Improve internet speed

In this article I will share methods of optimizing your Internet speed. If you are expecting 2mbps speeds from a 256kbps connection, please look elsewhere as It will not happen with the methods I will talk about here. The methods discussed here will work differently for all, so not all will get same results. So here are a few ways of improving internet speed of your broadband connection:

Open DNS

Google DNS
Google DNS

Use Open DNS or Google DNS

It is better to use open DNS or google DNS instead of automatic DNS as the ISP servers are not that reliable. Here is how you can change your DNS settings:
Windows 7/Vista go to Control Panel>>Network and Sharing Center>>Change Adapter Settings>>Local Area Connection>>Properties>>Internet Protocol Version 4>>Properties>> put dot in "Use the Following DNS Servers".Then use the Following DNS Servers:

Open DNS:

Preferred DNS Server:
Alternate DNS Server:

Google DNS:

Preferred DNS Server:
Alternate DNS Server:

Download managers

Using download managers can sometimes help. It is used for direct downloads and can be helpful when the server from where we are downloading is under heavy load, download managers use various sources hence that improves the overall download speed. These download managers are both Free and paid. Here are the Free ones:


Its always good to have a clean, virus free system. Who knows, a stupid virus could be eating up a lot of your bandwidth. Here are a few Free Anti virus software that you could use incase you already don't have one:

Signal Quality

A lot depends on the Line (signal) quality. The main parameters are SNR and Attenuation. SNR - Signal to noise ratio, should be as large as possible and attenuation should be as small as possible. Please visit the following article for more in depth information:
