Looking at OtterBoxes for iPhone Impact Protection

Two new iphones for people who aren’t known for their carefulness with tech devices required some research. It came down to one question--would it be the LifeProof LifeJacket or the OtterBox Defender protective iPhone case that would suit our needs?

Case Options for iPhones

As I was making my prototype Dark Chocolate iPhone Case a report about two guys whose small plane dropped them into Gulf waters grabbed my attention. To see the pilot using his protected iPad in the water as he waited on rescuers was fascinating.

“How is that possible?” morphed into “How cool is that?” so quickly I barely noticed the switch. Turns out that the men were treading water for about an hour or so when the pilot remembered he had his iPad in its LifeProof LifeJacket. (See videos below.)

Using his iPad to record the event for history gave us a look at the importance of using a good case for our devices. There he was, having a ball with his friend (my version). There is no reason to be bored anywhere at anytime anymore!

This introduction to the fantastic LifeProof products was a huge help to my search for the best iPhone case for our new devices. After wading through the info, it came down to the LifeProof brand or the OtterBox brand for us.

What iPhone Case is Best for Average Me?

With all of the technology now available in clothing, gear, and devices, many people are venturing into adventure with gusto. What wasn’t possible (aka smart) in the past is now not only possible, but also smart--even grandmothers are going out on a limb.

Alaskan glaciers in winter's wind, exotic vacations that demand survival training, extended hiking trips in Europe and Africa--it’s all sounding pretty standard these days. I, however, am old school average. Those are not the kind of activities I am likely to be involved in with the time I have left to me.

If I ever get into another small plane and it starts going down I might turn my phone on, but the next thing will be a heart attack and I will be unable to actually use the phone at the time no matter the outcome.

Comparing the LifeProof with the Otterbox took a little time, but it was worth it. Average me will do very well without a LifeJacket unless grandchildren talk me into something that is at this point unforeseen.

Review the OtterBox Defender for iPhones

5 out of 5 stars from 2 ratings of OtterBox Cases

My Favorite OtterBox Features

The iphones are great, and our phone carrier made my husband a super deal, but they are slippery as glass, pun intended! A small hard shell for the back and sides' protection was a good first move. It helped me hold on to the thing in my initial stages of learning to use it.

On several occasions, though, I wondered not if but when I was going to drop it. Though iPhones are lightweight, they are heavy enough that a firm grip is important. Without a case/cover I could not get to the point of feeling like I really had control of it in my hand.

Though some reviews called both cases we were looking at bulky, I needed a useable case that would give me a firm grip. Other reviews indicated that the LifeJacket’s protection made the phones a little difficult to use.

I could understand that since the nature of their design required perfectly sealed coverage. Of course it would be harder to use, but that wouldn’t matter if you needed to use it in extreme circumstances. Simply put, you would be glad it was so well protected if it saved your life.

More reading helped us make an educated decision to go with OtterBoxes. Even though ours are not the waterproof style, by comparison they are going to do a super job of meeting our uncomplicated needs.

The first thing I noticed was that holding my iPhone was a great experience once it was inside its new case. I was able to grip it better for using the camera and other features, and I was also more relaxed about my good possibility of dropping it.

To my surprise, I found that the volume buttons were easier to find and use when I was not looking at them. The OtterBox is definitely designed to be user friendly!

In one review we read that the flaps for opening the power port and the other features were difficult to operate, but that is not the case for my husband or myself with our cases. Accessing this cover's ports is no problem.

I haven’t dropped mine yet, but my record tells me it won’t be long. If my husband drops his it will be from a moving vehicle, a tall building’s roof top, a bridge, or something of that sort. We’re ready, though--OtterBox has us covered.

I absolutely LOVE my iPhone Otter Box case. I've dropped my phone more times than I can count, yet there's not even a scratch left behind!! Sure, it might be a little bulky, but I'd rather have "bulky" than "broken"!! All in all, I'd say that Otter Box products are pretty solid (I have a large storage-type Otter Box that I use to keep my phone & keys safe on fishing trips.) Awesome review!

Thanks much for this confirming comment! I don't find that the OtterBox has made my phone too bulky at all, but your "rather have bulky than broken" is priceless. :)

I can see the benefit of the OtterBox extreme/water storage product in some cases, but for the average person I find the Defender more than adequate for everyday use.

So appreciate your feedback here!

I have not heard of this box and I see most of the readers here haven't either (took the poll). This would be a great investment and worth the money to protect your iphone. We have a pretty durable case as it is, but may have to consider this updated version. I enjoyed reading about the pilot in the water. It seems you can play games anywhere!

Glad to know that this info on OtterBox was helpful to you. Thanks for letting me know!

That pilot's story is amazing--don't know if you saw the two videos about him below the poll. If not, you might like to check them out. How he uses his plane will have you hoping he gets another plane soon!

"I haven’t dropped mine yet, but my record tells me it won’t be long. " - you're record sounds like mine!

I love my otter box. And am thankful for it every time my 2 year old puts my phone in his mouth or my 4 year old accidentally drops it down the stairs. I stubbornly refuse to get one of those belt hooks to hold it though, so mine has become pretty stretched out from pulling it in and out of my pocket. I'm sure you'll take better care of yours :)

ExpectGreatThings:

It's hard to believe that I have not yet dropped this iPhone, but I credit the fact that the OtterBox lets me hold on to it better. If I had not put this case on it I'm certain it would be damaged by now. My habit tends to make things fly across a room, driveway, or parking lot!

A second reason I wanted the case is that I want my grandchildren to be able to play with the phone safely. There are apps for little ones, and who knows, they may teach me more about using it!

I don't put mine in a pocket so I can't speak from personal experience, but my husband does so I may have to report back, but so far so good.

I'm thinking of making one of my dark chocolate covers for the OtterBox just because they are fun. I'll have to make a new prototype, but it will be worth it. :)

I can attest to the fact that OtterBox cases definitely do what they're supposed to do! I have dropped my iPhone a number of times, and the OtterBox has protected it perfectly. I wish I could say that I would be more careful and never drop my iPhone again, but I am a bit of a klutz...

Mine has already paid for itself. Without the OtterBox I would be minus one iPhone now. I never intended to sling across a room that has a tile floor, but too many things in my hands and the klutz ballet began… :)

My OtterBox has saved my phone more than once! My friend's iphone just dropped and cracked the glass and I told her that she needs an OtterBox for the replacement. She agreed!

They are amazing covers, aren't they?! The ease of use combined with the protection make them invaluable to us. I hope your friend gets her OtterBox before she gets her iPhone replaced!
