We all spend many hours on our computers doing research, getting in touch with friends, editing images, uploading images from our digital cameras, copying and pasting text from different documents, emailing, etc. Many times we wish we could save time doing these tasks which just have to be done. There is good news for those who want to work more efficiently.

There are many applications for both Apple and Windows operating systems to save time doing these very tasks.

Removing Formatting from Text

Whether you are a student, a teacher, an employee, a boss, a homemaker or a grandparent if you are reading this then you must definitely use the computer for many reasons. A major portion of computer usage requires copying and pasting text. Especially when you are browsing for information on Google or Wikipedia and you find something useful, you would like to copy the information and paste it in a file on your computer. But when you do this, the computer retains all the formatting, the tables, the font colors, the hyperlinks and whatever else which you don't need at this particular instance. You have to then spend time reformatting or removing all the formatting from the text to make it readable. All this takes a lot of time.

There is a shorter method. One idea is to copy the text and paste it into a simple text editor like the TextEdit or TextWrangler in Mac or the Notepad in Windows. And then to copy it in the required file or email. However, this too requires a couple of steps.

FormatMatch (Mac) and Pure Text (Windows)

There is an even quicker way to do it. There are a couple of free applications available for people who use either Mac or Windows operating systems. One of them which I have found very useful is called FormatMatch. When the application is on it sits on the menu bar on the top and whenever text is copied and pasted it without the original formatting. I have found this very useful. I turn it on whenever I am doing research for presentations and want to format the text in my own way in a presentation software like PowerPoint or Open Office. It is also helpful when copying text from a PDF document into a word processing software.

FormatMatch 1.3 is Free and is available for Mac OS X 10.6. It can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

For those who use Windows there is a free application called PureText 2.0. It adds a new Windows hot-key (default is Windows+V) and does the same action as CTRL+V or Paste in the application you choose. You can download from the PureText website.

Converting Diverse Image Formats

Many of us use Social Networking sites like Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. We post photographs of important events in our lives. Some of us even build our own websites or write blogs regularly. An image is equal to a thousand words as we all know and we wish it was easy to edit and format images. We usually use the default image editor on our computers and convert JPEG to PNG or GIF. Or we sometimes wish we could change a file in PDF to a JPEG image to upload on Facebook or the vice versa. Graphic designers would use Adobe Photoshop to perform these conversions. However, these actions take a lot of time.

By using some really amazing applications like ImageConvert (Mac) and Easy Image Converter (Windows) we can do it in seconds. Both these applications allow you to batch convert images into a single format.

ImageConvert (Mac) and Easy Graphic Converter (Windows)

ImageConvert (Mac)

I often use the ImageConvert app to convert between image formats. I find it especially useful when converting from JPG to PDF or vice versa. It is very easy to use.

  1. Drag the image file (GIF or TIFF) or PDF into the ImageConvert window and set preferences to convert the files to JPEG. And voila! in seconds it is done. There is no need to go into a photo editing software to do it.
  2. ImageConvert saves the JPEG files in a specified folder after converting them.

The same can be done to convert a PNG to JPEG or any other file format. It should be remembered that the options available are according to settings specified by the user on his or her own computer.

ImageConvert can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

Easy Graphic Converter (Windows)

This software is quite easy to use as the name suggests. It has more features than the ImageConvert application. With this you can also create thumbnails of the images. This is a simple tool to convert images between formats for different purposes. It runs on Windows 95 up to Windows ME Operating Systems.

I have found the image convert application useful when I had to share a PDF poster on Facebook. I was able to easily convert the PDF into JPEG and post it on the event I had created.
