iCookbook

This recipe app by Bewise is the best We've yet seen for the Modern-UI style. Along with over 200,000 recipes, we’re also impressed by its food photography. In fact, we’re a bit too impressed with it, as it keeps making us rather hungry. Time has been taken to make sure it’s useful for following recipes and everything is presented in a nice large font.

Never miss your train home again

Sky News

One of the finest news apps available for the Windows 8 interface, Sky News has gone for a picture-led layout. The top stories greet you as you enter the app and you can scroll right to see available videos and categories. UK News, World News, Business, Politics, Showbiz and Sport are the main ones, though there’s another called Strange for those quirky stories you might have missed. Clicking into a story shows you the text in a nice readable font that works well whether you have a touchscreen device or are just reading on a desktop PC. You can tap or click the right or left of the screen to switch between stories, so if you’re using a tablet you can use your thumbs to tap through all the stories in the app. It’s a really nice implementation for Windows 8.
