DID APPLE MESS UP THE APPLE IPAD?

Yes, everyone loves the iPad 2 and iPad 3, it seems. Apple are known for making smart decisions and it's is not often that Apple gets it wrong. They makes the iPod, the iPhone, the beautiful iMac, and now the iPad. And it is responsible for iTunes - the amazing beast that has tamed the music-buying world, and which became the world's no.1 music site on the web. So when Apple decide on a new change that will affect us all, it should be a good change, right? It should be something that will make us happier and more productive. No, not the patent wars it declared on other firms. It seems that Apple has now taken excessive measures with the iPad - and it needs addressing.

Apple makes its own Operating systems, it's own software, and its own processor (for the new iPad). Apple are happy to sell the content and other people's Apps through its App store and it makes a tidy 30% profit on content sold through the store - and it makes very decent profits on content sold via iTunes. Nothing wrong there.

Remember that the Apps are not available anywhere else, unless you make and sell your own Apps through your own site or store. Apple is now selling advertisements that will run inside the Apps store, and it will keep 40% of that revenue for itself. So Apple is bucking the "everything is free" philosophy we get on the internet a lot. Apple already won't allow Adobe flash (and so flash advertisements) on the Apple iPad. During the release of the iPad, the great Steve Jobs could not get it to display any Flash Animation whatsoever. The Blog and articles in PC World magazine caught the mistake immediately.

So now, a lot of the Youtube videos I look at - can't be viewed on the iPad 2. We could be seeing Apple move away from you being able to use a browser eventually when it comes to some iPad usage. Many websites use Flash technology to enhance web content. It is the web designer's best friend in some cases. Now Apple is introducing the iAd, a new way of advertising things on its own version of the web, on the iPad. So reading between the lines as one does - as a web content creator - that means other networks will not be able to follow the effectiveness of the Apple ad system and measure how successful it is, despite having to pay towards it, unlike the Google way, which freely allows anyone to follow the effectiveness of how PPC and Google Adsense and Adwords works on its systems. You do that through Google Analytics, a free system kindly provided by Google. What are we seeing here? A change on how things are done? Could this become widespread? It would make Google's system and way of doing things all but useless on the Mac. Do we all want that? Do we think it is a good idea?

The iPad that promises so much...
The iPad that promises so much...

Personally I can deal with this on my Apple iPhone. Anyone who doesn't like the surplus of ads can just get another kind of Mobile phone like the HTC Hero or Android equivalent (Android comes courtesy of Google) - but what of the new iPad? The apparent laptop replacement? We are seeing a serious divergence away from how other companies usually display ad content. It seems Apple have decided to do something very different...

Is Apple right to do this? Are Apple shooting themselves in the foot with this development? Are Apple exercising just too much control over the content on the Apple Ipad? Is Apple about to seriously cheese off a lot of computer consumers and advertisers and web content creators out there? Remember, this new change means some web content will simply cease to appear correctly on the Apple iPad. Does Apple's argument about Flash being unstable and unreliable hold up? That's what prompted this Hub. People need to know, so they can choose whether to stay with Apple and its iPad - or perhaps choose something else.

It shows the New York Times website, but the flash ads don't show or display...nor will any flash ads.
It shows the New York Times website, but the flash ads don't show or display...nor will any flash ads.

I am normally a big fan of Apple in oh so many ways, even if I cannot watch Flash video content on my iPhone, while others can. But I am not sure what this new change means for people like me and anyone using the Apple products. It has killed my appetite for ever getting an Apple iPad anyway. We need clarification. And I am not sure if Apple has done a necessarily good thing here. Could it be a glitch? Will Apple fix this problem? Or am I and a lot of other people about to become serious Android followers, and end up using some of the many Android Tablet PC's. Time will tell.

Wow, Cassy. So much for buying one of these, then. You just killed a dream buy I had planned. Does it mean also that hub pages ads if they are flash based won't display. It seems so counter-logical to the normally smart things that Apple are known for. What about some Google ads that are flash based or other advertising firms on the web? And what does the company that created Flash, Adobe think of all of this? Someone should ask them. I hope Apple don't do this on the Apple Macbooks. I will change my Safari browser to another one if they do.

All people have to do in regard to web content is display a massage stating that "...some flash content on this page won't display on an iPad." I read the PC World article. There's a very good video on it, which states the iPad can display anything. Well, we know now it won't display flash, so that's a lie. All in all, this is a wake up call, Cheeky Girl. Well done. I am impressed as always. :) XXX

Hello my dear Cathy! Well, I have done some digging and apparently Apple want people to start using their new intended advert system called "iAds" that they are rolling out, and having an iPad that won't show flash ads but will show iAds is their logic, it seems. But it's a terrible big gamble. It worked on iTunes with the iPod and the AAC music format too. They are trying to repeat this here with the iPad and iAds! Wow! Thankfully I do mention this in the hub. It pays to do your research! By the way, the browser message is a nice touch there! That might work! XOX

Hi ya Cheeky Girl ! In an age where we are inundated with hi tech toys and crap. I can say with the upmost assurance I have no intention of getting an IPad. I am trying to make an effort to get away from the oversaturation of electronic media we are getting buried in.But like you I do love ITunes ! And I just wanted to come by and say Hi anyway. :)

Hello Tony: It's always good to get your comments here. Actually, some gadgets I like. I love mucking about with bits and bobs! LOL! Especially mobile phones. So ok, I might need to get a life! Heh! Anyway - I have been put off by the latest iPad news, that it can't show flash. Do you realize how much content on Youtube is Flash? I am even planning a flash-enabled website, or was till I read about the damn iPad not able to display stuff. It means that most online newspapers won't display properly on the iPad either. And many ads won't appear at all. Someone should tell Facebook and Myspace - they'll be just thrilled to hear that.

I agree about people being buried in high tech media, my view on that is like my view on tax laws - stay one step ahead. Heh! But as a web content creator / Hubber / blogger - I am bound to have to stay ahead of the game in order to get a good rating.

Happily I do love iTunes! And cheers! It's nice to see you as always! Hope you are well! : )

I'm actually a huge Apple fan, but sometimes I think they're going overboard with this 'i cult' as I call it. Imagine, having their own ads now...! it's almost as if no other technology is good enough for apple users anymore, and I wonder if I'll ever give into this fad. Anyway, excellent hub as always and keep up the good work! take care, x

Hello myownworld: Thanks for the comments! Glad you like the Apple in general as do I. Apple are trying to promote their iAds and other related technologies. Although I didn't add it to the hub, Apple are planning their own Apple search engine too, and seem to want less dependence on Google. That could affect the ratings game of the future. That's another hub for another time, I think! Apple want all the revenues going into them, not others. I can understand that, but as long as people like us don't end up worse off. I love the sexy Apple Macbook and Imac. Cheers for the nice comments, MOW. You're a star! You take care too! X

Thanks, Cheeky, for doing the research so I could learn about Apple's latest foray into owning the world. Now I'm going to postpone the purchase of an iPad which I had been considering.

Hello drbj: Apple need to wake up and smell the coffee. Perhaps they will come to their senses. I know a website designer who is really annoyed by the Ipad's limitations. Showing commercial content for this device will be constrained to some extent. As for Apple owning the world, that is never going to happen. A little competition is healthy I think! Thanks for the interesting comments!

Cheeky Girl, thanks for the informative hub. I don't want to be without Flash. I think you may have inspired me to do a new hub... maybe I will entitle it "Is Apple the new Big Brother???" (shades of their 1984 ad campaign and all that, what?) (hee hee)

As a big Apple fan. I hate the Android, trust me it's difficult to use and glitchy. I seriously prefer to not have to rely on a phone that only works half the time. Flash works on all other Apple products flash has never been on the iPhone so it doesn't surprise me that it isn't on the iPad, since it is just a larger version of the iPhone. I don't think the iPad was made to take over for the laptop. It's a great little gadget that is bigger than the iPhone and therefore easier to read text and play games. I purchased one of those mini laptops and I was really disappointed with it. I really prefer safari and it's much faster and user friendly. Plus no viruses. Ever got a virus on a PC?...What a pain in the you-know-what.

Excellent hub and thanks for the update. I guess you can tell I really love Apple. I think that competition will makes for more improvements in other products. Apple is a bit pricy.

Hello prasetio30: thank you for the comment. Apple are really coming on in leaps and bounds with most of their new products you mention here. I am a fan of them too, but if they bring flash back to the iPad, then I will buy one.

Hy watcher by night: hey, that’s a good title for the Apple hub! I am so jealous! But happy that I gave the inspiration. Apple are usually very savvy and smart. Dumping flash in favour of their own iAds is a weird and funny thing to do. I am amazed how many people are talking about the iPad thing over here now, it’s mentioned in a few magazines here. I don’t want to be without flash either. Thanks for that.

Hello Tammy: always a joy to get your comments here, moi friend! Android glitch? Wow, I tried it out on the HTC Hero mobile phone and it blew me away! I even wrote a hub about it! Maybe it's with other devices that the glitches are happening?! Yes, I don’t see flash on my iPhone either, although some apps have ads in them! How curious! And yes, I can tell that you and many other folks here love the Apple brand and goodies they make! They have style in abundance! But yes, rather pricey! Grrh! As for viruses, we have a Macbook and a windows laptop here and the Mac has never caught a virus to our knowledge. The Windows machine caught a few, so it’s armed with plenty of anti-virus and malware finding software. Safari is a good browser, and I love the page viewer that resembles iTunes Album covers viewer. Dang – I am glad I did this hub now! Cheers!

Hello Katie: Good to get your views on Apple here. Yes, there is a cult thing about the Apple brand. More people seem loyal to Apple than most others out there. I can see the appeal. I just don’t see flash in their iPads! No flash, no ads, no youtube videos, no flash webpages loading up. Apple should have flash put on the iPads, it would make me very happy. Just like they already have done with their other Macintosh products as Tammy rightfully said. And I appreciate the words of encouragement here too! Thanks to you also! Peace and Happiness, Katie! : )

I won't be purchasing the iPad. It's crap. Apple will never allow Adobe Flash on any product because it causes them to lose control; they won't be the one in control anymore.

Hello Art! Great to see my TattoGuy here! I am honestly surprised you haven't heard of the iPad. Gosh, that's surprising! Anyway it is rather famous! I love my iPod too! Life in the gym would be so quiet and boring without it! A girl's other best friend! Heh! I am glad you like the hubs! You know me, I like to vary the subjects a wee bit! Thank you for the kind comments, moi friend! Much appreciated! : ) Mwah! XOX

Hello Dave353: Yes, they do leave stuff out of the first version - I was stung by the first iPhone and had to wait a while for the latest new one "3Gs". I am happy with it for now. The second version is always better. That's a very good tip! Cheers!

Hy jaymz: I guess you are disgusted by Apple leaving out flash from the iPad. I feel the same way. But hopefully Apple will see the error of their ways and add flash to a future or next version of the iPad. Its amazing how many online newspapers cannot be fully viewed on the iPad cos of the omission of flash technology from it. It is a definite boo boo. I understand the control thing. There can be too much control too, and that's a drawback here. Thanks for the comments!

Hi Cheeky, so glad to read your hub today as I am such a fan, but you are so smart about all this stuff and I am old and out of touch. But, I love your hub and will rate it up. Love you girlfriend, thumbs up

Cheeky Girl profile image

Cheeky Girl 6 years ago from UK and Nerujenia Author

Hello Darlene: aw, thank you for the lovely comments. Hey, come on- you are not that old. You have a few more dances left in ya! LOL! This computer stuff can be overwhelming, it is true. But it is something that as Hub Page writers, we have to know a little bit of it. And the little we learn along the way can be good or useful. Well, that's the theory, I guess.

The iPad is simply a touchscreen device that lets you do things that a laptop can do or a mobile phone like the iPhone can do. It uses most of the technology on the iPhone, including the software Applications or "Apps" as they are now called. It is becoming very popular.

But a glaring omission was found in it as it can't display certain kinds of graphics called flash. So parts of what it shows appears missing or blank or looks wrong. So it begs the question - Did Apple mess up the Apple iPad? Apple don't usually get it this wrong normally. It needs fixing or modification, otherwise people will go looking for their money back. That is the reason I wrote the hub! Thanks for the thumbs up! Love you too, Darlene.

Apple makes good products, but to exclude flash because they don't think it is a good code was just plain ignorant. Everyone accepts that flash is weak, but for now it is what it is and not having it only hurts your device.

I understand the flaws and disadvantages of the ipad but I still want one! I'm not much of an apple fan either, I use an ipod and thats really it. Maybe it's all the marketing and hype they've created but either way I still want one! I'll try and hold off on buying one. Thanks for the info

Cheeky Girl profile image

Cheeky Girl 6 years ago from UK and Nerujenia Author

Hello SunCapsule: I agree, and I hope Apple will add flash functionality to this product. I have several friends who own one and I am in some ways envious, but also noticing glaring problems on some websites. Myspace suffers, as do many other web pages. I found well known media and TV station Web pages didn't load up on it as some flash content meant there were empty awkward gaps on the pages. If someone started pinning up stills of pages like that somewhere, there'd be murder! Heh! But the cat is out of the bag now. Yes, not having flash does hurt the device. One friend even suggested to me that theoretically the absence of flash could even harm my ratings as some people using iPads would not see flash content on pages I have created and so would affect my rating accordingly. Drop in rating means drop in other things like Adsense payments and web content income. Hoo boy! What were Apple thinking? Thanks for this!

Hello Maita: Oh it is bouncing back alright. I have read it in 6 different magazines now and even in Hub Pages reviews of the iPad, Hubbers mention the absence of flash. Having actually tried to see pages on the iPad with my own eyes, I can sadly confirm this. Reluctantly I will stick with my trusty laptop. Oh well. Thank you for the comments, moi friend. Lots of hugs right back to you! You're a star! : )

Hello James L: the iPod is awesome, no doubt. The iPad is a different story. Don't let me influence your decision, if that's what it comes down to. Free will and all that. I want people to know that what it lacks can cause a backlash later on perhaps, unless Apple fix the missing flash thing on what ought to be an other wise good product. Having no flash on the web is bad for business and ratings and our ability to generate a bit of income, James. That is how I see the iPad. Any other pc or laptop on the planet does the job just fine, with no problems. Not even a problem on a sub-£200 netbook on Linux! It's bizarre. They will just have to put flash on the iPad, folks. No other way out of it. Anyway, it is sure getting some reaction here! Thanks again - take care, James.

I can't understand why people are paying double for a kind of netbook that only runs software from the App store, doesn't run flash, doesn't have ports. Oh and has no keyboard on it. It looks nice. Apple claim they are outselling all other Apple products. I think a netbook is better.

While I will admit that the Ipad is an intriguing new gadget. Personally, thinking it will be a while before all the glitches will be fixed. For this reason, I've never liked the idea of being the first to have a new gadget toy. Because those people have paid their good money only to become the company's 'free-testers' that get to deal with all that's wrong with the product.

It will be interesting to see how they handle the Flash problem, maybe there's going to be and I-Flash that is bigger and better than Adobe??? Hhhhhmmmmm, thanks so much for writing this article. Thumbs up!:)

Cassy great discussion on flash and iAds. Steve Jobs has made it clear he doesn't want Flash - I remember at the iPhone 4.0 launch this was brought up. I did a hub back then at it and his big issue was download speed etc. Interestingly they have just allowed the opera browser so that helps that. There are a few big gambles here with the media paywalls and the iAds with them another, However there maybe more than this, claw back a bit from Adobe , Microsoft and Google perhaps. They have sold 2 million iPads already so they are fairly emboldened.

Cheeky Girl profile image

Cheeky Girl 6 years ago from UK and Nerujenia Author

Hy Billyaustindillon: thanks for this, moi friend! Yes, Mr Jobs won't be putting Flash on the iPhone or iPad any time soon. Being a web content creator and loving flash (and Google and Amazon ads) as I do (for monetizing web page - reasons) - it is apparent that Apple are going in a different direction. If the Opera Browser works on the iPad, then that should show Flash. I wasn't aware of that! Wow, that would be great! I understand the clawback from the competition. I don't like that to be affecting me or you or any other end user however. I see no point in my choices being limited as to what content I can choose to watch. Yes, they are now The Number One Tech company in the world, now ahead of Microsoft! That is damned impressive! I think the likes of OpenOffice free office software and other Open Source ware has helped dent the profits of Microsoft as well. Thanks for the input here! Food for thought indeed! Have a great weekend!

We here in Europe have just got to bask in the warm glow of the hype and having played with the i-Pad, I must say, the Jury is still out. It's certainly not a netbook, but what is it? A clipboard? I don't care about Flash videos, but I do care about spending a $1000 on something that looks and functions like a drinks tray.

What I Jobbie needs to do, is make an i-Pad sized machine, with a fold out clamshell keyboard... I'm talking about an APPLE NETBOOK!!!!

A netbook with the style of the i-Pad would be a killer machine. Small, stylish and powerfull. My spec would also have an SDHC/ProDuo reader and, freekin USB ports!!! So I can connect a Broadband Dongle of MY choice - not use the freakishly expensive monopoly tie-in contracts that always come with Apple toys.

Apple... stop talking AT your clients and start listening TO them....... what was that? You can't hear us because we're holding our G4 i-Phones in the wrong hand...

Have a cheeky day :-)

It runs iPhone Apps at double pixellated screen size, and has a lot of ready made applications available for it. But the lack of Flash support bugs me, since it is ubiquitous on the net. Thankfully the Opera Mini Browser comes to the rescue there. The built-in internet that comes bundled with the iPad certainly favours the broadband network more than customers in terms of choice.

We use a Macbook and a Windows laptop here. The windows system has more expandability than the Mac. But the software with a Mac is fantastic. I really don't mind paying for it.

I can add any network to the windows machine. And far more peripherals to it than are available for the Apple Macbook, such as printers and scanners. I am not here to bash the Apple people. I just wish the iPad did more than just look amazing and be very expensive! A cheap netbook can do more than the iPad.

Cheers! And thanks for the comments.

I get the same feeling. Apple is very keen for people to provide feedback, yet they're not so keen to fix many of their very few major bugs. I have used macs for the last 5 years and haven't really looked back. Haven't had OS troubles yet, but a few repairs all under warranty and overall am satisfied.

One issue with the macs seems to be that safari limits their search to Google, Yahoo or Bing. Sometimes I'd like to use others like Clusty, etc for certain types of things! I think Apple will need lots of complaints before they fix any issue with Flash on the iPad, though! Great to see something posted about bugs from apple, because occasionally one WILL 'bug' me!

Hello infonolan: yes, the Apple brand is renowned for reliability. The solution to Safari is "Opera",a competing browser that is Flash-friendly, and should allow other search engines okay. As for the complaints, aw, I am just keeping them on their toes! Heh! It pays never to be too complacent. Thanks for the interesting comments here. : )
