Connect Samsung Galaxy S Mobile with Kies on your PC - The MTP Error

I just got my new Samsung Galaxy S and have finally defeated the MTP device driver error and CDC driver error! I am now connected to Kies. I can't wait to start using this beast! It's arguably one of the most powerful smart phones in existence thanks to its 4 inch super AMOLED screen, 1GHz processor with tweaked instruction sets and unrivalled graphics performance. However, it and/or the software PC suite appears to have a major flaw...

Connecting it to my PC through Samsung Kies software is a total pain. A quick google of the issues reveals that I am not the only one. I'm using 64 bit Vista (x64) but I suspect the method I used to get connected may work with 32bit (x86) too. People on message boards seem to be universally complaining about the same thing.

At this point I would like to say, this may not help you. There are a number of different versions of the same phone out there, with different versions of android and thousands if not more pc, mac and other computer setups. Before you deal directly with drivers, have you tried:

1. upgrading to the latest version of Kies.

2. upgrading your version of .net (an MS Windows component) to the latest from the Microsoft website.

3. trying a different usb port. The SGS seems very sensitive to voltage and different usb ports around your computer supply fractionally different voltages.

In short, when I first connected the phone to my PC, I plugged in the Phone to the PC USB port and after twiddling thumbs for a while the PC tells me that the MTP device driver has failed. I assumed this was just going to be a quick issue, updated Kies to the latest version and tried again.

Same result. Next I tried connecting the Phone in USB debugging mode. SUCCESS! Connection established... "Please turn off USB debugging mode, Kies does not support connection in this mode" followed by being swiftly booted by Kies. Not only that but there appeared to be no sign of the phone in Windows either. In debugging mode, you usually see some signs the phone has been connected, even if you can't access the storage.

The next step was to open device manager on the PC. There was the MTP device, sure enough displaying an error. The usual step here is to right click and hit update drivers. This I did and was rewarded by a big fat nothing.

It checked but then told me I was using the latest drivers already. Clearly not, because they weren't working!

Sorting the Issue

The next and final option I used, the one that finally worked and I probably should have gone for right at the start was to manually get the right driver and instruct the device manager where to find said driver and hopefully get the whole mess sorted.

I could've just used the micro SD card to transfer everything, but pulling it out of the phone every time was going to be a major pain, not to mention not good for the card so I was determined to sort the issue.

After a bit of searching, (Google again) I finally found the right driver here:

  • x64 (64bit) version:
  • x86 (32bit) version:
  • This got me a zip file which I scanned with an AV (don't forget to do this!) and then unzipped to a folder I knew the location of (make sure its easy to find).
  • (Update courtesy of Tim) The x86 link gets you an exe file. This can be unpacked/"unzipped with 7zip freeware in exactly the same way as a zip file. The drivers should then work as the x64 does.
  • Navigate to device manager (control panel ->Device Manager or Administrative tools -> computer management -> device manager)
  • Navigate to "portable devices" or "MTP" in device manager, whichever one shows up with the error. There will probably be a little yellow error triangle on your device that has the problem.
  • Right clicking on the faulty MTP device in device manager and choosing "update driver software" gave me the option of searching automatically and browsing my computer manually. Search automatically had already failed so I hit browse my computer for driver software - the manual way*
  • I navigated to the folder I had unzipped the drivers into, ticked include subfolders and hit OK.

This time success! It loaded the drivers and indicated my I9000 (Galaxy S) device was connected... or not.

Note: I realise that it can sometimes be difficult to navigate through device manager to the manual update point. The following may help if manual updating is not immediately obvious:

  • Right click on the MTP device, click properties, navigate to the driver tab on the window that pops up, click update driver, if a window pops up that says "can windows connect to windows update to search for software?" click "no, not this time" and hit next.
  • Then tick "install from a list or specific location",
  • Then tick "search for the best driver in these locations"
  • untick search removable media and tick "include this location in the search"
  • Then hit "browse" and find the folder where you unzipped the drivers you downloaded earlier. Hopefully you will then be able to press "OK" when you have found the right folder although this is very temperamental.
  • When you have done this, hit "next" and the computer should do the rest.

Update courtesy of Alesmine 26/10/10: A thread ( has suggested that the specific driver folder for Samsung phones is the "16_Shrewsbury" folder. If you cannot select the parent folder (i.e. the folder that you unzip the drivers into) try selecting the .inf files within the 16_Shrewsbury folder. There are 5 .inf files and 5 .cat files as well as 2 folders. You may have to select the .inf files one at a time and repeat the procedure for the other 4.

Up popped issue number two. CDC abstract control model drivers missing: load from cd. Well I didn't have a cd and a browse of google gave me nothing, updating this new issue automatically gave me nothing and Windows knew nothing. Dead End.

In desperation I repeated the right click in device manager. Browsed manually to the same driver folder as for the MTP device, hit ok and...problem sorted! Device connected, showing up perfectly in Kies (may it rot) and on Windows explorer.

I am connected and music is flowing. I have four movies on the phone and all that real estate of screen is a joy to behold!

  • Don't forget that you need to set the phone in Samsung Kies mode on the select USB mode. If this doesn't come up on the phone when you plug it in, unplug the phone, on the phone itself go to: applications -> settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings -> Samsung Kies and then replug the phone in. This USB setting can also be used for the mass storage mode simply by selecting mass storage instead. Location for this setting may have changed on later phones. Please also see applications -> settings ->wireless and networking ->USB Settings

I'm not a religious person but blessings heaped on whomever put that driver package together. I'm not guaranteeing it'll work for you but maybe it's worth a shot. Enjoy the phone!

I faced the same problem as you have mentioned.

i followed your steps and now I am able to run skies and connect to the phone.

How and where does the 'MTP device' show up on the device manager?

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Reetika,

On my device manager, the MTP device shows up under "portable devices" If you are having the MTP connection problem where the drivers are not loading properly, there should also be some sort of error symbol on device manager, probably under portable devices, possibly a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in it. Thanks for pointing out this step is missing!

I am having the same issue with vista 32 bits .Mobile screen shows that device is connected If we open my computer than it is there but on Kies screen it is not there. What else it says connectin device for hours & hours any solution?Pl

Hi Sanjay,

Need a little more information. When you first plugged the phone into your computer it would have told you it was loading drivers. They either loaded or they didn't. If you can't remember that far back, perhaps you could look at the system tray, (that's the collection of items on the far right hand side of your taskbar from the start windows icon, there should be items like your internet connectivity, antivirus, windows updates etc). When your phone is plugged in, if the drivers have not loaded properly, it will tell you in an icon within the system tray. You may have to click on the white arrow to extend the system tray and show all the icons. If the icon does tell you the drivers have not been loaded or are not loaded correctly or something of the sort, go to your device manager and look for the error on your phone connections and follow the instructions using the x86 (32bit) driver downloads. Thanks for stopping by!

Joe 6 years ago

Reetika I think I am having the same issue as you. My device is no longer showing up. Yesterday it showed up and the driver was installed - but still didn't want to work. So I reinstalled the driver in Kies... But now it won't show up in the device manager or in the list of devices to safely remove...

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Joe, I think the issue for the device no longer showing up seems to be different from the computer initially not loading the drivers correctly. Never having experienced the second issue of the SGS working for a time and then stopping working, I can't really work out what's going on. If you read message boards as I'm sure you have, there is everything from formatting the internal and external storage to factory resets to downgrading from Windows Media Player 12 to WMP 11 suggested as fixes. Clearly there's something going wrong with the SGS and no doubt that Kies is a pretty bad product. I think the only thing we can do is list what worked for our computer/SGS set up and wait for Samsung to get their asses into gear.

Does your SGS show up on the USB section of device manager at all? If not it sounds like something on the SGS is corrupting.... not good!

Perversly, I've just connected to my work computer and it went without a hitch. I don't have Kies loaded here but it mounted both the external and internal storage as two different drives. I did have to select mass storage device on the initial phone options and then further click on the usb connection on the phone and tell it to mount the drives.

Sanjay 6 years ago

Thanks Lymond .When I first connected my device the installation was complete & as asked by you I opened the device manager & on MTP I checked for update it showed that it is upto date,I am not very knowledgable about computers but this is what I could have tried. Moreover when I connect my device ,on Mobile screen it shows that it is connected with a usb icon But on Kies screen on lap top [WINDOW VISTA HOME PREMIUM] on right side of screen it shows 'connecting the device' please wait.So any other haelp please.

Thanks a lot

Apologies if the walkthru is confusing. You can't use the autocheck on the drivers because it doesn't update. You have to do it manually. Following the bullet pointed steps in the hub, download the correct driver (32bit vista or 64bit vista depending on which you have), unzip them to a folder you know the location of, go to device manager. At this point, it can sometimes be difficult to force it to look in a custom location. Much of the following only applies depending on options you are presented by device manager. Try the following, bearing in mind I can't see the options you are presented so I'm just listing what I see on my device manager now:

Right click on the MTP device, click properties, navigate to the driver tab on the window that pops up, click update driver, if a window pops up that says "can windows connect to windows update to search for software?" click "no, not this time" and hit next, then tick "install from a list or specific location", Then tick "search for the best driver in these locations" untick search removable media and tick "include this location in the search" Then hit "browse" and find the folder where you unzipped the drivers you downloaded earlier. Hopefully you will then be able to press "OK" when you have found the right folder although this is very temperamental. When you have done this, hit "next" and the computer should do the rest.

When I did this, it solved the MTP error but immediately brought up a CDC error. If this happens to you, follow the steps above again but select the CDC bit in device manager instead of the MTP. Good luck, I hope this helps!

When i went to the softpedia link i got an exe file and not a zip file. installing the exe file didn't work and if i unzip the exe file and let device manager search it it finds nothing. Am i doing something wrong?

You are 100% correct, it is an exe download. I'll have to see how that goes on a 32 bit system, but will be away for a few days. Meanwhile there is a zip here:

HOWEVER, I cannot vouch for this file at all. Rapidshare is not something I use often, you can get it free though. Apologies hub wasn't able to help at this point, I'll get back to it in a few days.

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

I've just done a quick check of the exe file (unzipping with 7zip) and it appears to contain the same files as the zip file for the x64 drivers.

Have you definitely navigated device manager to the folder where you unzipped the exe file? i.e. navigated to the folder manually? The autocheck, i.e. telling device manager to search for the drivers itself doesn't seem to work for some reason.

hello Lymond, I am running xp32b, after unzip drivers, I have several folder that contains inf. files.

What is the correct folder?

alesmine 6 years ago

for me this solution is not good. although in device manager I can see the driver problem, I search in every subfolder of drivers archive but nothing, no driver is you know the exact file name of driver?

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

I'm sorry this was not the right solution for you. Unfortunately I do not know the specific file (if there is only one file to specify) for your driver solution.

I have just tried to replicate the issue on a borrowed 32bit machine and unfortunately, the phone worked perfectly and there were no errors to correct and hence find out a solution.

When I manually directed the driver update, I directed it to the Samsung USB driver parent folder and not one of the specific folders inside. When you say no driver is accepted, do you mean it will not let you select the parent folder and press OK or that it simply doesn't find a driver to use in the folders?

alesmine 6 years ago

hello, thanxs for reply.

This problem seems to be a normal driver installation, as seen hundred times. I cannot select whole parent dir; I have selected each subfolders; driver installation starts [each subd contains inf. files] and after few seconds stops because it recognize wrong lines on driver. Maybe the inf. files are very similar to right one except for small details that are detected. So, on device manager I still have tht yellow marker....

alesmine 6 years ago

I have extract all files in one folder without any subdir, let windows search the correct driver but nothing happen, always same error: inf file contains an invalid section related to a service installation [translated from ita].

I've tried connecting my phone to a number of different OS's now (32bit vista, XP home, XP Pro, 64bit vista) and every one either connects first off or allows me to install the drivers.

A quick check on cnet brings up this for the .INF invalid selection:

It is an older thread but seems to have some more up to date posts including a Samsung Vibrant post. You may be able to try this, unfortunately it's not something I can confirm in the slightest will help you. From the threads on cnet it looks like a combination of a Windows problem with the Samsung problem on top! Let us know how you get on, best of luck!

hello lymond.

I'm using galaxy S on vista 32.

At first i connected by mass storage, and everything worked fine. 2 days later i wanted to connect again, and windows started installing drivers for unrecognized station.

After this i don't see my phone anywhere, no icon in system tray, not in explorer nowhere. I tried downloading the driver again, it did not work. Then i downloaded kies but that also did not work. When i go to device manager there is no error showing up anywhere. But also there is no MTP in the list neither is there a portable device.

The problem is on my laptop and not on the phone, because i had the same problem with the galaxy S of my girlfriend

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Glad that one worked!!!!

Thijs 6 years ago

Solved my problem.

Reinstalled the drivers, then reinstalled and updated Kies.

Then i connected the usb cable to my pc (not the phone just the cable) turned off my phone, then connected and started the phone. Then it automatically turns in mass storage mode, installs some drivers. Then i reconnected using Kies mode on phone, it installed some more drivers and now it works great.

Think this also might fix Joe's problem since i had the same thing with the phone not showing anywhere, not even in safely remove.

search for "046C184F-2188-4C99-A95A-9C0DCDC19050" in your register to make sure it's registered.

I don't know how to register it manually, as some people suggest to do.

maybe I should only add this key to registry? Where?

You needed to download one of the sets from the links in the above hub. Since you're talking about the 21 folders, I guess you've got one. If you don't know otherwise, it'll almost certainly be the 32bit drivers (which incidentally seem to be the most problematic to get working with the above instructions :(

You need to extract the whole zip file to a new folder somewhere you know where it is (eg my documents/samsung drivers). Then use use device manager and direct the manual driver update to the folder you extracted the zip file too. The computer should pick and choose from the 21 folders and other files to get the ones it needs. Hope you manage ok, good luck!!

Hi Enrico,

Being told the driver is up to date may mean you've selected the auto update option where the computer looks for drivers from folders, media drives (eg dvd) and the internet. When I tried this first time round it said the drivers were up to date. Make sure you've specifically directed the driver search to the folder you unzipped the driver zip/exe file to. Hope this helps.

Hey Alesmine, good to see you back again. Excellent link, seems to contain plenty of good info. Shame its up to the consumer to correct Samsungs mistakes. Great phone otherwise!

With the syncing to outlook, I recall one of the threads I read saying it worked once they logged into a Google account on the phone. I assume you've raided every message board dealing with this problem?

alesmine 6 years ago

Yeah, I read something about; I don't want to load my contacts to the net due to privacy; as I read there will be this month an update to froyo, I wait for it, maybe they will release a kies update too. Simply I prefer to wait a little bit more.....

Daragh 6 years ago

thanks for giving me hope. I had tried most of this myself, but the key for me to getting the drivers installed was to re-boot the phone after each one got installed - yes I did have to re-install the drivers (in my case 64-bit), but I did not have to re-boot my computer. Again, I think the mantra is to go back to Win98 days and REBOOT THE PHONE after each driver takes... I've got to say I'm very impressed with Kies, though - on the G1, we were on our own.

VERY IMPORTANT, please spread this info:

for a lot of Galaxy S, connection problems where windows won't recognize the phone even with the drivers. Make sure you have it plugged into a MAIN MOBO USB PORT. (My assumption is that this phone draws a lot of power b/c it assumes its charging so don't assume that any type of Hub or extension or random USB port on your keyboard or monitor will work.)

Hope this helps spread the word! I have yet to have a problem on any version of windows now, and even got my apps loaded easily.

Hi, i followed you tutorial, and ive got to say im so rubbish at computers etc i simply dont know what's going on. So please help me. First of i installed your MTP file and once downloaded i unzipped to decktop i then found the MTP device with the yellow triangle near it and right clicked, updated the drivers by manually locating the WHOLE file i unziped, to i clikc "USB drivers" file. It then loaded, and came up with. "the best driver software for your device is already installed". And still the problem persists :(

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Josh, Honestly, I have no idea what is wrong with your setup, though I hope it's fixed by now. Could you please post a little more detail, such as the operating system, (32bit or 64bit, vista, xp, 7). I have to reluctantly conclude that the majority of people having problems with this walkthru are the people running 32bit systems.

Secondly I would try cutting the folder where you unzipped the drivers to a different location, eg, Josh/my documents rather than your desktop. It might make no difference at all but sometimes computers are a little funny about stuff directly on the desktop.

alesmine 6 years ago

Hello, Josh

have you tried, in the same session if other usb devices I have solved [for Win XP, 32 bit] by installing this: , as suggested by Lymond. But I am not so expert, maybe the right procedure is to uninstall drivers, install microsoft update then reinstall drivers.

yes so I see. You may try fixing Kies with a couple of other suggestions. Lord Matt-Kun advised making sure you're plugged into the primary USB port to rule out current supply, somebody posted a link to a walkthru for removing files with extensions longer than 16 characters. Have you tried clicking on the "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"? sometimes reiterating to the computer that it does have the correct drivers seems to work.

Glassy profile image

Glassy 6 years ago from Aus

I had the same problem trying to load the Kies and couldn't get it to work but i found that all i have to do is plug the usb in to the phone and computer and press - mount.

To find the mount button just swipe down from the top of the screen after you make the connection, then once you press mount, the Samsung files should appear on your computer.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Glassy, thanks for mentioning this. I didn't include mounting the memories as I assumed that was the way the phone functioned and not a problem with connectivity. It is annoying that you can't swap files around both with Kies and through the mounted memories but thats how it is! :-)

Thor 6 years ago

I am very disappointed, I mean, the phone in itself is ok, but is it normal that Samsung markets one of his flagships with such a major flaw and no help whatsoever on their site?

is it normal that after giving them around 500$ then I must dig the Internet to find a solution to such a "very bizarre and very peculiar" need as connecting the phone to the PC?

I am not happy at all...

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Thor, having had to go through the same process we all have the same question. I think the only answer can be that while I've never come across software for plug in items that worked flawlessly, Samsung has managed to take second prize as the worst (after philips gogo gear). we're all hoping froyo will perform miracles and Alesmine is keeping us up to date on this! :)

I have the samsung Fascinate and when i connect it to Kies, it states the the device is not supported... anyone know if this phone will ever work with Kies?

Mattias Davidsson 6 years ago

Did not work for me. Only said I already have the latest drivers... and where do I find the CDC in the list? Is it a USB thing?

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Marc, I don't know if the Fascinate version will work with Kies in the future. It might be possible that Fascinate is based on an earlier version and the PC suite might work or that the phone is too new for Kies in which case you'll have to wait for a Kies update.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Mattias, I'm sorry this didn't work for you, that seems to be something that's happening. Definitely went for the full manual selection? The message you have the latest drivers will come up if you have selected any kind of autoupdate.

The CDC error came up directly after the MTP error was fixed, probably as a result of changing something to do with the MTP. It doesn't initially present as a problem so it won't be visible if it exists in your setup at all.

1stly how do i confirm whether my OS is a 32 or 64 bit, for re-installation of drivers.I have downloaded and tried with both though, but to now avail.

I am using XP-SP2-2002 version.

2ndly : i cant access the sd card even in mass storage mode. The "my computer" just shows two sep. drives but when i click on those it says 'please insert disk in E:/'

but yes atleast Kies detects the phone in mass storage mode and prompts a message on top right corner "not the correct mode, please disconnect and reconnect in samsung kies mode"... that's the only solace, atleast the device is detected.

Further on connecting in samsung Kies mode the error shown is MTP...

Also while installing the driver manually from an unzipped folder I could'nt locate the exact file which is specific to the MTP device, since i can not select the entire parent folder..any help on that please(on the comments posted here too i have seen many having this problem)!!

and not to mention my phone is not showing the option of USB debug mode.

It was initially there..but i guess its been missing since i once tried driver re-installation or may be driver-rollback.

Please Help, It has already been 3 weeks and i am yet to figure out how to unlock the full potential of this "otherwise-so-awesome" phone..

Please ...

and if anyone is in India could you please give me your phone no.

Thanks in advance.

Firstly, you've almost certainly got 32bit system, you can check with the two methods here:

Secondly as you've said, if you can't get to select the folder in the manual driver update, short of trying every .inf file in the 21 folders, I probably can't help you from this side of the ocean.

You can try setting the phone to mass storage mode right off, thats:

applications -> settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings -> Mass Storage.

and then connecting the phone via the usb cable. I would suggest that you have Kies completely closed (including down on the task bar and on the icon tray) when you try for mass storage.

I personally have mine set on ask on connection but mine functions without any issues at all.

There are a few posts around suggesting that it might be a problem the phone has with the latest version of Windows Media Player. There is also a small utility kicking around for removing files with extensions longer than 16 characters, you might try that as it appears a few people have had success with it.

Hope you manage to get it sorted soon, sorry this fix didn't work for you.

abhinav 6 years ago

hey Lymond

Ok i have partial success.

1: my system has a 32 bit OS.

2: I uninstalled the Kies completely.

then tried connection using the mass storage mode...n for the 1st time i can see the drives successfully mounted and i can easily browse through the folders.

Now looking forward to install Kies again and this time in the exact similar manner this blog suggests..

Thanx a ton man..

But yeah the ultimate victory over the bugs of Samsung is yet to be tasted!!

cheers man

Thanks for posting the method you used, at least you've got that much back. Froyo (android 2.2 update) is due at some point along with Samsung improvements. Hopefully this will fix most of the problems although there may be an issue of needing Kies connection to complete the upgrade. It has been suggested on various boards that the update can be done without Kies if the phone has been rooted. If you still can't get kies working by the time Samsung releases the update, you may have to consider rooting if you haven't already.

Good luck with the reinstallation!

taichee 6 years ago

Dear Lymond~@!

Thanks a BILLION! You don't know how much i appreciate your input on this sucky kies. Especially after i updated their 2.1 update 1 with baseband version I9000DXJG4. I failed to connect the phone completely.

I guess we have to "properly" unmount the SD card and can't be done abruptly or else, face the wrath of unsuccessfully connecting ur phone to pc. Grrr

Pray tell that if (a big IF) Samsung to finally release the Froyo update, it won't have to go thru Kies. Seriously. It failed to connect. I just update my files using Mass Storage and worked a charm.

Wonder why Samsung keep silence about this vital firmware upgrade?! Arghh! Hate it. Everyone is going Gingerbread and we're still stuck with froyo update!

Thanks a bunch dude!

Hey Taichee, thanks for your comment!

I understand that a rooted phone won't have to got through Kies, but as I've solved all my connectivity problems, I haven't really checked it out yet. At the moment I'm not going to mess around when it might affect getting froyo. I guess Samsung might be rolling out froyo (soon, I believe Oct 31st for Europe) while keeping mum on gingerbread as froyo/touchwiz/updates combo might be solving some of the basic problems we're all having. I can hope!

Just to check, you have the phone set in Kies mode when you connect it? and also don't touch the phone once you've set it in Kies mode unless it specifically asks you to select Kies mode again (in the list of modes). It seems to be very easy to disconnect the phone (e.g. pressing the home button disconnects the phone from Kies). Other than this, I'm afraid I can't help :( Sorry.

Hi Francesca, to be honest, I've never managed to connect to my PC via bluetooth (unless you're talking about transferring files etc.) and I can both connect to wireless networks, connect wirelessly to the computer (via network) and use the phone as a network in itself. Is it this kind of connectivity you're missing?

Alesmine 6 years ago

Francesca, connect the phone via bluetooth it's easy as it seems. Simply activate BT and make phone visible. Then pairing with pc as any other BT device.

I haven't had any problem with this.

I never connect it via wi-fi yet, cannot tell nothing about

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Veloce_ZA,

Just to check you definitely have the samsung galaxy S in Kies mode.

On the phone go to applications -> settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings -> Kies

Then plug in the phone but don't touch any of the buttons on the phone unless it asks you to either on the phone or the computer.

If you don't have the yellow triangle it's likely you don't have any driver errors. Beyond this I probably can't help too much. Sorry!

Darren 6 years ago

Hi Lymond, I have been getting the "connecting the device please wait" for my samsung galaxy S. So i tried to use your steps to help solve the problem. Upon clicking the "browse my computer for device software" option in device manager, there seems to be another option called "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". I tried both but nothing seems to happen when i click next, it just says that my device is up to date(only happens when i choose to ignore the second option).

If i choose to go with the "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", it will start an installation. It took very long and i left it on for about 3 hours and when i return to check on it, my computer gave me the blue screen of death! Luckly nothings wrong with my computer and phone, just that my phone was very hot.. I am running on windows 7 64bit. Please tell me what i did wrong, i would really like to get my phone updated to the latest build. Thx alot! Btw, was it correct to install the folder from the zip called USB drivers???

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Darren, thanks for posting. Just to cover a few of the simple things, you've set your phone to kies mode and not disconnected it by pressing any buttons since prior to plugging the usb in? have you tried connecting in mass storage mode? If so did it work? And thirdly are you getting an error in the device manager for the mtp device drivers?

Darren 6 years ago

It works on mass storage mode and yes i did set it to kies mode. There was the yellow triangle thingy on the device manager so yea.. This problem started after the new update for kies, it works fine the version before.

Now my phone keeps flickering from connect to home screen whenever i connect with kies.

Veloce_ZA 6 years ago

Hi Lymond,

Thanks for your feedback.

The phone is in Kies mode.

But I think I have found the error. I installed KIES on my wife's home PC (windows XP 32 bit SP3) and connected the phone, it worked first time, no problems at all. At work we still have SP2, so when they eventually install SP3 I will be able to confirm that that was the issue.

Yasser Fayek 6 years ago

Firstly, Thank you for your detailed step-by-step method of solving this painful problem. It worked for the first time, but insisted to keep us suffering in the second connection. Simply, without more disappointments, I reinstalled the .exe file (for 32 bit) and it worked again. I'll do the same every time it stops till Samsung solves this problem.

Many thanks for your support again.

I'm afraid I probably can't help if the drivers didn't manage to load. (Just to check, you do need to unzip the driver files to a folder). If it worked for earlier versions of Kies, I personally would completely uninstall Kies (including using a registry cleaner eg ccleaner which may help) and reload a completely fresh version. You may have already tried this but sometimes upgrades on existing software create problems and this might help. Hope you get it sorted!

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Thanks for posting that observation. There have been reports on some of the forums that Samsung (?) were advising people to downgrade their version of Windows Media Player as this was part of the MTP problem. Whether this has anything to do with the issue I don't know, but possibly minor changes that come with SP3 may help. 20 days to Froyo, hopefully this will solve certain problems!

Frojo is at the door

Samsung, on its official site dedicated to developers, has released the same day two curious zip appointed JPM and JP6 and contain within the source code for Android 2.2 Froyo Samsung Galaxy S.

Surely in a few days frojo will be released through the official update Samsung Kies.

If you want, the zip file is here:

go to mobile tab and scroll down to GT-I9000.

Cut and paste from Engadget:

Update: We've just been handed the official press release for the Andoid 2.2 Galaxy S update. Indeed, Nordic countries get it first (starting mid-October, aka, "now") before it's "gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world." Hello Mr,Lymond

I have the same problem that you had with the galaxy MTP that you wrote about in this link

after trying everything your article was the last option for me and I was hopping for it to work, I'm using windows 7, and I tried to do what you just said ,, but when I try to update the MTP, windows refuses and says that windows has determined that the driver is up to date and its the best ,, I can't replace it with the one you wrote , I don't know what to do , this is driving me crazy

hope hearing from you to save me

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

If the computer is telling you that the drivers are up to date and you are definitely telling the computer to search the folder that you downloaded and extracted the drivers from the link to, (i.e.) manual direction) try instructing the driver to do an update automatically, i.e. in device manager where the yellow triangle is at the side of the portable device or MTP device, right click, select update driver and tell windows update to search for the drivers. It may connect to the internet in order to do this.

If this approach does not sort the issue, you may consider uninstalling the drivers that are not working and reconnecting the SGS to the computer, letting it reload the drivers and/or manually selecting the drivers to load. The downside to this is that you may loose any connectivity you have (eg mass storage) with the SGS and your computer and it may not work.

Others have had this problem, I'm currently trying to source an XP PC that will replicate the problem in order to see if I can sort it. Meanwhile, have you tried just running the Setup.exe file in the unpacked exe download? This will install something but so far, I haven't been able to get to an XP pc to follow this through.

rayhouse 6 years ago

Hi all,

if you have trouble to connect to samsung Kies (mtp device driver does not install)

this was the reaason in my case:

when there are files on the sd card that have longer file names then 16 caracters kies will hang on the MTP device

delete those files and it will connect.

in my case i connected with mass storage mode and found in andriod/data com.seesmic longer file names i deleted the whole directory and everything connects perfectly

Tain 6 years ago

I have already tried that using a utility someone created that searched for files with longer than 16 chrts, it came up as two thumbnails for my pictures folder in my H:// but still does not work for some reason, God I wish samsung would have just built in an OVA update :@

I cannot install the USB MTP drivers as well. As Josh I too get the messege "The best driver software for your device is already installed" when I direct it to the driver folder. Is there no way to force windows to install drivers?

Gerben 6 years ago

Hi, your guide gave me the right drivers and this helps me put some files on my phone, but i still have the endless waiting for the device.

I have windows 7 x64. I have got the latest update of kies. At first the yellow triangle showed up in the device manager but the right driver fixed this. Also the galaxy s is shown under USB controllers. I never found what you called the CDC, so maby the problem is in this. It also doenst show under disconnect safely...

I already removed all >16 chars files from my phone and my driver.

I really hope you can help me, this is the most annoying thing i ever had with any piece of technology.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

the only other way I know of to force your system to install a particular set of drivers is to uninstall the existing ones. as mentioned above (to Mansoor) this does carry risks in that the SGS may not be the only connecting device to use those drivers and you may loose any (if you have any) connectivity between the SGS and the PC if it won't load right the second time.

I'm sorry, if you're connecting the phone to the pc in the correct manner (i.e. putting the phone in Kies mode etc) then I can't offer you anything more concrete. You can try different combinations, for instance, connecting the phone to the computer then opening Kies, opening Kies then connecting the phone to the computer, setting Kies on auto-open when the phone is connected, etc. This may make no difference but USB items used to be very sensitive to the order in which the item was connected, the program opened and drivers loaded.

If anybody is going to try uninstalling the drivers, I would suggest trying a fresh installation of Kies as well and looking up issues other users have had with USB products and the order in which they are connected to the computer.

As a side note, I don't think many users have had the CDC issue, perhaps that was something peculiar to my system.

iFX 6 years ago

Hey Gerben, when you say "latest version" - what's the version?

I was having trouble with mine yesterday - the version of Kies that came with the phone on 2 mini CDs was totally useless (I think it was version or something similar??).

I then downloaded a slightly newer one from the Samsung (AU) site: v1.5.1.10083, this DID connect to my phone and it no longer crashed - BUT it was still flaky.

I then read about v1.5.3 in some forum post, which is available here:

it was apparently released yesterday... Anyway, I uninstalled the previous version, and this one installed smooth and fast (compared to the previous two) - connected first go (though a little longer the first time - maybe due to my extra 8GB microSD full of music), but everything works great now.

Of course Samsung Apps doesn't support the SGS, but it's all working correctly now - even the Kies update (under settings), now checks for updates and says there's no updates available - it never did anything before for me... Although Froyo's not available for me (AU) yet :(

And I can't be bothered doing the reg hack to force it... yet... since it could be any day now... but if after a week or so we still don't get it, I'm just gonna have to force the 2.2 update ;)

Oh yeah, I'm on Win7 x64 (man I miss XP! been on Win7 for 11 months now, and the more I use it the more I dislike it :( USB sucks on 7 among so many other things).

iFX 6 years ago

Sorry, in all my raving, I forgot to mention - my initial problem, wasn't that the SGS drivers weren't working... they installed without a hitch - no error - no yellow triangle etc - it showed up as I9000 in "My Computer" and the screen of the SGS (after choosing to connect with Kies) said "connected".

But Kies itself just sat there trying to connect forever but never would.

What made it finally connect - not sure it's what actually fixed it or whether it was just coincidence, but I disconnected the USB, reconnected, but this time chose to connect as USB Mass Storage, mounted the device, viewed the files in explorer... then unmounted and disconnected.

Then when I reconnected and chose to connect with Kies again - loaded Kies... and after a few seconds it connected no problem...

Of course then I ran into the problems with the first two versions of Kies bugginess, (ie. Samsung Apps endlessly wanting to update but not actually doing any update - update under settings not doing anything - import contacts from csv crashing - firmware update not appearing to act quite right) all of which appears to be fixed with 1.5.3

not sure that helps though...

alesmine 6 years ago

Yeah, thankyou ifx, I use kies, and as you say, update under settings not doing anything - import contacts from outlook crashing - firmware update not appearing to act quite right, so I have installed this new and unknown for me

Install , phone immediately detected and connected, SOLVED OUTLOOK SYNC. all seems to work on this version.

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Sorry Alesmine, not looked at it too closely. I use owa and skyfire to get mine now :-(

Alberto 6 years ago

I had the same problem "Android MTP" error and Kies ( wouldn't want to connect to my Galaxy S.

I've sent a couple of emails to the support but I realized they didn't even know what they're talking about.

They asked me to try the setup on a different computer.

I thought it was too expensive to buy a new computer to use my new phone ;-)

I've managed to make it work right now, on my Win XP sp3 32bit.

What I've done is I've downloaded Win Media Player 11 (as someone suggested) unzipped the file and executed the setup of the "umdf.exe".

I didn't restart my PC.

At the end of the setup I've tried to connect my phone but I had the same problem.

I've downloaded the "Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x86"

and unzipped the exe.

I opened the device manager and updated the "Android MTP" driver (the one with the exclamation mark).

Since Win Xp doesn't allow to scan the whole tree, I choose the first folder "01_Simmental".

At the end of the setup everything was fine.

Now I can use my Kies.

I had tried to update the update the drivers before but I had the same problem cause, apparently, there was a problem

with an INF file.

So I guess you have to install the UMDF before or, at least, check if this service is installed and working on your PC:

Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework.

I hope this helps.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Alberto, thanks for posting such a comprehensive suggestion, I think we maybe need to have a big list of procedures that have worked.

Currently the one we're hoping is a fix is that two of the above posters have said that the latest version of Kies: version has solved all of the problems they've been having to date. Hopefully this is Samsung finally getting its act together.

Gerben 6 years ago

i too have version and it is still not working...

Alberto 6 years ago

I've read loads of blogs and forums and everyone has had different problems.

For what I can understand the problem with Windows Xp (I guess Seven is another matter) is the tight dependency with "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework" service.

I din't have it ... and I don't know why, cause, apparently, it must be a Window Media Player component.

Since I don't like to keep unused services running on my PC, I've put it on manual and I've seen that Kies doesn't connect if this service is not running.

I've exchanged a few emails with the support here in the Uk and I've told them what I was doing and that I was installing "Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x86".

They advised me not to do it, but I've told them I did it, anyway, and it worked.

Maybe they will put together a new setup which can solve these issues.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Gerben, thanks for posting that, so two for one against, and still the problem.

There are a lot of different solutions, but as far as I've seen, the problems are the phone won't connect at all, the phone connects in mass storage but Kies won't see it, the phone connects mass storage and Kies sees the phone but the connection time is indefinite, the phone connects in mass storage and Kies connects the phone which immediately goes loopy flicking between connected and disconnected.

The solutions that seem to crop up most frequently are the drivers above, various manipulations of WMP, removing the 16 character file extensions on the phone, various states of phones with and without the external sd card and various combinations of these.

Personally I've now connected my phone to 1 Vista x64, 2 versions of Vista x86, 2 versions of XP pro, 1 version of XP home and Win 7 x64 and cannot get a situation whereby the phone will not connect either first time or with the above drivers. I half wonder if there's something about the phone rather than the PC setup.

Tain 6 years ago

I have tried everything I have read on forums and other places with out any luck the new versions of Kies did not fix my MTP driver problems and I already have umdf.exe installed, no matter what I did I can not get my Galaxy S to connect to any pc (windows 7, XP SP2) I simple have given up until Samsung decides to release a stable software that will connect seamlessly with my phone.

We might not be fans of Apple but you have to admit it, as shitty as iTunes for Windows is I have never had troubles connecting my old iPods to update with it.

I also had previously a Nokia N95 8gb and the Nokia software was top notch when it came down for updates or anything else.

Samsung Keis has to be the worst software I have came across in my life, plagued by so many problems it is a joke to be released for the end users.

Sorry for ranting and complaining, I know I will not achieve anything by doing so but maybe Samsung can see how many people actually are effected by their software and might decide to improve it or implement OVA update hopefully in the future versions.

My experiences up until now with my Galaxy S, have not been the most positive and I am starting to doubt whether I had made the right decision in purchasing it over the iPhone4, I love my phone but such software issues(Android & Kies) really ruin the whole concept of integrated software system. Hopefully by the time Froyo (delayed again until November) gets released we might have a stable version of Kies that connects to the Galaxy S without issues.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Tain, I completely agree with you on the whole connectivity issue. I previously had a Nokia 5800xm and had no issues connecting it at all, whether by bluetooth or by usb cable. The phone itself is streaks better than the 5800xm but the software is terrible. #

Have you tried uninstalling the existing drivers?

Alesmine 6 years ago

Yeah, after more than 500€, kies should manage a coffee usb heater too, with a message on the phone that is ready to drink!

For those that don't know that there's a kies alternative, try this:

The phone must be in USB debug mode: Menu/Settings/Applications/Development/Debugging USB: Checked.

Maybe this thread is not the right place for this, but

as this software does not install any driver, for those who have the doubt if trouble is on drivers or kies itself, may help.

Oh, Lymond, it has automatic sync with outlook.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Excellent! Thanks Alesmine, I shall be installing that tonight. This thread is about getting the SGS connected to the computer. It's Samsungs fault we have to find work arounds!

Tain 6 years ago

Hey Lymond, I have tried un-installing and reinstalling the drivers, alas nothing helped the same troubles as usual. Mind it I work for a software company and I have seen my fair share of bad software but so far Kies trumps them all by far.

As Alesmine said for a phone that is premium cost and high end this, the last thing we should have worried about it making it connect to any pc.

Btw Alesmine I will try the software that you have mentioned, but does it handle software updates as Kies? I know the only other way to update it is to root it first and then use Odin to flash with Froyo, but I do not want to root my phone as I am scared it might brick it even with some of my tech background a bricked phone is a brick, and I think mine has the 3 button recovery mode disabled so no hardware way to reboot the phone afterwards.

Hopefully someone will find a way to implement a one way fix to finally get Kies working...

Alesmine 6 years ago

Tain, for what I see, that software [MPE] "only" manage phone with pc, by sync contacts, agenda, pics, browse files and so on.

It comes without drivers and cannot update phone firmware, I guess this is a feature holded by Samsung.

But if phone is seen by pc and kies doesn't work, then you can solve with this, waiting for a funktional kies release.

If a driver problem, as Lymond already suggest, if nothing work at first attempt, it's not a bad idea to uninstall all kies with drivers, well clean with eg. ccleaner, maybe update [if not yet done] basic windows components like IE or media player and restart again with the logical above suggestions. I am not so expert on these things, but I think it's a luky trick to guess what combination of windows component work bad with phone driver.

Alesmine 6 years ago

For win 7 64 bit, I have found this page with drivers and instructions to install, read till the end.

I haven't test it because I am running xp32.

Alesmine 6 years ago

....and for xp32 sp3 I have these:

I read here

that these drivers may solve.

A brave can test them?

I' m not afraid to test, but maybe I can achieve a false positive result, because my system is already ok :-)

Dude, you are AWESOME!

I have to say one thing - I cannot stress enough, when plugging in the USB cable - plug it into the USB ports on the BACK OF YOUR PC! It just doesn't work when plugged into the front USB as what happened on my Medion PC.

Samsung really need to sort this problem out - I will buying HTC again once my contract has run out!

Thanks again Lymond - I could kiss you! (Okay, maybe that is pushing it slightly!) :)

Alesmine, That looks very encouraging! Aside from Kies translating into German as "gravel" (:-D, the thread indicates that the specific folder of drivers for Samsung is the "16_Shrewsbury" folder. There are 5 .inf files in that folder. So pending confirmation... looks like you've solve the issue of not being able to select the parent folder!

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Gav, No problem, glad it helped.

I would say that it's not necessarily the port on the back of your pc. It's the primary port you need as this carries the greatest current output. The ports on the front of pc's tend to be similar to a card reader - a reader with usb ports just plugged into another usb port.

That being said, the information is correct. Try all the usb ports on your computer!

Hi Lymond,

Just bought the Samsung Galaxy S. I love the phone. I had a few nights of playing around install/re-install, reboots and the works to get XP to successfully connect with the Galaxy .....

Your steps worked like a beauty. Phone connects. I am happy and I want to say thank you for taking the time to post this info on the web.

Hi there. After reading your guide and everything, I still couldn't get Kies working. Then I stupled upon one single post regarding Microsoft Framework. I installed it, and straight away all problems went away - it wasn't any drivers or anything. U can get it here:

Hope it helps everybody as it helped me! :)

Hi experts, I am facing a serious trouble with my new SGS.

When I connect SGS to KIES, it can’t recognize it, though it can recognize SGS when in ‘mass storage’ mode. In that case, it suggests (at upper right corner) to connect SGS in PC KIES mode. It means, KIES is recognizing SGS (as mass storage). Also, when I choose the option as PC KIES in my SGS (the 1st option), some times it shows that ‘connecting’ and some times it doesn’t show any message though the USB connection Sign is shown.

To resolve this, I followed the following steps:

First, updated KIES to the latest version ( after several tries.

Then, I ran the ‘driver recovery’ from KIES (from upper left pop-up menu). It completes the installation and the MTP driver issue is resolved (I mean, this msg is not shown anymore)

Then, I ran the ‘driver recovery’ again. This time, after installation, it tries to load/install the “PCI Simple communication controller” but failed. I tried several times but this problem exists.

Till buying, I couldn’t connect SGS to PC to sync. I badly need help for this problem.

My pc has windows 7 as OS.

Henrik 6 years ago

Hi Tauheed.

I'm running windows 7 too, so I would strongly suggest that you install the MS Framework file (posted link in previous post). It will most likely let Kies and your SGS connect.

This is a proffered solution I haven't seen before:

It does have some stuff you may not have done before (c command and reg commands) but it is very easy to follow.

Argee 6 years ago

Kies is FINALLY working for me (win 7 x64).

I tried the all of the solutions listed here, but none corrected the MTP/home screen flashing problem for me until I uninstalled Windows Media Player (Control Panel>Programs>Turn Windows Features off), uninstalled the i9000 drivers (for the 18,000th time), rebooted, connected SGS and waited for the drivers to finish installing, then started kies. All of that to find there are no firmware updates...soon, froyo, soon.

I haven't dared to disconnect and try again, I'm just gonna bask in the glory of having the useless software working for a bit.

Glad you got it working, that looks like a solution I could well believe in. I've seen a few references to WMP and it certainly fits with the MTP problem.

I think im having same problem but not sure. i have read msot comments and the information above and it seems irrelevant. I have connected my phone to the computer. it saysd turn to pc kies mode. I do that and it doesn't read my phone. I can't even see my phone in my computer. so i go back to mass storage mode and i can finally see my phone/sd card. I then try to goto the drive, which i do and it says drive status, update drive ETC. but i cannot click update driver??? any suggestions?

All, I managed to replicate a scenario whereby the phone said connected and Kies said Connecting.... I did this by connecting it through a (long) series of USB Hubs (where each takes a little power to run the hub). Definitely try connecting the phone through ALL usb hubs (one at a time) before looking to other solutions. You may need to unplug a mouse or keyboard in order to find the primary usb port.

Gav 6 years ago

Fixed my issue with the Galaxy S (again!)

Ended up putting in a new SD card, formatting and voila.. it connects first time!! I'd recommend formatting the card as I've read issues with long filenames have issues with the MTP error.. I so wished SAMSUNG would fix their sh*t!

any tips?? (really bad dutch translation :) )

i mean any suggestions?

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Gav, unfortunately this seems to be a problem that a lot of people have had. The only thing I can suggest from personal experience of trying to create the issue is make sure you try all usb ports. If you have one of these powered hubs (usb extension hub that plugs into the mains) you could try that, but I certainly wouldn't go out and buy one.

DB, thanks for your post, it confirms something I speculated on earlier - some of the time it's to do with the phone, not the computer set-up. Have you the same version of Android on the two phones? (just to check also that you have the phone in the right setting!).

Maybe try to figure out other differences between yours and your girlfriends phones, e.g. inclusion of removable sd cards, when you plugged it in (kies open/not open at the time), the android build etc.

Gav 6 years ago

Thanks Lymond I will give that a go shortly! Shame you don't work for Samsung... they'd have sorted these issues by now if you was!

db 6 years ago

hi lymond

everything was the same, i guess, thing is, my phone was already experiencing more problems with apps that were running smoothly on hers

i think she's even a heavier user than me :), so i don't think it has anything to do with the applications

i can't check whether the versions are the same since she updated to froyo, or is there a way to 'see' older version of android (we both had 2.1, both had never done any updates)

Thanks Argee, I did hope it would go ok and to give them due, the second time took about two minutes from connection to reset with only a mild panic when it sat there flashing the 'S' symbol of the Galaxy S and not rebooting to finalise, but it did after I unplugged it from the computer.

At the moment I'm mixed on how good it is. It definitely is going to take a breaking in period for me. Initial view of it was not good, for one, the pull down task bar was taking two pulls, one to get it halfway and another to get it all the way. That seems to have sorted itself.

There is a noticeable increase in the speed of some tasks (connecting to a wireless network is really fast now as well as a marked improvement in position accuracy on gps though it took longer to lock). There are definitely a few hiccups with mine though. Screens lagging for a second or so, having to load up the home screen icons when you exit some programs (similar to a refresh on a pc desktop), disturbingly, swype being a little unresponsive where it used to be perfect. Minor stuff at the moment and undoubtedly oneclicklagfix may make a difference but annoying considering I had a flawlessly working phone before. It does perform slightly better on benchmarking though!

Anybody else got it yet?

Argee 6 years ago

I've heard Froyo may come out for us tomorrow, but I'll believe it when I see it. No official announcement from the carrier yet.

As for the problems you noted, I found my GPS sometimes took a ridiculously long time to connect, so I'm thinking that won't be a disappointment for me. I've also noticed that, the last little while anyway, the home screen icons take a while to show up when I boot up. Hopefully it sorts itself out.

I'm interested to see how it does with battery life, if there is any difference at all. Yesterday, for example, I made 3 short calls, sent about 30 short emails and ran a news app a couple of times. After 3 and a half hours, I was down to 52%.

The other issue I'm hoping it fixes is the coma problem...

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hey Alesmine, it's finally here!

A couple of things I've noticed:

1) the battery usage no longer displays information correctly, only showing usage for display, cell standby, and phone idle despite the fact it used to show things like opera and skyfire, thinkfree etc.

2)Phone is a bit more unstable. Mine has crashed out of programs like opera a couple of times. (never had it crash out before).

3)Power control now has the screen rotate as well as wireless, bluetooth, gps and brightness.

4)Pretty sure battery life is not as good, though that could be down to using chrome lite rather than opera much more.

5) connection to wifi is much quicker.

6) gps is much more accurate though takes longer to lock.

7) Opera still doesn't exit in the manner it's supposed to :(

these are just things I've noticed about my phone.

alesmine 6 years ago

At first strike I have no connection problem.

The only issue is that outlook sync stops at 40 percent, I am trying now with MPE and with android-sync. Let me see, maybe is only a foolish like reboot, not yet done....

Yes, connection to wifi is much quicker and gps is much more accurate. taking a closer look with SGS tools, froyo has GPS settings like those suggested in many treads.

Hi Flashlegs, a little off topic but...

Have you tried it lots of times? There must be a lot of folk trying to get the download from the same server, it may just be busy with a lot of other requests. Try a couple of times. Second just to check, you're not having issues with the Kies connectivity?

alesmine 6 years ago

Hey Flashlegs

if the software does not recognize the update, then you can follow these simple steps to force the upgrade to Froyo recognition. Let's see how:

First you should download this patch Kies here:

Connect your phone to Kies and make sure the software detects the phone

Run Registry Patcher Kies, if you start it with Windows administrator rights

Click on the patch and then on the only item that appears

Then go to File> Backup Load

Select ITV file included in the package that you downloaded

Before performing this procedure, however, it is advisable to remove (if you have them) the root and the lag-fix from your Galaxy.

1. Connect USB cable to phone and PC (phone will not be recognized and start blinking on MTP Application screen)

2. Press Home key

3. Pull the top slider down and press Turn Off button to unmount USB

4. Remove USB cable from your phone

5. Put the USB cable back

Darth Cynical 6 years ago

I found another work around on mine. Same problem, wouldn't connect or install drivers. However, after formatting my internal sd card, it re-installed the drivers and connected first time. Same issue after disconnecting and re-connecting the usb cable though. After some more experimentation, I found if I deleted just the Android folder on the internal card it would work again everytime.

This allowed me (finally!) to update to Froyo through the software. Since the 2.2 update it has worked everytime it's plugged in without messing about. Hope this helps someone.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Muneeb,

Unfortunately without your phone in hand, none of us, probably Samsung included could give you a "proper" answer. One of the worst things about connecting this phone is the way it seems to vary from individual phone to individual phone. There are people on here who have actually reported a phone working on a computer and a second phone not working on the same computer.

Unfortunately I can only suggest you go through the posts here and on the android and samsung forum message boards and try each of the many suggestions one at a time.

I would start with the easy ones such as trying every single USB port you have on the computer including any you may have a usb mouse or keyboard plugged into, making sure there are no other usb devices plugged in at the same time.

I would leave the suggestions that involve formatting the internal memory till last as these most probably lead to loosing all the data you have on the memory which is a problem if not backed up.

Finally I understand that a rooted phone can be upgraded without Kies but that this may very well void warranties although there are ways to revert back to the factory settings. You will need to read the walkthroughs and such carefully before trying this and I personally do not take any responsibility if you try it :-)

There is a conflict between Google and Samsung over Samsung apps. I don't recall fully the specifics but the net result is that Samsung apps on Kies is not properly (or at all) supported on Android devices.

Maybuz 6 years ago

Tried almost everything & nothing seems to work. Following your guide, I've got further than any other methods. It recognises the fault, I install the driver & All is ok. But I go to open Kiese & it reverts back to the same "this device cannot start (code 10). I phoned Samsung today & what a waste of time that was. Their rather rude & uninterested "Support" team member put me on hold for 10 mins just to tell me to re-install Kies. Joke. I think I may take the path of pestering Samsung every day until they help me properly!

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Hi Maybuz, an error message like that suggests the main problem may be with Windows rather than Kies/Galaxy S, although certainly if the SGS was a little more stable you may not have had the error. I would try looking for ways round the direct error message rather than trying to link it to SGS problems. Solve one and you may solve the other at the same time.

Here is a quick link to get you started although I would hesitate to uninstall your entire USB bus drivers...

still, if you haven't tried this course already this is probably the kind of thing you're looking for.

Maybuz 6 years ago

Thanks for the link Lymond. Re-installed USB drivers, Followed advice on Samsung's trouble shooting page about re-installing drivers. Still no success....hmm. Starting to annoy me now. Thanks for your help.

which I got from here:

there are a number of links on the page for similar errors, but they seem to be lost to the wilds of the web. You could try googling for them (copy and paste the link into google search) and going for cached pages. Incidentally what operating system are you?

William 6 years ago

My drivers were OK and the PC could see my Galaxy S when plugged in. The Phone would start up the MTP application, initialise, and would then indicate it was connected, but Kies remaining in the "Connecting the device" phase indefinitely.

But when I switched on USB debugging

– Main Menu >> Settings >> Applications >> Development >> (make sure “USB debugging” is checked), and then plugged in the phone, while the phone complained that USB debugging was incompatible with a Kies connection, Kies was suddenly able to see and connect to the phone.

I'm now in the midst of upgrading to Froyo.

I hope this helps someone else.

Hi Alesmine,

I have the bluetooth issue on mine too. I can't even get files from other phones via bluetooth and its not something I've bothered to find out about.

You are right, the phone is nice in some respects but Samsung has failed to make the basics work on it.

One of the things I did notice when I upgraded to Froyo is that the phone has become much more sensitive to the usb port I'm using. I have to use the primary usb port otherwise it won't connect. Is it possible you've actually damaged the usb port on the phone with the damaged cable? Also like you say, there's stress on the port with the positioning on top. Did you look into getting rid of the phone and getting the LG?

Sorry for the late replies on posts, I dropped and broke my laptop just before xmas and don't really have a machine to work on just now.

Duncan 6 years ago

I have just found a solution to this problem on the Samsung Galaxy 580 (GT-5800).

I have Kobo (eBook reader) and its files have long names which for some reason the MTP driver does not like, I moved these files off the SD card and was able to connect.

This is not very convenient and I hope a solution can be found.

I hope this helps others

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for posting that, I think this falls under the problem of file extensions longer than 16 characters. On the GT-I9000 Galaxy S phones, some helpful person has created a small free program to search and remove these offending files. This appears to have helped some people solve the connection issue but not everybody.

Just to let you know that .NET 4.0 fixed my MTP error on Windows 7 64-bit

Michael Clermont 6 years ago

Ah yes, I have the Galaxy S Fascinate from Telus.

Kies doesn't seem to be able to connect to the phone (indefinite connecting..), but Windows is 100% recognizing the phone.

Alesmine 6 years ago

Hello Michael Clermont

I already have NET 4.0, but reinstalled, who knows...?

Nothing changes. Always unrecognized by windows. That's the big problem.

I should have a phone problem this is the only way I can explain why, once connected on car charger, my phone says "usb connected" !!! ?????

Hi Alesmine, a new over from xda forum

Jup007 posted :

Anyway , after searching all over the internet , I

found the way to get USB connection working

again without hard reset . Try this :

1 . Dial * # 7284 # . This should open app called

PhoneUtil ( there are other ways to get to it )

2 . In USB section , swith it to Modem , then

switch it back to PDA

3 . Exit, and USB should work .

And in my case it works ( rooted i5800 ) .

- This is not for people with driver issues .

- This is only for when you connect your phone

to the pc, you ear the usual beep but there is no

further info in the notification bar and nothing

happens .

May not be what we're looking for but maybe worth a shot?

Thankyou Lymond.

Already done weeks ago and now too, but no connection.

I will bring this disaster phone to service.

Frostholm 6 years ago

I have a different problem. I have installed the drivers and as a result i can now see my phone in kies. It says that it is connecting the device, and that i have to wait. my problem is that it stays this way to infinity. it never finishes connecting.

Kies tells me that i have the latest update, and device manager tells me that the driver is succesfully installed.

anybody have any ideas?

Lymond profile image

Lymond 6 years ago from UK Author

Frostholm, very sorry but we seem to have reached an impasse on that problem. Have you tried the other techniques such as removing long file extension files or putting the phone into usb debugging mode, connecting it, then if it works turning the debug mode off and trying again or most importantly (because its easy) trying every single other usb port on your computer?

The phone should work for mass storage mode (access to the memory internal and external) now that you have the drivers working.

Michael Clermont 6 years ago

Strange thing, for these having a Base System driver error (got Dell XPS M1530 Win 7 x64).. The problem might escalate, like killing 80% of the Dell drivers in device manager. Reinstalling the driver would cause an error.

I fixed that by removing Kies and the Samsung drivers. This is very weird... On my other computer (win 7 x64) I'm having the indefinite connecting problem, and now the phone doesn't want to initiate the USB prompt.

On my work computer, Windows XP x86 will not recognize the phone at all, saying that the driver installation failed and that I have an unknown USB composite device. Kies doesn't have a clue of what's happening on this computer (did recognize the debug mode at one point).

On my linux netbook, it accessed the phone without installing any driver. But sadly, Kies is not on linux.

I come to the conclusion that Samsung (phone division) really sucks when it comes to writing PC drivers. I never had a problem with their LCD & printers.

Go figure..

Jahrome 6 years ago

these guys know their stuff one try and my phone hooked up no problems

Mantas 6 years ago

I used multiple things to solve this (installed custom drivers, .net4, hard reset). Nothing worked. Then after I plugged phone accidentally I selected kies, but kies wasn't running. And mtp drivers were installed without any problems and my phone was connected. Then I started kies and it found my samsung!

Wonder 6 years ago

This worked for me:

Unmount all SD (internal and external) and connect to Kies. Instantly recognized my vibrant and then I updated to 2.2!

Hope this helps someone else who was struggling like me.

Dave 6 years ago

Updating to 2.2 right now using Kies. This is what worked for me:

1. Except for disabling anti-virus and firewall (I know Windows wouldn't survive long without these), followed instructions up to "Upgrade the device to KA6" step on

2. Kies closed. Follow

3. Plugged phone in, let it install more drivers.

4. Unplug phone

5. Start following at "Upgrade the device to KA6" on

Trying to manually install the x64 driver didn't work. Windows claimed the driver was "up to date". I never got the "mtp usb device" driver to work (still has the yellow triangle).

Thanks everyone who posted answers!

Thanks for this. Also works for Galaxy tab. MTP error first - install Galaxy S driver - then W7 knows to go to find the correct driver and finds the GT1000 correctly!

Why it cant recognise the Tab first off I dunno, hey ho - good find!

barbara 5 years ago

install windows media player 10 and new version Kies . That did the trick for me.. On Microsoft Windows, MTP is supported in Microsoft Windows XP if Windows Media Player 10 or later versions are installed. Windows Vista has MTP built-in. Most MTP-compatible devices do not appear through drive letter assignment in Windows Explorer, instead they will appear as "devices" in Windows Explorer.

Fauji 5 years ago

Helpful link and excellent instructions.

Had MTP (code 10 error) on Vibrant (T-Mobile) 2.1. The link you gave did not solve the MTP error at first but helped with debugging enabled. Kies mini upgraded the phone in debugging enabled.

Surajbhise, not quite sure what you're getting at here. Are you trying to connect the phone to the internet? or just connect the phone to the computer? Also are we talking about the right phone? That looks like Galaxy 5 which is the GT I5500 phone not the Galaxy S which is the i9000.

Yair 5 years ago

Hi Lymond,

This thread has become the master of trying "solving MTP issues"

I get the MTP problem and I am not able to resolve it.

System - Win XP SP3, latest Kies SW

Phone - Galaxy S, basic SW is Froyo

I have tried the following till now:

1. removing/installing Kies and the associated driver files

2. Remove all file names with more than 16 characters

3. Reset to factory default

4. Moved through all USB ports

5. Used the USB cable provided with the phone.

6. running umdf.exe - gives an error that I have a more updated file

The only way out is MyPhoneexplorer

I noticed that I when I use "MyPhoneexplorer" it sees more files than I see in Explorer. Still I want to use Kies.

Any other suggestions?

yair 5 years ago

After few more hours, here is the solution.

I removed from the system libusb-win32

restart and everything ok.

You can add that to the list of solutions

Yair, thanks for your posts, another to the list...

BizmoN 5 years ago

Firstly, I'm not a tech head... just a dude who fiddles with computers... So this is fix is a little wordy and random like me...

but Kries opps, I mean Kies (using windows xp) is now synced with my Samsung galaxy s GT-19000.

Step one: make sure you have Kries

My phone was contected through USB and the phone was in MTP mode for kies.

As, I gave up on anything working to fix this syncing issue.... I went to uninstall kries and for some reason I decided to goto add/remove software

instead of using the kies uninstall... While in Add/Remove, I noticed the driver itself was it's own program and had been installed (I'm thinking most problems for all lie here).

So I uninstalled the driver through add/remove software and left Kries installed

After uninstall was complete, I first used this older driver (trial and error ya know) found here:

x86 (32bit) version:

x64 (64bit) version:

but that didn't work either ( but, I'm not sure if that is a important step or not, to finally getting it working (it's just what I did) up to you if you do it)

then I used the build in Kies "install driver" utillity under tools...

Now goto device manager... ( Control panel --> system --> hardware tab --> device manager for you noobsters )

and you'll still see the yellow "!" is still there with the MTP driver under portable Devices...

not to worry... (though I did at first!)

now, right click the driver and choose update, then let MicroSoft help you find the driver,

so choose "yes this time only", then "choose install the software automactically...

after that... the magic should happen.... let me know if this worked out for ya! goodluck!

Nicolas 5 years ago

Hi there

and thanks for this very interesting thread

I have a Galaxy S I900 with FROYO.BVJP8

I could connect it to my home comp but a my office for some reason I get the MTP error no matter what I try.

So far it works only in mass storage mode, which is OK for photos or mp3s, but I'd love to use Kies or even Windows Media with my phone.

First, I have Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bits)

Here's what I've tried :

- updating .net frameworks

- installing the latest kies version

- installing Microsoft Active Sync

- trying each and every USB port

- installing the above mentioned drivers manually using the right folders

but none of those solutions worked.

I don't like to give up, but now I don't know what to do..

Any suggestions ? thanks in advance

"Then i connected the usb cable to my pc (not the phone just the cable) turned off my phone, then connected and started the phone. Then it automatically turns in mass storage mode, installs some drivers. Then i reconnected using Kies mode on phone, it installed some more drivers and now it works great."

Hi Thijs,

Billions of thanks pal. I used to get connected to Kies from the day one. After a few months (May be after firmware upgrade to 2.2 or may be Kies upgrade to 2.0) the damn thing stopped connecting. Mass storage mode was fine. Kies always prompted that this is not the supported mode but in Kies Mode it kept "Connecting" perpetually.I tried every thing including factory data reset. All kinds of drivers- virtually every thing under the sun or in computer/on net.

Thanks to your magic Mantra Viola !!!! One click fix !!

Lymond profile image

Lymond 5 years ago from UK Author

Hi Hong,

Is it possible you haven't selected "connect usb storage" when it shows on the phone screen after you have plugged the phone into the computer and selected mass storage?

You should see the green android with a usb symbol for its arm and the connect usb storage message at the bottom of the screen.

Sometimes if it doesn't show, connect the phone, select mass storage from the menu, then immediately disconnect the phone simply by taking the wire out and then plug it back in again. The correct screen should then hopefully show.

Lymond 5 years ago from UK Author

Hi Ashley, the i9000 will start to charge as soon as you plug in the usb lead (computer to phone). As far as I'm aware, there is no specific charge mode.

Have you tried:

on the phone itself go to: applications -> settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings -> Samsung Kies and then replug the phone in. This USB setting can also be used for the mass storage mode simply by selecting mass storage instead.

This function may also be located in applications -> settings -> wireless and network ->USB settings.

I'm guessing the lost contact part is where the update interrupts the phones connection to the PC to update that part of the OS. A friend of mine with this problem solved it by using a different computer. It seems to be part and parcel of a delicate connection between the computer and phone.

alesmine 5 years ago

Hello Lymond

There's no much to say: high end phone has a top hardware, every app runs smooth without problems, I give more importance to display. I think amoled still lead, galaxy S2 can be a good choice.

If you like imaging then choose a top camera, like sony or nokia.

If interested on 3d, actually there's no choice, LG P920 rules. I haven't seen evo3D, but all test on the net confirm LG on top about 3d.

About the phone itself I like a lot, there are not important lacks (like a bluff gps or mtp error on galaxy S). All seems to be good. About features there are a lot of stuff on the net, what you can't find is that it does not need a software like kies (only drivers, then you can see it as an usb memory), upgrades are downloaded directly on the phone via wifi when available.

If you want more detailed impressions, just ask

Dear Laymond.

Lymond profile image

Lymond 5 years ago from UK Author

Hi Tanveer,

The solution works only for some 32bit Windows and some 64bit windows, it does not seem to work for everybody though. Unfortunately it has worked for me every time on 4 different Windows operating systems including Win7 x64 and Vista x86... I'm sorry it hasn't worked for you but as the 200 or so comments above may indicate, it hasn't always been successful and without a non working system to experiment with, I've kind of given up. There are quite a few other solutions available, hopefully one of those can work for your SGS...

Three days ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy S 5.0 - an impulse purchase to complement my iPod Touch (a larger screen - easier to read).

I have now strayed into the world of Samsung Kies. GOD! What a nightmare! How do these people ever keep a job - let along sell mobile phones.

I have friends with Galaxy S phones. The Galaxy S II looks good. But how on earth do they manage with this non-functioning, incomprehensible software. (I understand that Galaxy Tab returns are running at seven times the rate of iPads - and I can quite understand why. If I can't get this thing to accept music and videos from either my MacBook or Windows 7 desktop or laptops, back it goes!)

Lymond profile image

Lymond 5 years ago from UK Author

Apologies for the late replies, BT is even worse than Samsung!

P_eggy, I can't advocate this as a sure method but personally, I would probably remove the drivers from my computer and go through the process of getting the computer to recognise the phone and load the drivers all over. However, this may not solve the problem and might very well make it worse.

Rafa, is the phone/computer connection working, can you transfer files and otherwise perform normal operations in Kies?

Yoann, you're right, it's a long story.

Misterjohn, hopefully you'll have no problems, I do agree about Kies, though quite frankly, I've never found connection software to be any good. Creative was clumsy and limited, Itunes was restrictive and a PITA to remove, Phillips go gear was non functional, Kies is pointless apart from Android updates. The best was Archos G-mini - no software, just a folder.

I manage with Kies because I never really use it.

I'm pretty sure this is a 32-bit comp, is it possible to have x64 then? I just googled and I got the impression all 32-bit win7 were x86, but I might be wrong?

Thanks for taking the time to help a desperate soul in these harsh times! (no, I'm not overdramatic! :)

Yo, I just got fed up and tried to use the other file ( but the same thing there, it says it's not compatible with a 32-bit OS, which I believe when it's coming from that version, but the x86 is just mocking me! I want to connect to Kies, just once, so I can upgrade to ICS.. :(

Hi Payam,

The SGS2 does have a software upgrade over 'air' (probably best over wifi) under "about phone - update" I've never tried it so can't vouch for it but that could be a solution to not being able to connect.

I assume you've tried other USB ports on your computer and all the other various fixes that are available on forums eg

The fix above unfortunately doesn't work for every phone and there are at least 5 other well documented fixes for the issue.

As an aside, when I first got my SGS2, when I plugged it in to my laptop there was no connection. I turned off the laptop power management of the USB ports (via device manager) and it's been fine on all ports ever since with a consistent 96mA draw. Oh and make sure the phone is 'awake' (i.e. on any of the desktop screens) when it's first plugged in.

Yeah, I've tried them all.. Nothing seems to be helping, the only thing that got me hoping was that driver that made my phone visible in explorer, but that's not really what I was aiming for.. =/

Does this suggested workaround also solve the same problem on samsung galaxy sII?

Hi Imran,

I couldn't tell you. My SGS2 plugged straight in no problems to every USB port on my computer. I assumed the problem had been largely sorted. It can't hurt to give out a go.

Hi Fern,

I don't have any experience with your specific problem but there are a few things you could try. Just a guess and could be wrong, but I take it the browser is Internet Explorer (IE)? If so, try a second browser, Firefox, Chrome and Opera are the three main other browsers. If the problem persists, try running a browser in add-on restricted/off mode, you may have to search for a 'how to' on this. Thinking here is that some add-ons to browsers are unstable with certain scenarios and this could be one of them.

let us know how you get on!
