Dell Is Transforming Itself

Dell India Has Grown In the Last Decade

Michael Dell is the Chairman and CEO of Dell. He is trying to make Dell as a services powerhouse. Services sector is dominated by established players in a challenging environment. In 2011, Dell roped in Suresh Vaswani as the Chairman of Dell India. Suresh Vaswani was earlier working as CEO in Wipro. From the scratch a decade back, Dell India’s business has grown to $1.5 billion today. It has a manufacturing facility in Chennai spread over 50 acres. Dell exports to Middle East from this facility. Dell has realised that the business cannot be expanded sizeably by focusing only on PCs. On the other hand, focusing on hardware that includes data centre and security will make the market big. An awareness of the market segmentation is a must to expand the business. For example smartphones cannot replace laptops and vice versa as the purpose of using them are quite different.

Dell Lost the Tamil Nadu Government Order

Dell was involved in an insider trading scandal in USA. A criminal club of seven people have been charged in $62 million in the insider trading deal. Dell is targeting to step up its IT services revenue to a great deal in future. Dell is scouting for acquisition of a mid sized tech company in India for acquisition. Dell is planning to expand its operations in Silicon Valley. Dell lost out on Tamil Nadu government laptop orders. Tamil Nadu government wanted to distribute 68 lakh laptops to school students free of cost. Leno, Acer and HCL Infosystems bagged the order and Dell lost out. For procuring government orders, quality of products and services alone is not enough. The company also needs to grease the palm of the government authorities to win contracts. Probably Dell did not do this and lost out.

Future Lies In IT Solutions

Dell India launched recently its XPS 13 Ultrabook with a price of around Rs.80000. It contains enterprise-ready features useful for the professionals. From a products or services company, Dell is planning to become the provider of IT solutions. That is where its future lies as it is a tech-savvy company. In the last six years, Dell acquired 21 firms and gained knowledge in solutions and infrastructure.
