Updating my Nokia E7 to Belle

Updating From Anna To Belle

So I woke up Tuesday morning and the Twittersphere was full of the announcement of the release of 'Nokia Belle' for older Symbian^3 devices like the C7, N8 and E7, been looking forward to this having briefly tried a hacked version of Belle on my E7, so I cranked up Nokia Suite on my PC and connected my E7, let the whole thing connect up, and then checked for software updates. Unfortunately I got an error message, including a link for the latest version of Nokia Suite,3.3.86, so I upgraded and installed it, assuming the Nokia servers were extremely busy due to demand after the announcement and newer PC software may help the situation, but unfortunately, was told my phone was running the latest software, Anna and so the wait for my phone to hit the top of the list began !! Having an unbranded handset direct from Nokia , I was hoping this would not take too long, but five hours later, still no Belle to be heard ?

Phone updating

Passing time and waiting

Anyway, during the wait, apart from doing a few domestic chores on my day off, I thought I'd take a few screen shots on my E7 running Anna so I had some comparison once the latest and greatest Symbian update arrived, and thought I'd write a little piece about my experience .

So finally at 6pm, the software showed up on my PC, checked for updates and there she was and it was time to ring the Belle, quite a large update 310meg and all the usual warnings about backup and agreeing terms and conditions gone through, away I went. The operation took about 25 minutes in all and then came the set up. I was keen to have the extra 'homescreens' as I'd enjoyed multiple screens when using Android, and as there were some larger widgets on Belle I found I needed more screens to get all the stuff I generally use on my phone easily available, also I like tinkering, and tinkering after a major update is the best type !!!

I'm not going to go through changelogs etc, as they will no doubt have been covered in detail, and professionally on the web at many tech sites,

here for example at All About Symbian

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/14188_The_Nokia_Belle_update_roll_ou.php

and here at MyNokiaBlog

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/02/08/feedback-how-are-you-finding-the-official-nokia-belle-update/

But thought I'd just post a few screenshots (assuming screen snap is still compatible with Belle) and photo's of the procedeure and differences in the phone !

So far the whole thing seems to be a great experience, and has given the E7 and Symbian a whole new lease of life , and most importantly Gravity and Maps both work like a dream, job done !!

Comparison screen shots Anna v Belle

Post script

PS, after using the phone for a day, and a couple of issues that arose, top tip, if you use Mail for Exchange to sync your contacts and calendar, don't back them up prior to update, or at least don't reinstall afterwards, as I had a major issue with duplicate contacts and having to reorganise three handsets as a result. Also of the three additional, optional updates Microsoft apps refused to install before my fifteenth attempt today (Wednesday) and the others would only install after rebooting both my PC and my E7, the only other issue I had, a minor one in my case, was that the latest version of the Nokia Social app v1.5 for Belle, simply will not install from the Nokia store despite numerous attempts, as I rarely if ever use it, I find this slightly irritating as apposed to disasterous !!

Update and set up shots

So after a day with Belle, and setting up the phone , I'm really impressed, very customisable and few drawbacks. All the apps I was struggling to install are now on and working , got the social app installed by downloading from store website and installing on E7 via Nokia Suite connected via usb, few apps have failed to work,. Main drawback the media gallery tends to be slow to refresh. The fact you can put shortcuts anywhere is great and I like the new larger widgets which tend to be more functional, you can actually scroll through your mail on the emails widgets, for example !! Just thought I'd add some more screen shots of my 6 homescreens now I'm all set up, and give a short user experience !!

Cheers

Just a very quick Video recorded on my Lumia 800 to demonstrate the ability to swipe between mail accounts by swiping from left to right within the mail application on the Nokia E7 running Belle. Fantastic improvement and well worth using.

Very concise view, Stephen!

Whilst I like a lot of what Belle brings to my N8 I do have to say that things have moved on for me now and Symbian itself (or Nokia belle to give it its correct name) feels something of an anachronism now since getting my Lumia 800.

What I find most interesting is the way WP7 and Belle are converging in many areas: the flatter menu structure without folders (that can even be arranged alphabetically now), the simple, clear iconography and use of text styles and the way some of the more intricate settings have been removed.

Belle certainly feels far snappier than Anna (and that's still on a 2-year-old processor) and is a lot more presentable and up-to-date, but there are some glaring gaffs in the overall design:

The calendar widget it at odds with the general style of Belle (looks like it would be more at home on iOS with the awful bookshelves and note-pad backgrounds) and the Media Player, Mail and digital Clock widgets waste space and again look miss-matched in my opinion.

That said, Belle allows far more customisation of the homescreens to stay competitive with Android and brings some much-needed vigor and youth to Nokia's existing smartphones.

I'd really like to see Belle on a device with a +1GHz processor and a hi-res screen: that could really make a difference and show what belle could offer; the N8's hardware is effectively two years old now...

I also look forward to some new widgets from the remaining Symbian Devs to replace the lashed-up offerings from Nokia!

Thanks for reading and replying to the post Steve , it's appreciated, I'm in the same situation as you , but although Windows Phone is faster than Symbian and the browser is certainly much better in every way, I still like my E7 and still find it more than useable, especially with the new software. I also like the amount of customization it offers, plus the ability to side load apps and media (without hacking) really think it will go out with a bang and I'm very happy overall with the update. As for the future, I'm optimistic about WP and will be even more so if it gets more 'nokification' with coming updates and maybe a little more freedom;)

Nice, just wondering where did you try installing microsoft apps from? i haven't gotten any updates (on the phone or on nokia suite) both before and after Belle.

Hi, it was offered on Nokia suite, directly after the Belle update was completed ! Will post a screen shot later, all I can suggest is refresh updates on Nokia suite and make sure you have the latest version !

Stephen , after installing microsoft apps, are you able to create multiple Exchange accounts?

carman58 profile image

carman58 4 years ago from Leeds, Uk Author

Just tried and said maximum reached, only have two accounts set up, so maybe two, but didn't want to delete one to try, the MSFT exchange app allowed me to enter settings before asking me to delete an account, so assume two active accounts is maximum ?

Nice comparison post, Stephen. All those Belle posts excites and makes me think of my E7. I am almost consdering to buy one now. Where are the shortcut widgets?, I don't see them on your screen shots. I like the email widget it Belle. Good read :-)

hi Kriz, took a lot of editing in paint , which I'm not very good at :) kinda ran out of time, would have taken forever to compare everything ! You can basically put a shortcut for anything anywhere you want , there are screenshots of the widget menu in the post, will maybe add shots of my homescreens now I've just about got the E7 set up as I want, overall very impressed with the Belle update . Thanks for reading and commentng mate ;)

All I can suggest is to keep checking Nokia Suite, or try Nokia Software Updater , that finds things when Nokia Suite doesn't sometimes!

Sorry , don't fully understand the question , you have Anna version of what ?

Rayt 4 years ago

I'm having a nightmare post "Belle" Upgrade. Prior to upgrade battery lasted appx 30 hrs, now lucky if it lasts more than 3 hrs, even with power saving. I'm not doing anything differently, signal strength the same etc.

Any ideas?

to be fair , my battery life is better on Belle ! Did you reset the N8 before you updated ? You can get conflict between settings from one software to another, bit of a pain , but you might find a reset and reinstalling Belle may sort it , just don't do full backup only basics, then set up phone manually !

Good luck

I do like Belle, but have not moderated the comment as I also like free choice, just be careful if hacking your phone, a bricked phone is much much worse than one working on Belle :)

You cannot 'downgrade' the SW on your phone, but you should be able to go to a Nokia Care point and ask them to reflash Anna onto it,or check somewhere like Daily Mobile forum for help ! Personally I love Belle so it's not something I've looked into. Good luck
