How To Use Flip Ultra HD Video Recorder
Video Recording Made Simple - Flip Ultra HD
The Flip Ultra/HD and Flip Mino Video recorders are very easy to use, no technological know how needed.
The software loads straight from the camera through its USB to allow you to plug and play.
The Flip Ultra has a carry strap and fits neatly into your hand.
It is one of the most convenient point and click video cameras available today and best of all, it is competitively priced.
I got my Flip Ultra/HD last Christmas and I have used it extensively to create both movies and photographs for online articles. As well as recording video, it allows you to use still video clips to create photographs which can then be saved as jpgs for use in other programmes.
Flip Ultra - Specifications
- 720pixels camera
- 30 frames per second
- 8 Gb Storage on camera unit
- Compact, lightweight and has crisp resolution.
- Colours are particularly vibrant and sound quality is fine for such a small camera.
What Flip Ultra/Ultra HD does not have is great stability. It is fine if you are using a tripod but let's face it, most of the time you are going to be holding it in your hand so there will be some juddering and unsteadiness.
That said, if you use iMovie 9 or similar video production software, you can improve the juddering to some extent.
Flip Ultra's own production software is fairly unsophisticated but you might argue that you don't buy the Flip Ultra to be a video expert, you buy it because it is a real hands on experience.
It is a video camera for people who want to film on the move and share quickly and the share quickly part is one of its biggest assets.
Flip Ultra is made for social networking - straight from camera to laptop to You Tube, Facebook, Twitter and email all in a matter of minutes.
Flip Ultra For Photos/Snapshots
The Flip Ultra has a USB which flips out from its side. You pull back a lever and it just pops out and you can plug it into your PC and laptop.
It is charged this way which is extremely convenient and you also download your movies directly onto your laptop from the camera.
It is very lightweight too so when it is plugged into the laptop, there is no drag from the USB, it is as steady as a rock.
You can create 2 thinks on a Flip Ultra - movies and snapshots.
Snapshots are basically still shots from your movie.
In the photo below, you can see a screenshot of my movie for the hub I created called How To Make the Ultimate Baked Potato. I filmed the various stages of me preparing the ingredients and cooking the potato.
When I plugged in the Flip Ultra via the USB, it downloaded each separate movie I made.
I then used stills from the movie to make photos for the recipe.
It is a very simple process. The Flip Ultra screen is very user-friendly and offers you 2 choices - do you want to make a movie or a snapshot? In fact, you can do both if you want to.
Click on SNAPSHOT and it is then a case of scanning through the movie until you find the still you like. You can then save it with a unique name and convert it to a format which is usable by HubPages - jpg, png, gif.
Flip Ultra for Movies
Flip Ultra is just fab for making movies - so simple.
You have a small screen on one side of the Flip Ultra camera and a lens on the other. The small screen is no bigger than a viewfinder on a digital camera but this seems to be fine for most people, when you consider that most of us use our mobile phone as a camera.
You just need to have a steady hand. Apologies in advance if you're watching my videos, my hands are pretty steady but my garden lawn isn't!
Once you have made your movie, you plug in your camera via USB and download the film you have just made.
Whilst Flip Ultra lacks any cutting edge editing tools, it does allow you to trim your video but its greatest asset is its choice of 'Movie Magic' or 'Full Length'.
Full Length speaks for itself, if you've created an eight minute epic then you will create a film the same length. However, if you just want the highlights, then Movie Magic' is a great little tool.
You can just get the best bits of your 8 minutes, ideal for sharing via email or Facebook or You Tube.
See to the right my little wander through my garden this afternoon, the full length version (don't worry I don't expect you to watch ALL of it :o) and the Movie Magic shortened version.
This is a great idea I think, a built in editor of sorts.
Flip Ultra Finishing Touches
You will notice from the two videos that I have featured that they both have a titles screen and a credits screen and also some music.
Flip Ultra does this all for you in three easy steps, all on the same page.
If you don't want to use their music, you can use music saved on your computer so I could have had Adele or Cocteau Twins doing my background music - but I took the simple route - Flip Ultra provide you with 5 or 6 full length tunes and all you do is choose the one you want to use.
So the Flip Ultra gets my vote as just about the simplest hand-held video recording device on the market today. It is relatively inexpensive, robust and to film, you press the red button, that's it!
It even has a waterproof cover for those of you of an aquatic bent; so great for taking photos like Clark Little (though I assume he's using something a tad more sophisticated).
I think the Flip Ultra is one of the best Christmas gifts I have ever been bought and it has made my article writing experience even more enjoyable.
By the way, I also use an ipod touch video camera but I don't think Apple's video editing suite is as intuitive and easy to use as the Flip Ultra. If you have time on your hands, ipod is great, if not and it's sharing you're into, it's Flip Ultra every time.
Many thanks for reading.
