New Airtel broadband plans
Airtel had recently upgraded all their existing customers to double the speed, which was a welcome surprise. The have now reduced some tariffs too. But the things we loose out are on FUP. On the older plans, there was no download cap on unlimited plans, but on the new ones, there is,ill be talking about that in a little more detail later.
The new plans from airtel start off at 512kbps. Their basic plan is called the surf 599. With this plan, you get a speed of 512kbps and a data transfer limit of 3GB. This plan is good for those who just use internet for checking their mails, some social networking, basically basic users. The charge is Rs599/month, no free calls available.
The next plan is similar, its called the surf699. With this plan , for Rs 699, you get 1mbps internet, 4GB download limit and Rs100 worth free calls, so basicaly its a no brainer, its a better plan than the surf599 as for the same amount of money, you get a higher speed and more data limit.
Then its the 2mbps plan called the Impatience 799. For Rs 799, you get 2mbps internet speed, 5GB transfer limit and free calls worth Rs100. This is also a good plan. 5GB is fine even you you watch videos on youtube, but is not sufficient if you do a lot of online gaming.
Then comes the browser 899 plan. For Rs899 you get 512kbps download speed and "unlimited" download limit. You also get calls worth Rs100 and some other goodies, which are useless in my book. This plan is not truly unlimited. It actually has an FUP of just 10GB, after which your speed will reduce to just 256kbps. I fell a 10GB FUP is too less, it should have been at least 20GB.
The Swift 1099 plan is what I currently use. For Rs 1099, I get 1mbps download speed and "unlimited" download limit. Here again, the plan is not truly unlimited. The FUP is 25GB, which should be sufficient for most users actually. When we cross the FUP, the speed is downgraded to 512kbps.
The Impatience 1299 plan is becoming very common now, for Rs 1299, you get 2mbps download speed and "unlimited" download limit. Here also you have an FUP of 25GB, after which the speed is downgraded to 512kbps.
I have been an Airtel broadband user for almost 2.5 years now and I have had a pretty good experience. I get consistent speeds, very little down time ( even if there is, I am informed via sms) and good service.
My system is on almost 24x7, I generally download a lot of movies and games and I am a gaming addict, so I play a lot online. I am pretty sure that my usage goes well beyond 25GB, but my speed has never been cut, I don't know why, but it seems to happen to other too, so FUP has never been an issue for me.
