How to Remove Black Toolbar Internet Explorer 8 and Other Computer Tips

Attempts to Remove Toolbar; Success at Last

I have had trouble with the black lines on the toolbar ever since I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 on my Windows XP computer.. It was against my better judgment to perform this task as friends told me their employers refused to download this program. I finally got sick of the little update icon bothering me, so I downloaded it. Then, frustration set in as I tried all sorts of ways to remove the toolbar..

My husband uninstalled the browser and downloaded it again, and back came the blackness. Then I went to the Internet and tried some suggested methods to remove toolbar. My computer background had an amazing photograph of a lighthouse on a lake that everyone loved. However, I tried one suggestion to remove that background and return to the Windows classic. That did not work, and my photograph disappeared, never to return. Then I found a Microsoft fix that didn’t fix anything. I hesitated reverting back to another browser, as my toolbar was just right for me with McAfee Site Advisor and the Google Toolbar, and I was afraid of losing them and being further in a hole..

Months went by, and every day I started my computer and later restarted it again to remove the toolbar for that day only. When the blackness was there, the toolbar did not have the required buttons for correct operation. I felt like I was slowly climbing the walls of a deep black hole with frustration, but with determination to reach the top.

Finally, I found a suggestion that worked, and II reached the top of that horrible black hole and the frustration that made me crazy, . I went to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Themes, and changed themes to manual settings..My problem is gone forever, and my sanity has returned, but not my precious photograph. That's ok as long as my black hole from Microsoft has disappeared from my life.I have heard that there are other problems with the browser. but I have hot encountered anything else. I hope that this procedure will help others who still have this problem.

As of December 2014, approximately 6% of Internet users in the world still use IE 6/7/8. The highest browser usage is Chrome with 46%.Total IE users is 22%.

Ode to Microsoft

Oh Microsoft oh Microsoft

We used to trust you so.

But now we're in a big black hole

Wherever did you go?

Tips

Do not give Facebook or any other site your password for email, as this may violate privacy

When a fake virus scan begins a computer scan, get out of it or close computer down.

If your toolbar accepts favorites, put your often-used sites there for easy access.

Regularly delete temporary internet files as they slow down the computer.

Run scandisk and defrag on a regular basis.

If you have a virus, you cannot get rid of or something messing up your computer, try system restore to put it back to a prior date before the offender showed up.

Be sure to have virus scan, firewall, and spyware on your computer. Do not use two virus protectors.

Shut down your computer at night and during electrical storms. This is one of the computer tips that may save you money.

Don’t use the same password for all your programs

Clean out your email inbox on a regular basis.

If you are an affiliate, use allintitle: and then your keywords, to determine how many website titles are using your keyword. This is for websites that are competing for good keywords to get traffic.

Do not put your bank in favorites for easy access. It may bring up an old page, and banks discourage it.

Do not give your email password to any site, as it may give them access to use the names and email addresses for unscrupulous activity.

Use a site advisor in order to stay away from bad pages.

If you need photos for your websites, morguefile.com has many that they allow for commercial use. Read the license of the photo before using it.

Some people recommend not using Internet Explorer due to security issues. Firefox is an alternate browser that is more popular than Internet Explorer.(Click on Firefox above for more information).

Take a picture of the back of the computer to show the hookup. If you have to take it apart and then redo it, the photograph will assist in this process. These computer tips are great.

Download software carefully, closing programs prior to this task. Watch carefully for keys to be inserted registering the software. Computers have crashed on a reinstall due to failure to enter the registration key.

If you can not remove a program thru the Windows Add/Remove Programs, and luckily you are an advanced user, to manually uninstall it is also another way available but not recommended.

Thanks for the tip on removing the ugly black bar from IE8. All the other things I'd tried from other forums worked until I re-booted my computer, then the black was back. I did it the way you described and after about 15 re-boots, no black bar. Thank you very much indeed!!

Hi Mr. Ed I am glad it worked for you. I'm surprised you had to keep rebooting, but at least it is fixed. As you can see, it took me forever until I found the magic formula. Thanks for reading my hub.

Hi registerdomains - Thanks for reading my hub. I hope it works for you. I love Firefox, but have difficulty with the add ons. Now I am back to IE 8, but I never did like it. I also had Safari for awhile. I need to get in a group discussion about browsers and pros and cons. Anyway, thanks again, and I will look for your hubs.

Thank you so much for your fix on the black toolbars worked great.... you are right, what happened to Microsoft that they can't even post this solution since they aren't about to fix the cause. You should post it on their community knowledge base sites and show them up. Sure glad I came across your tip.

It doesn't work on my computer. I did as you said:

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, changed themes to manual.

I even restarted computer to make sure everything was cleared … and nothing happened, the bar is still there in both, ei8 and firefox. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Yes, several people said they had to do several restarts before it worked. Keep trying and don't give up. Many commented that I did work for them. I don't have XP anymore, but I'll post here if I get any other info. You might try redoing the fix also. Thanks for reading article

I never really had issues with IE 8 or Windows XP (or any other Windows/IE teamup)...but have you tried Windows 8/IE 10?

Ugh.

The day I got my new laptop, I literally had to google, "how to shut down Windows 8". No lie.

And I've been using Windows/PCs for 20 years! Lame. Me no likey the new Windows.

Voted up

brakel2 profile image

brakel2 3 years ago from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Author

Hi CarNoobz - Thank you for reading my hub and giving nice comments. I am afraid to try new updates, as I always seem to have trouble. I am not very fond of Microsoft and their products. By now, I hope your problems have ceased with Windows 8 and IE10. I still have Internet Explorer 8 but barely use it. I always like to look at profiles, so I will find yours and maybe read some hubs. Like you, I always have to google even the simplest things, so I understand why you had to google a shut down issue. We need manuals and ones that are sensible. Take care.

I changed my theme from Windows Classic to Windows XP, and though I like it less, my toolbar is now bright and clear. I was also able to grey down my windows backgrounds, as I do to reduce glare from white pages.

brakel2 profile image

brakel2 3 years ago from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Author

Hi sore shoulder - Sounds like a good plan as long as it fixed the toolbar. I guess I did not know there was a Windows Classic. At least it reduces your glare, and that's important. I worry about ruining my eyes with my computer and iPhone. It would be good to get away from glare for a while. Thanks for visiting our site, and stop by again. I hope you enjoy reading articles, at least about technology. Take care.

If you have Firefox, you might have pressed something that made it go full screen and hide everything. Try pressing F11 to see if it will restore your toolbar and start menu. It happened to me one time.

So I took the original advice and tried something a bit different. In the next tab over under Themes, you will find the "Log On" tab. Under it, the box "Allow service to interact with desktop" was unchecked. So I checked it. Stopped and restarted the Themes service and it immediately cured the issue. So, turning it OFF (setting it to manual and stopping service or restarting computer) works, but also allowing it to "interact" with desktop (meaning, everything else that can benefit from Themes) works as well. Thank you for pointing us in the right direction!

Hi Lefty - Thanks for reading my hub and telling me of an alternate solution. You must be a tech person of the highest degree. I am impressed. I wish I still had Windows XP. I loved it, and understood it and almost cried when I got Windows 7. I still have IE8 but don't use it very often. It has some errors in security settings and won't go to certain websites. Anyway thanks for the kind comments and for visiting our site. Come back and visit us again. Take care.
