Harman Kardon GLA-55 review

Harman Kardon has finally decided to propose its GLA-55 diamond-shaped speakers. These speakers are marketed after a two years wait since the submission of the first prototype.
The cause of the delay? The difficulty of implementation: Harman Kardon officials wanted to create a single transparent piece. It was not possible and finally, the GLA-55 now consists of two, yet finely assembled entities - an eye-catching design with advanced audio technology.

It looks like an ice sculpture but with a warm touch, and is pleasant despite the angles. A version of the GLA-55 even offer chrome accents. The Harman Kardon GLA-55 connects to an audio player or another source like a computer, for example.

The GLA-55 Specs

The GLA-55 is probably the best 2.0 speaker system on the market. (The 2.0 configuration allows speaker systems without subwoofers.)

  • The speakers are equipped with tuned port technology, a bent tube which ends in a vent.
  • The Atlas AL and CMMD transducers can provide an accurate response at high frequencies and extend to lower frequencies. The bass is powerful and accurate, though for more bass response, a subwoofer output is provided where it is possible to connect a large number of independent subwoofers.
  • It also has a powerful bi-amplified 100W digital amplifier coupled to a DSP (digital signal processing) equalizer to provide the power required for the transducers. The system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich and complete sound environment.
  • The Slipstream port system design minimizes air noises while providing very low distortion. The sound is compressed using a Harman Kardon proprietary technology (OCT - Optimized Compression Technology) and offers, according to the manufacturer, a crisp and clear (...crystalline? ha!) sound even at high volume.

The GLA-55 speakers measure 5.5 × 5.5 × 10.5 inches (140 × 140 × 270 mm), and delivers 112 watts of power.
