How to Fix Shockwave Flash Crashes in Google Chrome

The Shockwave Flash Crash that we experience while browsing sites with flash content(such as Youtube) is quite common. But recently it has increased quite a bit, up to the point that browsing has become really annoying, and using sites like Youtube is a real pain in the butt.

This is very annoying, since the crash is browser wide and we have to refresh every single page that had flash content in order for the Shockwave Flash Player to reload. You lose all your progress, if any, and also all the buffered content while watching videos.

Unlike other browsers, Google Chrome is particularly more susceptible to these kind of crashes. Read further to find out more and how to fix it in Google Chrome.

What Causes It?

Google Chrome unlike other browsers has an internal Flash Plugin of its own. By default, it does not use the Flash Plugin that you install in your Operating System(Windows/Mac).

For some reason, Chrome sometimes gets confused which plugin to choose, the OS one(Windows/Mac) or the one which it has internally, so instead it chooses both. This causes lag in the browser, or in the worst case, causes the whole plugin to crash.

So how do we fix this issue? The answer is simple, disable the plugin that is provided in Chrome internally.

Steps to Fix the Sockwave Flash Crash

Following are the steps to fix the Shockwave Flash Crash in Google Chrome.

1. Open Chrome's Plugins page

Open Chrome and type "about:plugins" in the address bar and hit enter. This will open the plugins page of the browser.

2. Click Details

Click "Details" on the top right corner of the page in order to see the whole content.

3. Locate the Shockwave Flash Plugin

Locate the Shockwave Flash Plugin on the page, which is usually the first one. It should indicate "2 files" next to the name, if not this tutorial is not for you, probably you have some other problem with your Flash Plugin.

4. Disable the File installed in Chrome

If there are 2 files, carefully check the value of the Location field of both the files and find the file that has been installed internally in Chrome. Once you have found it, simply click on the Disable link provided below the location value to disable it.

5. Restart Chrome

If you have done all the above steps restart Chrome for the changes to take effect. If everything is done right, Shockwave Flash will not crash like it used to before.

Some of you may still not understand the above steps or may have some problems doing it, or simply are too lazy to read it all.

You can watch this video demo I created earlier, which shows all the above steps.

Did all of the above steps and it still crashes constantly. I removed and reinstalled all programs to get the latest of each but to no avail. If I want to avoid, it appears that I have to avoid Chrome.

I'm sorry ummME but then there's some other problem with your Flash Player/Chrome. This tutorial won't help you fix it.

Mine isn't showing that there are two flash files conflicting. There is only one. I disabled it just to try, and it disabled flash. Still can't figure out what's wrong. Every website tells me the same thing. Having two conflicting ones is not my problem. So annoyed :/

Same problem- don't have 2 files and still crashing. And can't find any solution for this.

This wasn't helpful to me at all as I do not have the (2 files) part, yet this same advice seems to be the only advice on the internet, I am still getting crashes every few seconds and its driving me up the wall!

Help anyone?!

If the above doesn't work, try this. I got a fix that finally fixed my problem - Use this at your own risk. Go to Chrome://plugins and disable the pepper-flash file but not the wow64 Flash. Go to adobe flash site and download the windows adobe flash player for chrome (Win2k, XP. Vista 7) to desktop. Right click it and set compatibility to XP sp3 and install. My flash has been working ever since with no problems. With the pepper-flash disabled, even updates won't turn it back on and chome is forced to use the 32 bit version of Adobe Flash for Chrome. According to a friend at Google. Confusion is not the problem ... It's the pepper-flash! Google is working at replacing it.

Macklin Crewe, I can't find anything about what your are saying, or trying to say, I get the 'Awe Snap' message almost none stop now.

I can't do anything without it messing up, which isn't good for a computer you do your work on!

google adobe flash player, they will say you have the latest flash. Nonetheless, download the link below it and install the flash again. After doing so, you will see (2 files) when you key in about:plugins

thanx but when i playing poker games he did not work...why?

Kiki1975 3 years ago

I have both plugins. I disabled Chromes internal flash player, and it still crashes. I can watch youtube vids, but if I go to a page with multiple video ads, my computer has a hernia, freaks out, then says flash has crashed. I updated to the latest chrome and flash to no avail. Is there any other reason my plugins hate me? (Flash, Constant Guard, and Identity Safe all have fun with me at the cost of my sanity)

I think the best thing would be to delete the app files which contain Chrome configurations. Corrupt app files are usually responsible for frequent crashes. Delete the app files from the following directory:

C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

Thank you for the solution! I, too, did not have two versions, so I just went to Adobe and got the latest version (of both Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave). Now having two, I got rid of the one you indicate and--presto! Thanks again, the relentless crashing was driving me crazy!
