have to do is not talk on the phone while you are driving. It could be the difference between life or death. How would you live with yourself if you were to cause an accident because you were distracted by a cell phone call? I couldn't live with the choice I made if it were me. There is nothing more simple than just putting the phone down until you are in the parking lot or stopped somewhere. Yes, it's that simple.

Every day, I see people texting while driving. My husband and I were on the freeway just yesterday and watch this girl texting for probably 10 minutes. Not to mention she cut across two lanes in the process. It's really scary out there these days. Good idea for a hub. Nice job.

This practice makes me lose my mind. I watch these idiots traveling 25 miles an hour on a 55 MPH road and they are completely oblivious to the world around them.

I can beat that. I saw someone the other day driving with a opened book perched up on the steering wheel.

My motorcycle has been parked for weeks!

In NY the law is you have to be hands-free, but that isn't really good enough. Little children, 2 and 3 years old, know Mom or Dad aren't paying attention when they're on the phone. (My children always took advantage of that time to get into mischief.) Your mind is elsewhere while you're talking and listening, so much so that even a two-year-old realizes it. As for texting and driving! One of the first fatalities a state cop in VT investigated was a man who had been searching for a CD and took his eyes off the road for a few seconds. That's all it takes.

Hi Sage...I knew I would get a good response from this one. I have to admit I have been guilty. I don't do it as a rule though. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. It's always great to see you!

Hey POP! Yes there are idiots everywhere. There are no cell phone laws here in MS. The lawmakers have bigger troubles than people using cell phones while driving, too bad because people really abuse the law. I have seen police officers talking on them while they are driving. I just got really inspired by that e-mail that my FIL sent me today.

What did you think of those pictures? Do you think they are real? Thanks for dropping by, it's always great to see you!

Hi Tammy

Great hub indeed-We had a serious clamp down here a number of years ago due to the high rate of fatalities on the road,so now if you are caught using a cell phone,or other driving offences, you get 2 points on your licence-10 points and you're off the road for a designated period. The incidences of fatal RTAs has dropped significantly in recent months.

So true Tammy - and they're putting everyone around them on the road at risk. In the city we live in, they've just hiked the fine if caught talking on the cell phone but it doesn't seem to have made too much of a difference :(

"Quill" 6 years ago

It only takes a split second to loose control at the best of times. Here in Canada to laws are being adapted to ban cell phone use all together while driving, let alone texting...what a shame to think of the loss of life.

Blessings on a great Hub

Excellent article Tammy and thanks. You have no idea how often here in Florida (where citizens still enjoy "freedom" to talk/text while driving) I see someone doing something very stupid while trying to drive while doing something else. What I don't understand is why we suddenly need to be connected to the world at all times. Can someone explain this to me? How did we live before all this? Lynda

Well it is not hard to totally agree with you here, Tammy. I can always tell when someone is on their cell. They either drive way too fast, or way too slow. I guess they think by driving slower they are being safer, but they don't seem to understand that they are still distracted and could easily hit someone or something before they realize it. I would rather die, than cause the death or someone just because I wanted the convenience of talking on the phone. Great info. If one person changes their behaviour as a result of reading your hub, wouldn't that be terrific?

Texting and driving; talking and driving........... I think most all of us have been guilty of this at one time or another............. me, I am now consciously trying not do either! The only people who really text me are my kids.......... and I have told them both to hold their pants on if they don't IMMEDIATELY hear back from me, that I won't respond while driving. I've told them to do the same.........

Useful truth.......... you've done a great job here!

Excellent hub, Tammy. How can a person possibly think they can text on the phone and maintain control of a moving vehicle? And the other thing, it's so nervewracking for other drivers when they're stuck behind a driver who's plodding along while chatting with their cell phone up to their ear. If they just have to be on the phone while driving, then get a bluetooth earpiece, at least then they can keep their hands on the wheel and drive at the speed limit, and control the car. Thanks again for the great and informative piece.

People texting while driving are beyond dangerous and selfish, it is enough to be distracting while using a cell phone at high speed but texting! The height of ignorance, arrogance and selfishness.

Tammy Lochmann profile image

Tammy Lochmann 6 years ago Author

billyaustindillon...I totally agree...I already have two distractions most of the time in the vehicle so the cell phone stays put until I am at home or stopped safely somewhere. Like I mentioned above I have been put in danger from people who are distracted by cell phones already...There are other times when I have almost been hit by a driver on cell phones...Just in front of my house when I was turning in the drive they weren't paying attention and had to avoid hitting me by passing on the side that I was turning. I have had the kids in the car with me on several instances.

Thanks for stopping by and adding your valuable opinion.

I hate to see someone talking on the cell phone when they are driving. It makes me so mad to think that they could cause me to be in an accident because of that damn cell phone. I did not read the article about children and cell phones, but I do not believe children should have one. I like your article. The pictures were really horrifying to look at. This story is very informative. I wish the USA would not allow the use of cell phones while driving.

Hi Tammy

Great Hub...must admit I have been guilty in the past, not for texting but for talking on the cell. New law in British Columbia now...no communication devices allowed while driving....think the fine is around $200. I think we now also have the strongest drinking and driving penalties too which is great. Hope to get to more of your hubs...My best, Sheryl

I guess there are still a lot of inconsiderate drivers even if there are laws about using the cellphone. Sometimes if bad things happen in life, it can also be attributed to people’s irresponsibility.

This hub is a good reminder to all drivers to drive safely before we’ll regret it at the end. The pictures you posted is an eye-opener of what possible tragedy can happen to anybody, and that anybody can be you, me or our loved ones. This is a good way to campaign against using cellphone or being drunk while driving. Thumbs up!

Hi there Tammy. Those photos you shared speak a thousand words. How sad!

Here in the state of Washington it is illegal to talk and text on your cellphone, but amazingly I still see people doing this while driving! Why?

That anyone would think that a phone call or text not of an emergency nature is so important that it simply cannot be ignored for several minutes is absurd.

And, these people vote too.
