What is Linkedin ?

  • It's the worlds largest professional network, it has a total of 175+ million members & growing at an alarming rate of 2 new members per second, whom are all interacting in differing ways both socially and professionally.
  • Linkedin receives close to 4.2 Billion professional web searches from its members on its professional platform for networking purposes in the year 2011, and approaching 5.3 Billion searches this year of 2012. Making them a mega popular network all forms of online business.
  • Web developers from all over the world are using Linkedin's Developer Api's over 75,000 of them, and all to create some pretty innovative online technology apps for business that's directly built into Linkedin.

Professional Networking Giants Taking Dominion

Linkedin is a professional network where people can choose to connect with their colleagues, co-workers, business partners, company reps, and the list goes on and on. One thing however is, you will need to purchase a premium account there to expand your networking coverage outside of your range of communicating with the minimum allotted amount of connections there.

Making Connections -

You get to utilize and create your own Linkedin groups, join other official groups, social feeds, sharing buttons (For website publishers, blog owners, website owners), and also a pretty cool profile link to share outside of Linkedin, and if you're actually an employer yourself, you can literally connect with potential prospects on their user profile; for scouting purposes, reviewing resumes, and all recruiting purposes. The network there definitely opens up web space for business to business deals as well, and in a pretty unique way of utilizing online networking, and for the average user it's a great connection point of making professional contacts worldwide.

Official company reps and corporations also use Linkedin, they scan people's resumes and even from their company website, using a cool 'Apply with Linkedin' submit button, which is actually an embed code from the Linkedin developersnetwork website location. This makes it essentially easier to transfer your resume if you chose to upload one onto your profile there, and easier for companies to transfer prospective potential employees with the click of a button.

Linkedin is a massive organization today

Today based on the Linkedin website's about section this company literally started in a persons living-room (By Linkedin co-founder Reid Hoffman in 2002), which is quite ironic because my social network business also did as well, and I'm still going at it till this day. They seemed to attract much of the globes professionals who enjoy online communications today, and mainly for the fact that there's loads of people networking there.

They have loads of employees today in their company who all help to manage it all both on the ground and online, and the numbers top about 2800+. This online super power has also been translated into 18 different languages including English. Making Linkedin interchangeable with over 200 differing countries, and allowing it to become a multinational Corporation of sorts, which helps the owners, and CEO (Jeff Weiner) grow their company to much newer heights.

This is absolutely the best write-up I have ever read about LinkedIn, covering what LinkedIn is and how it can benefit professionals. I enjoyed reading it and you have convinced me that I should probably go back and explore more of the options LinkedIn provides. Excellent hub... excellent coverage of this topic.

@billybuc thanks bro, I figured I'd try to score on the best answer of some hubber who may have been pondering on getting a direct answer as to what linkedin was all about.

I did my very best from what ever info I could locate from the Linkedin about page, and that of Wikipedia, then threw it all into my very own version of a hub, I hope it sufficed as a good enough answer to win me the favor of the Questions author. We will see in due time, for sure Bill, I'm after that new accolade Hah!

You've got me thinking. I'm not a member over there, but do individuals benefit, too? I mean, does being on there help freelance writers/photographers/artists get jobs and referrals? I have no idea how it works, but I'd be interested in a possible hub about the benefits of joining. :)

Wonderfully well explained. You are a past master at letting us know of new technologies, websites and the like and make a hub about it detailing how best to draw the most benefit from them.

Thanks for sharing this, bro.

Voted all ends up and shared.

@cclitgirl, Linkedin will only do what you choose to do there, its a powerful communications tool mainly because it connects us automatically with colleagues we've known all of our adult live, and if they've joined it already, and so say you forgot many of your ex-coworkers names for instance, haven't located them on facebook yet, well by placing your info into Linkedin, their archival system will produce for you the connections once you submit the places you've worked at in your working career.

It does much more though, and I will try to come up with another hub soon, but it may take some time to craft because I have a great deal others I'm working on as well.

I hope this info helps a bit for you to get an idea of the basic benefits, but the true benefit for me is the Linkedin news feed, and FB sync which allows you to automatically stream many of your posts directly into the news feed there. This helps us as content curators to spread our networking potential, and without even being logged into Linkedin.

Thanks for the inquiry, I will do my best to make the next hub on Linkedin presented well enough to place all this and more into full perspective for everyone looking to learn much more.

@dwachira, thanks bro yeah I use it mainly for streaming my feeds into it, as a cool way to network my digital works, and so everything I share onto Facebook hit Linkedin as well, and also that of twitter.

@rajan jolly, thanks bro for your support here, I like Linkedin, even though I never paid for the premium account there which I'm sure will open up my networking potential even more, I just cannot afford it at the moment, but until such a time I shall some day.

You are right. Since I discovered linkedin my business network has expanded immensely. That's why I prefer it to facebook which is full of too many distractions and is not business oriented like Linkedin.

Thank you @meowchie for commenting and for reading, glad to see that you made it to my hub here & yw.

Yeah Linkedin has surely upgraded their platform recently and I was even able to add many more people to network with there.

@johnginzburg, I like to mix things up all of the time in terms of multiple networking communications, so I share on all of my networks pretty much equally and simultaneously from a simple FB post using IFTTT, you should give it a try.

Social feeds are truly powerful indeed, and definitely when you do it wisely today, I guess I'll right another hub about that cool network soon.

Thanks for the cool comment and for giving my hub here a chance.
