If you’ve started playing Farmville on Facebook, you’ve probably figured out that a major key to success is having lots of neighbors. But how do you get neighbors if not many of your Facebook friends are playing? There are many ways to get new neighbors . Most are effective. But if you want to be a politically correct player, follow the Miss Manners guide.

Miss Manners Method #1: Watch your News Feed. When you see a Farmville offering from one of your neighbors, watch the names that comment or click Like. By the way, it is also politically correct to click Like or comment with a variation of thank you (ty will do) when you have clicked on and received an offering such as a foal, egg, seedling or whatever. When you see a name that is not on your friend list, it is acceptable to send a friend request to that person. But make sure when you do, that you find the Add Personal Message link and type something like “For Farmville neighbors” so that person will understand why you are sending a Friend Request.

Miss Manners Method #2: Visit the official Zynga Farmville Forum for adding neighbors. You will need to register before you can post here. Look for the Register link on the upper left side. You may just want to click the links others have posted instead of posting your own. I recently read one person’s post that said she got 150 friend requests in less than an hour after posting so this may be overwhelming.

Miss Manners Method #3: Do a search within Facebook for Farmville Neighbors to find current groups that have formed for this purpose. Be sure to read the group information carefully before posting any sort of Add Me link to make sure that such a post is appropriate. One active group is simply called Farmville Neighbors. Go to the Discussions tab to find neighbor posts.

Miss Manners Method #4: You can post a link to your Facebook profile in the comment section below, saying that you agree to add other Facebook users as friends in order to make them FarmVille neighbors.

What NOT to do!

Unless you want to be considered a very poor player, do not post random “Add Me” messages in various Farmville groups on Facebook or Farmville forums that are not specifically for adding neighbors. Anyone who has seen these knows how obnoxious they are, particularly when you visit a group or web site to gain real Farmville information. They do nothing but clutter up the site and hide the real information people are looking for.

Caution! Remember, when you are seeking neighbors amongst people you do not know on Facebook, you are allowing strangers to see the other information that you share on Facebook with your Facebook Friends. This is the reason I prefer Method #1 for obtaining new neighbors. While it is certainly no guarantee, at least these are people who have already been playing with other people you know.

A growing number of serious players prevent this issue by opening a new Facebook account under a dummy name (i.e. Farmer John) for the sole purpose of playing Farmville.   With a dummy account, you can add as many strangers as you want as neighbors without fear of anyone learning your real identity.
