Electromagnetic Locks: Product Comparison

There are many companies that make electromagnetic locks, otherwise known as maglocks or magnets. In this article I will detail my experience with a few popular models.

This article does not deal with special function electromagnetic locks, such as self contained delayed egress magnets or magnets with integral passive infrared detectors, but compares a few basic mag locks with comparable features.

Dynalock 2011
Dynalock 2011

Dynalock

  • Model: 2011
  • Standard Finish: Aluminum
  • Holding Force: 1200 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 1-1/2"D x 2-3/4"H x 11"L
  • Voltage: 12/24 volts AC/DC field selectable
  • Current draw: 420mA at 12 volts, 210mA at 24 volts
  • Lifetime Warrantee

A good, reliable basic mag, reasonably priced. 1200 lbs. is considered minimum holding force required for security. Plates and brackets available at extra charge to ease installation. Integral bond sensor and door position switches available at extra charge. The onboard rectifier can be a real time saver.

Dynalock 3000
Dynalock 3000

Model 3000

  • Standard Finish: Aluminum
  • Holding Force: 1500 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 1-1/2"D x 2-3/4"H x 11"L
  • Voltage: 12/24 volts AC/DC field selectable
  • Current draw: 420mA at 12 volts, 210mA at 24 volts
  • Lifetime Warrantee

Another good, reliable basic mag, reasonably priced. 1500 lb. holding force is industry standard for security. "Quick-track" mounting gets mixed reviews as in some installations there is not adequate room to slide the mag on from the side. Plates and brackets available at extra charge to ease installation. Integral bond sensor and door position switches available at extra charge. Once again, the onboard rectifier can be a real time saver.

Model 2268-10

  • Standard Finish: Aluminum
  • Holding Force: 1200 lbs.
  • Dimensions 2-3/16"D x 2"H x 14"L
  • Voltage: 12 / 24VDC Field Selectable
  • Current draw: 680mA at 12VDC, 350mA at 24VDC
  • Lifetime Warrantee

This mag is of note because it is a drop in replacement for the discontinued Locknetics 268-10, a very important characteristic if you need to replace that particular mag with its unique footprint. The Dynalock 2268-10 is available with all the usual accessories and features. It does not, however, have an on-board rectifier so it must be supplied with DC voltatge.

Securitron M82
Securitron M82

Securitron

Model M82B

  • Standard Finish: Satin Stainless Steel
  • Holding Force: 1800 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 1-3/4" D x 3" H x 12" L
  • Voltage: 12VDC or 24VDC Field Selectable
  • Current Draw: 350mA at 12VDC, 175mA at 24VDC
  • Lifetime Warrantee

Superior holding force. Sealed stainless steel magnetic lock can be difficult to install, since it has no mounting plate and weighs about 16 lbs. I strongly recommend the installation template tool available from Securitron. Bond sensor standard, door position switch available. Wide variety of brackets and plates available to ease installation.

Securitron M62
Securitron M62

Model M62

  • Standard Finish: Satin Stainless Steel
  • Holding Force: 1200 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 1-3/4" D x 3" H x 8" L
  • Voltage: 12VDC or 24VDC Field Selectable
  • Current Draw: 250mA at 12VDC, 125mA at 24VDC
  • Lifetime Warrantee

An industry standard. Minimum holding force for security purposes. Seales stainless steel magnetic lock can be difficult to install without Securitron template tool. Bond sensor and door position monitor switches available. Wide variety of brackets and plates available to ease installation.

Securitron M32
Securitron M32

Model M32

  • Standard Finish: Satin Stainless Steel
  • Holding Force: 600 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 1-5/8" D x 1-7/8" H x 8" L
  • Voltage: 12VDC or 24VDC Field Selectable
  • Current Draw: 300mA at 12VDC, 150mA at 24VDC
  • Lifetime Warrantee

Traffic control magnetic lock. Available with bond sensor, door position switch, and a variety of brackets and plates to ease installation.

Securitron MM15
Securitron MM15

Securitron MM15

  • Standard Finish: Satin Stainless Steel
  • Holding Force: 4000 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 2-3/4" D x 1-7/8" H x 6" L
  • Voltage: 12 or 24V AC/DC Field Selectable
  • Current Draw: 130mA at 12VDC, 250mA at 24VDC
  • Lifetime Warrantee

One of the most powerful holding force magnets on the market. Small size makes it easy to use with other hardware on the door, such as vertical rod exit devices and/or parallel arm door closers . Monitor switches can be added and plates and brackets are available to simplify installation. Since this unit gets its holding force from locking lugs on either side of the armature, some people have expressed concern about alignment problems over time, but this has not been my experience.

Wow, Tom. Lots of research here! This is one for the archives, when I need the information. Good job.

Thank you, Storytellersrus.

It's so funny (as in peculiar), it is these really narrow niche hubs of mine that get the traffic as opposed to the political or philosophical stuff I also write.
