CD means Compact Disc and DVD means Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc. The media type of both CD and DVD are optical disk.
The storage capacity of CD is less than one Gigabytes but the storage size of DVD is greater than 4 Gigabytes (single layer DVD). Typical CD storage size is 700 MB and typical DVD size is about 4.7GB. So, a DVD disk has 6 times larger disk space than a CD disk.
Both the CD and DVD are used to store data like hard drive, SD card or floppy disk. CDs are the best choice for music. A typical CD may have 80 minutes audio. But the DVDs are the best for movies. Generally, all the movies of any DVD are very nice to enjoy.
There are also dual layer DVD which capacity is 8.5GB. But to burn this type of DVD, one dual-layer burner is required.
CD can be run into CD or DVD ROM or RAM. But DVD can only run in DVD ROM or RAM. All the CD and DVD usually run all types of DVD player. But DVD can't run in any type of CD player.
