Uniform Traffic Ticket (ID:8) SCAM:

New York State - Department of Motor Vehicles

This appears to be one of the newer (old) scams circulating the internet. It has an attachment so please don't open it. As far as I can tell it comes in as if you have commited some sort of traffic violation, in this case speeding. Since I hadn't been to New York in several years, I was pretty sure it had nothing to do with me or my vehicle. The "Ticket" looks something like this:

*************************************************************************************************************************

UNIFORM TRAFFIC TICKET (ID:8), POLICE AGENCY
NEW YORK STATE POLICE
Local Police Code 276 THE PERSON DESCRIBED ABOVE IS CHARGED AS FOLLOWS

Time: 7:25 AM
Date of Offense: 07/02/2011
IN VIOLATION OF NYS V AND T LAW

3 Description of Violation
SPEED OVER 55 ZONE
TO PLEAD, PRINT OUT THE ENCLOSED TICKET AND SEND IT TO TOWN COURT, CHATAM HALL., PO BOX 117

**************************************************************************************************************************

After a little research, you can find a Town Court with a Chatam Hall (Not Chatham Hall), and they have actually posted a notice that the scam has nothing to do with them. This isn't a new scam but apparently it has resurfaced and is making a new circuit on the internet merry go round. The most common issue is with a Trojan Horse virus embedded in the attachment, designed to pilfer your personal information from your computer.

These kind of things peeve me more than you can imagine, not to mention cluttering up my inbox. I know I am not the only one getting the garbage but sometimes it is difficult to tell where the legitimate flags are and what to watch out for. I posted a text message scam out here because I work for a credit union and I was getting a text from a credit union. We would never text you a message about your credit card. Just as you are not going to get a ticket in your email. The license branch doesn't have your email address attached to your licence number, your plate number, or any other identifying feature that might give them cause to email you - unless you signed up to pay your registration online and then they will only be emailing you in regards to your registration.

This is just another friendly warning being posted out there so others may beware.

Thanks for the warning. I wonder if scammers ever sleep? There is a lot of time involved in thinking up these ways of hurting people.

Thank you for confirming the information. I recently received this type of email. I was not in NYC on the date of the ticket, so I assumed it was an error or a scam. I tried to open the attachment but received a warning that it contained a virus.
