How to gain access to your computer when you no longer remember the password

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to sign on to an old computer and you don't know your password anymore. Perhaps you have an old file you need, or you wish to transfer some documents to a new computer. Either way it is frustrating when you don't have access anymore. If your old system was operating with Windows XP don't worry, the solution is simple. Here are the steps to accessing your computer. This worked for a Compaq Presario 7500. Good luck!

  1. Locate your F8 key and turn on your computer.

  2. Once the computer is on, keep pressing the F8 key repeatedly until a menu screen pulls up.

  3. Stop hitting the F8 key at this point and select the “safe” mode of your computer.

  4. Once your computer is in “safe” mode and your computer again loads you will see an option of “administrator.” Select “administrator.”

  5. Go to your control panel and select user accounts and find your old sign on name that you no longer remember your password for.

  6. Click on “remove” password and restart your computer. You should now be able to sign on without needing a password.

Tip: If you still wish to have the old computer password protected, consider a new password and keep it in a safe place for future reference.

Tip: Print these instructions and save them.
