The future is full of computers. Working, writing and possibly living on line are all precursors to what we do now.

Computers for no money down or payment plans are unusual in this day and age, but certainly exist

Computers are a way of life in our modern technological age. Schools have them, most jobs need them and basically everywhere we look there is one to be found to do nearly anything imaginable. The importance of having it readily at hand and knowing how to use it to enhance life is immeasurable on so many levels.

Everyone does not have one at the ready

Countless people take for granted everyone has a computer. For instance, in countless communities in order to look for employment or place to live not having one is crippling. Applications, instructions, guidelines, phone numbers and addresses are all at the ready. Things like phone books and paper resumes are a thing of the past.

The next generation uses a tool

Modern technology plays a major role in the educational system and access to this tool is a necessity to get school work or assignments done. Historically when these were first introduced to this arena it was at higher levels of education, but now first and second graders are adapt at usage.

What happens to the kids attending school without one or able to get one handily to use to get the work done? Having a free computer is a life saver and a way to make the life of a child better and certainly easier to live. Education is power and the quantity and quality gained with this device has become enormous.

Benefits for those in need

Veterans need them to apply for benefits as well as low income folks living on food stamp assistance or medicaid. Even Medicare is tied to the computer system in lots of cities or towns where a physical building or presence is no longer available for help.

Income verification from governmental sources is commonly discovered on a website and not through snail mail. It not only gets the job done faster, but certainly less costly.

Libraries are a resource

There are a lot of individuals and families without one because they cannot afford it. Financially there are other more pressing needs than computers or internet access. One of the largest public locations to open it's doors to these people have been public libraries.

Places such as these let members of the community use this resource without charge, but not everyone lives where this is a possibility. Countless are even out of reach of this plan of action. This resource is limited even where available and most have commented an inability to meet the needs of municipalities which fund them There are more people in need than these buildings are capable of supplying.

With supply more than demand there are restrictions or guidelines in place to make sharing more equal among patrons. As long as a user is a card holding member there is permission to use one if the rules are followed.

Time allotment is the most important rule. Computers are expensive for libraries as well and with more people than space in front of one available, restrictions on how long a member is able to use one in a day is important. Even this falls way short of what is needed.

There are waiting lists every day and tons of folks turned away because the need of computer users is too great to meet the supply. Additionally, with access for only members of the library anyone else is out of luck. There are some individuals unable to obtain even a simple library card needed or transportation to get to a building with these on hand.

Employment Centers

With the unemployment rate at nearly 10% in most communities, lots of employment opportunity places offer usage free of charge to help job seekers. Most are automated via phone call or of course, internet.

The unemployment process is entirely centered on computer use. One is needed to enroll, look for work and more. A live person is not an option. Formerly offices for walk ins were abundant but have since closed or are few and far between even the largest cities and communities around the nation.

Organizations set up to help with the unemployment crisis previously working with people giving free computer use cannot assist those same folks that need these devices with the resources on hand. The numbers are staggering and continue to grow.

These are folks working diligently to come up with a solution which offers the most for the least amount of monies. Individuals understand the real issue at hand and making an attempt to do something positive about it. They are helping get these individuals a free one when possible.

AJM, did you get a chance to review https://www.freecycle.org/ this is a wonderful resource where lots of people have had success. there are also those folks working thru churches and similar organizations.

the competition is tough and schools make it impossible for kids to work without the internet or a computer. based on the number of kids without one this is something lots of school districts should look into. maybe parent organizations and even those outside of them need to put pressure on districts to include them as part of the supplies given to kids by the school.

remember the saying to call your congressman? do it. get them involved by phone call or letter. there are sources they have not readily available to the rest of us.

Hope this is of some assistance for you and your granddaughter.

In our society computers are needed to run everyday life activities. They are used for pharmacy prescriptions, school, applying for jobs, etc. Online classes is another category to add to the list.

Resources mentioned here are for any sort of use and online education is part of that list.

Countless universities give a laptop for online courses as part of the overall tuition cost. ie. ICDC College.

This is an online college /university with degrees in a number of fields. Enrolled students get a free laptop as part of the overall cost for education. Search around for other similar opportunities. They do exist.
